Jim, all depends on your definition of consumer camera.

Is Canon 5D Mark II, 2700$, 21Mpix, ISO6400 [pushed to ISO25600], 1080p/30fps, full-frame 36x24mm sensor with 6.4um pixels consumer camera for you? Is $3000 Nikon D700 consumer camera for you?

For me, it's not. Though not seen yet, I highly rate 5DMarkII as semi-professional DSLR tool [let's not talk about video mode here]. I'm pretty sure it will offer cleaner high-ISO images than current 5D. If you are going to compete with cameras like 5dM2 and D700 next year, I'll be very very glad because you are in my budget range of approx. $3000 without lens.

If you will target 1dsM3 and "the other stuff" costing $8000, I'm unfortunately out of the game.

The Switch To Digital

The Switch To Digital

I’ve heard a lot of negative vibes against the arms race for greater megapixels, but personally I support it. The greatest photographer I know, an australian surf photographer told me the reason he would never fully switch to digital was because you can turn a medium format picture into something that covers a whole wall, with very little loss. Maybe red has something that could do just that?
To reference your quote here Sojiah.

With the utmost respect to your surf photographer friend, to say that he will not change completely to digital because he believes he will not get equivalent resolution to that of film is a misnomer. For some years now Phase One have produced a series of medium format digital stills backs for medium format cameras (and now their own Mamiya built/based Phase One Body)

Their current high end 1:1 backs have chips rated at 39MP the P45+ and the newest model, the P65+ at 60.5MP. The P45+ will shoot an equivalent resolution, dynamic range and quality of 5x4 film, eclipsing medium format. The new P65+ will shoot a file that will rival a 8x10 negative! Now these cameras are not really 'in water' handheld cameras so they may not suit his photography in terms of handling and operability but there is no doubt that with the possible exception of 6x17 negatives (which can be easily replicated with a Pano head) these digital images have blown film away. I work for a professional camera and video supplier and we do not deal with a single professional photographer in this city who shoots any fashion, commercial or product work on a film camera.

My numbers may be slightly off here and please correct me if I am wrong but the Epic has an effective MP rating of around 21MP, which means that this camera will be able to shoot close to the equivalent image that a 1Ds Mark III can, at up to 100fps. The technology involved in this is amazing, and I think it will be only a matter of 10 years or so before we see the complete demise of 35mm motion picture film stock.

RED seem to be going down the path of developing a product that, for an excellent price, allow filmmakers to get images that rival and will eventually make film redundant, lets hope that as well as just selling their cameras RED get them as into as many DOP's hands as possible, especially those that believe they are inferior to film.

Why can't they target a better camera than the 1Ds mark III and release it for less than $3k?

Just look at what they are doing with the Scarlet...

I don't know if this is what they have in mind, but I wouldn't put it past them...

Pro vs. consumer

Pro vs. consumer

Jim, all depends on your definition of consumer camera. ...

From what I read, it seems that most pros would categorize the D700 and 5DmkII as backup bodies to their fully equiped "pro" gear. Personally, I would consider them "Pro", as I know some full-time working photographers who use comparable gear with great success. But I guess if you're a photojournalist who shoots non-stop in all kinds of environments all over the world, the definition of "pro gear" changes a bit.

I'm betting that "consumer" in Jim's statement means any gear that isn't considered fully "Pro". That would mean he's competing against the D3, 1DsmkIII and whatever their successors will be.

I would expect the price to fall in line with that. However, if these are fully upgradable then it's still a big win for customers in my opinion.

no_treble, these are exactly my words.

another quote from fde101 :

> Why can't they target a better camera than the 1Ds mark III and release it for less than $3k?

this is what we are all hoping for. RED ONE brought something for unimaginable price before and I really hope that DSMC will be technically better than 1DS MIII, shoot pristine 2K/3K/4K/whatever video 60fps or more indefinitely for $2999 with 14 DR stops :)

You don't need me to tell you that would be another megabomb. This is changing history, folks - RED ONE, then Scarlet, then DSMC... there is also Epic on the horizont... mmmmm very good! Thank you, Red Company!

... all in all, I somehow feel that current offers of 5DMarkII [costing below $3000, full-frame etc you know it] and Sony A900 [also below $3000] are nothing that we were dreaming of a year ago. I'm very very curious what next year will bring.

!! KEEP IT ROLLING, JIM !!

I am an inspiring filmmaker/casual photographer with 2 grands on my hand.
What will this get me?and how long do I have to wait?

If you make this puppy with a homogeneous lens mount with adapters to Canon and Nikon glass with a price around $3k built ruggedly like the Red 1 the big players in the DLSR market would seriously stop looking at each other and start looking at Red. Competition is good for the market and especially good for consumers, mainly me.

Assuming that the sensor is 35mm still sized, then yeah, a lens mount that could work with various mounting systems would be fantastic. That would be quite an engineering feat, though, wouldn't it?

Hi Guy,
...
Hi fwdinc, Jim is killing tape and improving quality
It's not Jim killing tape, he's just along for the ride with everyone else. If anything he is more of a film assassin. Improving quality, no dispute there.

..even future event and wedding cinematographers will have to adapt or find some other career. I haven't seen one film still camera, not one, at several weddings this summer. Have you? All digital...even the hassleblads.
Its pretty rare, still an occasional one out there. They convince their clients it is a good thing somehow, sort of like their neiche market

Perhaps if you "adapt" to the trend of the future you will be able to add value for your customers and make more money at the same time.
Not sure why you think I am not adapting, I know in my countrie's only formal Video Producers Association I am one of the leaders in adapting to new tech and tools at my level, but only ones that work for me both technically and financially.

...I wonder where all those one-copy VHS wedding videotapes from the 80's are these days.
Most are happily sitting in cupboards and many have been converted to DVD.

The wedding event photographers I know are anxiously waiting for scarlet.

Why would a photographer have any interest in a single chip 2/3" type sensor video camera with about 2MP res?

None of the wedding video producers I know (and I know a fair few) have any interest in it. These people are grass roots producers shooting typical weddings in the mainstream market. Then again, Scarlet is dead, Long live Scarlet. Maybe the new design will be something more appealing to a wider selection of this market. I reserve judgment once again untilwe actually see a product finalised or at least the 'subject to change' status goes away so you know what you are being offered...

I have successfully traced GuyB's network IP addresss... to the Sony PR headquarters building in New York.

haha, not unless New York in now located in Australia.

Maybe Keith is back... :-)

Jim
