  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey all with Dragons,

Been thinking over lenses of late as I am sure many have and came to think of something.

I've loved using the new Alura zooms with my Epic, 14.5-45 & 30-80 great lenses...

I have been thinking if I were to buy a zoom it would be something like those or possibly the 18-80 Alura.

Question is though where does the vingeting begin on the dragon? What would be a better purchase, the 18-80 or the 30-80?

Also, I know the Optimo DP are too deep for the motion mount, what about the Alura's?

Alura zooms are too soft on Dragon IMO. Maybe if that's the look you want - but totally not for me. Too soft.

Angenieux 28-340 covers entire range at 6K HD and is sharp as shit. Huge and heavy - but monster range. I already posted some 6K R3Ds from this lens.

Angenieux 19.5-95 cover entire range at 6K HD. Killer range - awesome lens for Dragon.

Angenieux 45-120 covers entire range at 6K HD. Light and small - awesome lens for Dragon. HIGHLY recommend.

Also ... that little Focus Optics RUBY covers entire 6K FF - 14mm - 24mm for a great low price - I will post some 6K R3Ds from this little guy.
 
I'd like to see those shots. Where are you posting?

Can u also post and example of "too soft?" It seems like the Dragon has a creamy, almost "soft" quality in your test with the match.

I do not carry Alura lenses - I tested them on Epic MX and on the lens projector and they were too soft IMO - as I remember one of them was much better than the other - need to dig up my notes. The Fuji Cabrio or any Angenieux's listed in my post above are much better investment IMO.
 
Bummer, maybe a bad lens? I shot a short this summer with the combo 14.5-45 & 30-80 on two cameras and I fell in love with the image quality. looked so subtle and smooth, was shooting mostly wide open with a lowcon 2 filter mixed interior with HMI and exterior with bounce.

Would love to try them again for something else and see what another set is like.

I think he was referring to the other Aluras, the 30-80mm actually worked rather nicely and was pretty respectable in the corners and borders @30mm with 6K FF.

How are the Arri LWZ in your opinion? Do they have that ultra sharp clinical look of the CP2 line or?
 
To to each their own. Some people think the Cooke 18-100 is to "soft" but many people (including myself) believe it's one of the best image producing lenses ever made. Depends on your preference and what you are shooting, but I think "sharpness" is overrated in the digital cinema era! Long live the classics :)

Interesting. I don't think the CP.2 primes are ultra sharp or clinical at all! They are all around 140 lp/mm or less, minus the two newer ones. The 135mm and 15mm, which are more in line with the general look of the CZs. The CP.2 overall character is just something that bothers me though, and that's my personal opinion. I think the 15-30 CZ T2.9 is going to outperform the LWZ pretty much on every front, but we won't know for sure until April 2014. I really like the CZs. Personally I'd go that route.

I find it odd while doing this test we couldn't find a Cooke 18-100 or any of the Red Pro Zooms, which are pretty common out here. Those will come soon. I've always liked that Cooke.


Just a side note. You'll have to all make judgement calls on what Dragon formats are important to you. Some are shooting 6K FF and that's gravy. However, most productions are going to be shooting 6K WS or 6K HD depending on their respective delivery targets. The way it stands right now, and this is my personal opinion which will change depending on everybody's specific workflow:

Delivery and Capture Formats:

- 2.40:1-2.35:1 - Shoot 6K WS or 6K 2:1 or 6K FF
- 1.85:1 - Shoot 6K FF or 6K 2:1 or 6K HD and extract a 1.85:1 crop
- 1.78:1, 16x9 - Shoot 6K HD

An interesting note, you can extract pretty nice QHD crop from a 6K WS project and net the benefits of having faster frame rates available. So if you are shooting theatrical with a QHD non-letterboxed delivery in mind it's good to know that looks good. If you're curious that extraction is 4608X2592. I'm literally working on an export doing exactly that right now.

Yeah I used the CP's on a feature previously, wasn't too impressed with them until I put a lot of filters in front of them and dirtied them up, they just felt to uncharacteristic and plain from the start point for my taste..
 
I know most y'all are after that super sharp look. I'd really like to see some vintage zooms on a dragon though.
Cooke 18-100mm T3 comes to mind. Gotta check that coverage list though. I'm pretty sure it will only hold up on the longer end
