  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Motion Mount love

Motion Mount love

While the convenience and hoped for neutrality of the motion mount is welcome, it also does something far more important:

The Motion Mount produces a sine wave shaped shutter characteristic similar to the Tessive Time Filter Tony Davis developed. Imagine a 180° shutter at 24 fps with a typical square wave shutter characteristic, like a row of teeth with every other tooth missing - during the time the shutter is open exposure of elements in motion and/or camera movement is captured with the motion blur evenly distributed in terms of density from the beginning until the end of the open time period, typically 1/48th of a second, picking up where the last frame "left off" positionally. This virtually instantaneous on/off property promotes easily perceived "judder", also referred to as strobing, because the eye has to "jump" the positional changes that happen while the shutter is closed.

With a sine wave shutter characteristic the shutter is only completely closed for an instant, with the exposure rising and falling over the "open" period of 1/24th of a second (assuming 24fps) such that the same amount of total exposure occurs one would have with a square wave. The difference is that exposure is distributed over time so that early in the "open" period the light hitting the sensor is less so the motion blur is more transparent, in the middle of the open period the exposure is greatest resulting in the strongest contribution to the frame with the most density, then as the "open" period is ending the density fades proportionally.

The effect of this is the the eye tends to track the position at the height of the open time period with just enough exposure during the time in between the peaks to provide a more faintly represented and motion blurred presentation of what would otherwise be missed during the closed portion of a square wave shutter. This yields a much smoother motion characteristic that one might describe as "more organic" and highly resistant to perceivable judder. IMO it also increases apparent resolution of shots with moving elements or moving camera as the "peak" exposure moment has more defined edges than the time in between allowing it to step "up front" visually.

For shots with a lot of movement, motion representation should be far more natural and much easier for the eye to track. IMO, this is a BIG DEAL.

When you see the world brighter and better than what you can actually see with your naked eye.. thats when Dragon became really interesting !

Kangaroo Point!! I live so close to here, wish I'd been wandering past when you were there, Mark. Your samples have been incredible so far.

I'm more interested why mark is rating this camera at 800 and not double that...

Maybe it just looked better that way? Rated higher it may have stopped looking as much like "evening". He appeared to have lots of room on the histogram, so my assumption was his choice was as much a creative/subjective one.

Anyone else notice that Mark has changed the "night.jpg" shot?
It's now a comparison between an under-exposed ISO250 and same shot brought up to ISO4000 in RC-X, probably to check out the noise level.

I am more excited about this, than I dared to think I would be.
HUGE congrats.

And if you need a crazy norwegian to a non-comparative test, for any reasons, I am sure I can make myself behave and dig out the geek in me for a week or two...
You know hoe to find me!

Nevertheless, this looks really huge!

Man these shots are huge ! Still cropped across two cinema displays !

...can I send in my EPIC-M for the upgrade yet? please? :)

Thanks for posting this Jeff. It tells me that the Epic Ms haven't been called in yet (under a veil of silence '-) and thus helps me figure out that my Epic Xs are a fair distance off before starting the upgrade.
