  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jarred, I know this is a sort of difficult request, but any chance for a still from the shoot. Would be great to see the full r3d and see what a big jump this is from the original MX...
 
Jarred, are you guys expecting future firmware updates to push the Epic-D past the frame rates currently listed on red.com?

that would be interesting on so many levels...especially since each frame would technically be an original inez&vinoodh and they show their "frames/stills" at for example the gagosian....i am also pretty sure that whoever they are shooting might be even more uptight about letting anything come out (beyonce, gaga, even zoe dechanel now won't let people take pics at concerts)....
so red letting a frame slip from this shoot could make a lot of lawyers very happy!
 
i know this is a stupid question but Why 6K?
they could keep the sensor size same just increase the resolution.I dont know the difference but im just comparing 5d mk3 vs D800 they have same sensor size (24x36) 5D mark 3 is 5920 x 3950 Nikon D800 is 7424 x 4924 res..
I dont know how this is gonna end..Think about it you are gonna invest your future ($ 100K) on lenses but you wouldnt use those in next 5 years..

Who knows. What I don't understand is... If Canon and Nikon have full frame sensors now, and given RED's ambition, then why aren't they just fast forwarding to a 6-8K full frame sensor. All this Dragon stuff has me thinking of just sitting on the fence until the "Next big thing" which will essentially be an 8-9K full frame sensor or larger. Why waste the money now. I will continue to invest in lenses instead of bodies.

You don't have to wait for someone from RED to reply to know their answer to this....

Improvements to micro-contrast and MTF produce a cleaner image, drastically reducing moiré and aliasing artifacts. When outputting 6K files to 4K or HD, your image will appear more refined and detailed compared to those captured at lower resolutions. The choice is simple; Bigger is better."

You have to remember that Canon and Nikon aren't providing a full frame RAW MOTION workflow with those cameras (They're still just STILL CAMERAS that happen to also shoot 1080/h.264). Doing that with a full frame sensor will be a monumental feat for any company. If RED were able to do it now (and keep it practical), I'm sure they would.

That being said, they DID announce plans for full frame a few years ago. So we know it's on the drawing board.

Red did increase the resolution if you're looking at it correctly. Essentially what is 5K Full on Mysterium-X today is actually 5.5K on Dragon. Dragon and MX are about creating a great 4K finish. 6K allows for essentially super sampling and down scaling to 4K which will provide a more detailed image both mathematically and perceptually. Also, you'll have a bunch of freedom for things like reframing, cropping, and leveling your image in post if that's your thing.

However, Dragon isn't all about resolution, even though it does indeed have smaller pixels and higher resolution per format compared to Mysterium-X

The other good stuff in Dragon is:

- 16+ stops of dynamic range
- Better low light sensitivity/better higher ISO performance (cleaner images/lowered noise floor)
- New color science due to new sensor tech
- New IROLPF

For some the increase in dynamic range and latitude alone would be a reason for the upgrade. A fat digital negative is a very versatile thing during capture and in post.

6K excites me a bunch too, but there's more to this beast than resolution alone.

yeah i know bigger is better what im saying is 5D and D800 has same sensor size however D800 beats 5D mk3 on dynamic range and resolution wise.If Nikon did this keeping the sensor size same why going towards to changing sensor size in cinema.
Im so damn happy with these updates and sure im gonna upgrade to Dragon only thing worries me is whats gonna happen to all these cinema lenses in next 5 years..
