  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon vs Alexa vs Mx. Now, please!

I agree with your point Ketch.
but would it then be ok to share my own personal side-by-side comparison with others? Or do you feel that is a bad idea?
 
i got a red mx i would put up in a test shoot in nyc if anyone wants? i dont know where to source either other cam tho
 
To have an unbiased side-by-side ARRI/RED test you should hire super hardcore Sony guy as a host (I'm actually good buddies with one) with his own F65 he's brushing dust off every ten minutes or so. Then he'd have to start the video with this "Dear Arri and Red users, don't worry, in my side by side test I will make both of your cameras look like balls. Now let's get this show on the road...". While F65 is a great camera, I think moral of this joke is obvious - you're in power to make all of them look swell... or not :)

I love the idea of that test. I would have a hard time putting the f65 in my backpack for my overseas shooting however. The Epic fits fine.

Jeffrey, of course you can share your side by side tests, however in my strong opinion, this tests can and do encourage the wrong people some times and int the wrong way, and create nothing but noise in a bad way.

This is why I am against doing any kind of side by side.

When I want to compare how a camera or a lens does against an other I simply shoot with it and see how the camera and or lens fills in my hands, in my own production and usual type of work needs and specifications, only then I can see if the camera and or lens does indeed stand up to my needs, and not only as far as image quality bust also as far as the fill and set ups in a real world production.

Both in particularly different ways of course, but I say cameras and lenses because this two companioned are the two most important pieces of gear I'll always consider with care when choosing my equipment.
 
Kemalettin, it would be awesome to see some of your tests. I think the coolest thing in the Dragon is the dynamic range and skin tones. I am dying to see shots against bright windows using Dragon and Alexa to see how far 2+ stops can the Dragon take you when the Alexa already takes you pretty far.
I am puzzled as why all the sudden so many "purists" and "skeptics" against doing tests. Tests are good and vital. Choice is too. No one will force any one to see tests they dont want to see. Please let the Dragon spit some more fire and set us see how far it can burn!
 
Doing a side by side is good for letting MX users see how much better their shots would look if shot by Dragon.
It is also the basis of scientific method. Photography is both an art and a science.
The science part of this tries to rule out emotional bias. Emotions can sometimes trick you.

On this I agree... Just that for me that is an absolute given... Meaning that Dragon is better then MX that is... My opinion is about testing the Dragon against Alexa or C500 or F65 and so on... Pointless unless done for a specific reason under specific needs, and not only for image quality but operational needs, production and or some times personal preferences etc.
 
Since i dont have raw recorder for Alexa + i ll be recording only prores 4444.Arri says there is no difference on dynamic range grain etc. between arriraw and prores what do you guys think?

I would do the test anyway, most people shoot at proress with Alexa. Although it would be incorrect.
However, I think that Dragon is equal to or perhaps have something more dynamic range, but I look a your comparison.

His test are repeatable & you can go back and compare with cameras & film stock from 10 years ago, all very interesting if you don't have an agenda.
