  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

We are still working on final details on the REDMAG-to-RED MINI-MAG program. I would count on sending back the original REDMAGs.

Are there going to be smaller capacity mini-mags available?

I think you guys have me confused with Jarred. I talk about the present, he talks about the future

Just thought we'd try and sneak one past you... guess we failed ;) LOL

Well I just got the bolt kit I ordered at NAB last year, so don't hold your breath :D

Oh, crap. I just remembered mine was ready to ship over a week ago and I never called my BS rep back with an updated credit card number. That's what happens when the order is a year old. LOL!

I was coming more from the few of us who jumped on the R1 from HDV formats, Sony Z1U in my case. I stumped down hard earned, and borrowed cash to deck out the camera, spending in excess of $35k for the pleasure of doing so. Either way it is what it is. I can understand the gripes that many have had with the forced upgrade path as much as I can understand how many embrace the business model of Red. Jim is a proven powerhouse of business as is well known. I simply couldn't entertain the upgrade costs to MX Sensors at the time and being left with a deadline to do so or face pretty much what could be seen as abandonment after being promised so much in the ethos of the path we were on kinda smacked. Like I said, it's the path Jim chose to take, he calls the shots but I'm sure if it was any lesser man or entity doing the same the resonance of the screams of 'Foul' would have reverberated just a tad louder throughout the hallowed halls of the modern film and camera tech industries...

I will one day buy another RED when the time is right.

So, who is going to arrange a group buy for foam inserts for a Pelican 1510 to accommodate Weapon and all the new accessories?

Oh, too soon? :001_unsure:

I bet the Alexa M owners are saying the same thing as they buy the mini...

On the fence about Dragon right now. Can anyone point me toward some good, up to date Epic MX vs Epic Dragon side by side tests that they think are well done?

thanks

Make the jump if you can afford it. I don't have a side by side test since I upgraded the one and only camera I have but the best way I can describe it is you have the ability to shoot something backlit and retain all the foreground detail while barely clipping in the background. I'll PM you an example.

Don't most case companies have stuff in stock for the previous generation Epic X and Dragon form factor? Since Arri is finally adopting the old case design and since RED customers will be buying Weapon cases, Pelican and other companies can just clear out-dated stock by selling it as new stock to Alexa M owners. '-)

I don't think the Weapon upgrade is so much about about image or sensor, which of course will improve with better electronics, but a better designed body that most camera assistants won't dislike as outputs and controls are not in a place they are accustomed to. From what I've seen and heard here this seems to be the case, or at least I hope so. This is one of the reasons RED cameras haven't been widely accepted in the industry. The Dragon sensor is a huge improvement in color rendition and it will only get better as the color science improves.

I recently had a meeting with an executive from a major network and he said he would never shoot anything on a RED camera. This, unfortunately, is what we need to work hard to overcome. I am a big supporter of RED. I have lobbied, fought hard for, and succeeded in shooting over 100 episodes of television on the RED One MX, Epick-MX and now Epic Dragon, but the sell was not easy. I hope Weapon gets us a step closer to having RED cameras be a choice that is no longer questioned.

Jarred explicitly said that was NOT happening, due to liability and confidentiality issues with data that may remain on media, I thought?

He was certainly thinking along the right lines when he said it. Very generous and appropriate to offer a deal on the Mini-Mag program, but I know a lot of us will have potential issues if you make us send the old mags in. The one thing you can't do is sell or reuse them in any way, because data; you could only crush them. So what's the point?

Mike
