  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

my question was: will there be only one weapon or will there be two versions like epic and scarlet....?
Not that I'm expecting an answer from up high. Just thinking out loud. And trying to get the others to play along with the hypothetical game...

If it's a body upgrade with a bit of electronic it makes sense to have 2 versions. Upgrading the scarlet to scarlet dragon to finally throw away the scarlet and put an epic dragon instead would be crazy expensive for an upgrade, for Red and for us.
And the Scarlet is the true affordable camera. Red is seen as an indie company. They should keep the scarlet line.

Like I said for me to get the funds together was a stress but I did, having also spent 2k on dead media after being advised by my bomb squad rep makes feel like I have been kicked in the balls

Yeah, Bomb Squad reps are sorta like college advisers - if you go in knowing exactly what you need, they can help you get it, but don't expect them to be able to help you figure out what you need.
 
Not sure if this has been talked about, but... If I upgrade my Scarlet to Scarlet D, do I have the option to switch to minimag for the same price? If I were to buy a new Scarlet D, it is the same price with the regular or mini side SSD.

That is true, Cosmo. And I also believe that they keep the 2 versions. Because it's also a great gateway drug into the RED world.
But maybe it makes sense for RED to focus on one body to keep cost down.

What about the theory of "thin is in" taking a step further: the brain will be 2 parts. Sensor and boards. Makes for easier configuration, makes for cheaper swap outs and makes upgrades even easier. - for red as well as for the RU ( in theory to me it does ) :)

Good question, but as far as I know the upgrade has only always been for the brain
 
All of this is great news but I'm a rare case. I haven't used my Epic -x once due to works but I will this year. To upgrade my Epic -X to a Dragon and then a weapon is mad crazy to me. Why? that's 20 G's what's the price on the weapon? I haven't seen the camera or footage to jump ship. I did see all of the new things for a Dragon but now a weapon is coming? WOW! That's great but jump before NAM with no stats or test footage? no can do. Best option for me is to wait until you say Epic x to weapon upgrade...if not I stay put and still shoot with one of the greatest cameras in the world or I can move to 35mm film since the agreement is in place.

There's no MX to Weapon option. You must have a Dragon to upgrade. MX to Dragon upgrades end in June. MX will be EOL. This has already been laid out by Jarred. So you would either have to sell your MX and purchase a new Weapon if you choose to do so down the road.

When you do the dragon upgrade they use your current SSD module and engrave the dragon logo on it. You can switch out to the mini mags but you will be paying full price for that new module. As dragon is a sensor and processing boards upgrade not a module upgrade.

Isn't it more; Get Dragon upgrade now and get a discount for Weapon or you can get Dragon after NAB up until mid-summer but won't get a discount for Weapon. After mid-summer you can't upgrade to Dragon from MX, but you can upgrade directly to Weapon, but it will cost a shitload... :w00t:

Remember, Jarred said the $9500 price to upgrade to Dragon is only good until NAB.

Unknown at present. And you don't have to make a decision now. You can wait until that kind of information is released at or prior to NAB.
 
When is NAB and can we get it working and loaded out of the box=)

Tony, not a lot is known yet. But you're pretty safe to assume that the K mightstay the same as its a body upgrade and the sensor is the same.

Think of it a bit of like the hange between R1 and EPIC. Both used the MX sensor at that time but we're different body types.

That said the R1 had less K than the EPIC. So as I said: we don't know shit :)

I'm not sure what you are asking, so if I may...

Upgrade to Dragon sensor before NAB. the cost is $9500. This gives you the OPTION to buy in to the upgrade to Weapon during NAB. Dragon upgrades happen till sometime june or July then Weapon upgrades of Dragons start. Chances are you will hold on to your Dragon and shoot with it for some time to come based on you place in line as an upgrade to your MX started late.

I think I'm explaining this correctly.

I upgraded to Dragon, paid my deposit in June of 2012 and Received my upgrade in Jan of 2013.

OK I get it now.. Trying to read these long threads to see what's going on is crazy. So they want me to upgrade my Epic x to a Dragon for 9500 and then pay 9500 for a new case Right? hahahahaha stop it man stop it hahaha

Yeah, I was merely referring to what happens to those who stick with MX until after mid-summer. But I'm not entirely sure about this though... it may just be that it will cost a lot because you have to upgrade to Dragon with full upgrade price, then after that a full upgrade price to Weapon... don't even wanna figure out what the end sum for that would be.
