  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Most important question is modules for Dragon compatible also with weapon?
I certainly hope the side handle is compatible as my underwater housing interfaces with it. I have my doubts as this question has been asked numerous times and Jarred has chosen not to answer that one.

WOW!!! This RED adventure has defintley been a journey.

this is important for me since im gonna choose weapon path, better not to invest bunch of modules that i cant use next year.

You will be sending in your Dragon mini mag module to be upgraded to the Weapon mini mag module... if you choose the upgrade path.

Alright  -a follow up question to that... outside of the obvious SSD-module change, is there something else that won't work with Weapon? I have the +1 module, quickplate module and side handle. Is there any DSMC mounts like handles and such that will be rendered useless with this upgrade or are we safe with what we got?

wow, haven't been on here much lately but this is potentially awesome news.
Been thinking about shelling out big bucks for a high end ultra wide piece of glass but a bigger sensor and the 14mm canon cine prime that I already own would be the ideal solution.

Your current mount will work on Weapon when you are using S35 and full frame lenses.

Just be clear does this mean all current mounts- including, I hope Leica M as I just spent a lot of money and time rebuilding and modifying M mount lenses. And the way that you worded this answer, is there a different mount possibly in the future- medium format or....?

Wait ....... We don't even know if it's a new camera??? I guess we can dream...... And just maybe it will come to life at NAB. I dunno. Heck the Dragon just came out what a little over a year ago? If it is a new camera what in the heck resolution would it shoot lol 10K lol. I personally hope it's just some add on stuff to get 4k over HDMI and internal wi-fi! That b nice.

Been an early RED ONE adopter and I had quite a ride for the last few years.

I trust RED 100%.

Jim was making all the right moves.

Jarred is doing the same now.

Can't wait for the future.

So, I had a longer term strategy to go from Scarlet to Epic to Dragon. I was getting close to the first step, the move to Epic. I just didn't want to go Scarlet Dragon. But now, with another advance on the horizon, and Jarred saying Scarlet Dragon is included... I'm stumped.

Im on the same boat and now about to capsize.

So Scarlet Dragon it is.

Locked and Loaded

Looking forward to getting all the ballistic details at NAB, exciting times.

The design/form factor for on camera recording media must advance and older media will lose value. It's inevitable. That said, a discounted "package" deal for buying a pack of 4 mini-mags along with the Weapon upgrade would be most appreciated. Perhaps such an offer might spur higher sales volumes which might potentially lower unit costs on the mini-mags which would be beneficial to both RDC and RedUsers... (Sorry about the armchair quarterbacking Jarred, you've likely already looked at this from a dozen angles I haven't even thought of, just trying to help in my usual annoying way ;-)

Thats actually a good idea. Thanks Blair.

As a few people speculated in this tread before me, I'd have to lean towards a larger sensor, could be medium format, and perhaps 70mm. It pretty much makes sense.

- The side module in a Jarred photo could compensate for the extra width needed?
- The new body mention suggests a larger sensor block - though despite the nofilmschool article, I don't think it's larger overall.
- Switch over to the mini SSD required (both physical size and data rate).
- The mention in this thread that:
Your current mount will work on Weapon when you are using S35 and full frame lenses.
- Jarred trademark chuckle, in the Alexa 65 thread
heh heh heh.
- And the clincher might be the Steven Klein instagram - https://instagram.com/p/yvXOxWEnxO/?modal=true i.e. why would a photographer be that interested in RED as, "the future".

That's my arm chair analysis and I'm sure plenty of people here have been thinking this way.

Good idea. Make sure to get the MiniMag option. You will need those going forward.

Thank you so much!
Just got in contact with my bomb squad rep and he managed to change my Scarlet upgrade into a Scarlet Dragon instead of Epic X (the camera is in Irvine being prosessed as we speak)
I'm silly exited about this new Weapon and my head is spinning trying to figure out what to expect. Hope it's medium format + some other fun stuff :)

nothing new or exciting to really add to all this, but wanted to say thanks Jarred and Red. You guys keep showing others how it's done right.

Time to pay for the Dragon Upgrade (X2), dust off all of the MF glass in the equipment room, and book my flight to Vegas...
