Dragon upgrades

Perhaps I found the inspiration for the new name and logo?

"Once more unto the breach!" - i could never have imagined when i ordered my RED 1, that almost 8 years later I am still able to upgrade to a new camera!
I also just assumed Dragon was the end of the road (and what an end!), but guess not... Red Weapon:) - end of fan boy rant.

LOL - just noticed, after looking at the Skull logo for ages (on the other skull thread) - there's a 'W' in the skull design... doh - can't believe I missed it!

Will SSD Modules be part of the upgrade? We send ours in for the new one with camera? And will side handle no longer work with the new design? Thanks

Hi Jarred,
So my $60,000 worth of perfectly working (standard size) SSD mag's I have to now throw in the bin and replace with mini mag's? . oooooooooh.... That's not good mate.
Iv'e got a bit of coin as you know, but I'm not into throwing that sort of change in the bin, especially when they are all perfect condition and working.
Yikes.

Ouch, big time. Totally agreed. If RED comes out with some kind of a discount since we're being forced into mini-mags, maybe that'd make things better, or offer smaller mini-mags. some of us do NOT like putting all our eggs in one big digital basket.

I'm interested to see this camera, but it feels like we just got dragon, now we're doing this all over again.

OK I'm in a kinda weird situation now. I have a Scarlet-X and already paid for a EPIC-MX upgrade but haven't sent my camera in yet. Reason for my upgrade was mostly the higher frame-rate of the EPIC (5K and HDRx are nice too, but not as important to me).
Now, knowing that the upgrade path from MX-to-Dragon is going to shut down (by June, right?), I really don't know what I should do..
- Stay with EPIC-MX and forget about Dragon and Weapon for now?
- Add $3000 to the already paid $9500 and upgrade to Scarlet-Dragon instead EPIC-MX?
- Add $12'500 to the already paid $9500 and upgrade to EPIC-Dragon instead EPIC-MX?

Honestly I don't know where I would get the cash to upgrade to EPIC-Dragon right now, so that's the most unrealistic path for me in this given timeframe.
Staying with EPIC-MX and eventually buy a new EPIC-Dragon-Weapon would be the most expensive option.
Now...I would go the Scarlet-Dragon route if only I knew what framerates that Scarlet-Dragon-Weapon would bring and if there would be a option to upgrade to EPIC-Dragon-Weapon.

That said, I think it's awesome that RED even has a upgrade path, so thanks for that (and a lot more)!!

I guess the only thing I want to know at this point is whether it's worth buying the Mini-Mag module for the current DSMC, or is it worth just waiting but potentially upgrading cards when the "Weapon" arrives?

Crazy to think I and most have really only been shooting on Dragon's for a few months and we're onto the next one already. Either way I'm excited to see what this brings and will likely be at NAB!

See you all there!

Never been disappointed with getting on the upgrade path. Still have my original R1 BTW...now with 2 Dragons I'm very curious to see what Jarred will continue to leak to us!

Jeffrey, I wouldn't buy the mini module as it probably comes standard installed on the Weapon (or as a package price). It'll be like the fan situation when they went to 2.0 fans.

I mean I agree with both of you it sucks. But with that said I remember spending a TON on proprietary media for cameras such as the HVX and EX1 series cameras. And they had a shorter life cycle.

I've been shooting on the same 2 SSD cards starting on a Scarlet immediately after release til now still using them on a Dragon. It's not that I want to buy more, but it's a pretty inevitable change, at least RED is giving you some warning. So for those not in the market to upgrade from MX yet, you'll get some killer deals on media!

However I do feel it's an incredibly quick jump in regards to an actual camera. Price wise I'm hoping the jump is a big more friendly then the last. I remember getting my ready to upgrade email sometime this past summer or fall. Didn't get around to it til about Thanksgiving...

Take my observation with a grain of salt but I'm guessing there will be no Scarlet-Dragon-Weapon. And probably the Scarlet Dragon upgrade path will be more costly than the Epic Dragon upgrade path... to Weapon.

I figured as much. I've gotten pretty luck so far how my cards have played out in this upgrade/planning game. :001_smile:

I just hope the SideHandle is kept. I love it.

I'm pretty sure earlier on in the thread it was said as long as it's a Dragon.

I like to rotate the media in smaller chunks, I use 64gb mags, so in the event of failure, I loose 64gb of data and maybe not a whole day on one failed, FULL mag, for larger productions that an afford the larger media and the subsequent copy times, great. I just like the rotating more mags. It's a philosophy more than anything else.

Battistella

Exactly my philosophy! Pity that the Mini Redmags come only in 512 GB. One mag would last for me at least 2 days, or to put it differently: one Mini Mag equals about 40 rolls of 400 feet 35mm. I would love to see 128Gb Mini Mags.

@Elsie: Jarred mentioned that the Scarlet-Dragon will be able to upgrade.
I think I'm going to stick with the EPIC-MX, make enough cash with it and some day buy a EPIC-Dragon or even Weapon.

BTW, who knows the videogame Final Fantasy 7? There were seven epic bosses called "Weapon"...that looked like dragons. Coincidence? :D

I am in something of a similar plight except haven't pulled the trigger on the Scarlet to Epic trade-in yet. I was getting close but now things have changed. (Don't they always.) I didn't want to go to Scarlet Dragon because I wanted to stay on a path for upgrades; supposedly Scarlet Dragon was the end of the line for that. (Seems that changed, now.)

Now, with Scarlet Dragon owners getting some love, that's a potential path but not very cost-effective. Why pay $12,500 and send in my Scarlet when I can get a new Scarlet Dragon for $14,500 ( and a new body rather than an upgrade to my old one). The upgrade path to Epic still seems like a deal at $9,500 but now the window is closing on further upgrades (June?) so I'd have to scurry to go Epic >> Dragon >> Weapon (hate that name) to meet all the deadlines. All that cash PLUS the mini-mag transition is gonna get costly.

What's a poor (getting poorer?) man to do? LOL There's a forest of options; I need to find a true to climb! :willy_nilly:

Oh yeah no shit, totally agreed. Hopefully it's not a 6K for 6K situation, where the cost is hard to swallow. If it becomes a yearly 10K upgrade then I may have to bow out of the platform, especially when they're still struggling to ship out things like OLPF upgrades. I'll wait and see what the price of the ticket is, before I worry about the ride.

Yes, smaller, cheaper mini-mags. I don't want to buy 2500 dollar mags when I have 6x 128gb mags and 2x 240gb mags. The other hard part is once this upgrade comes out the value of the existing mags is going to crash, and crash HARD. So you either sell now, and buy what's out there, or wait, and take a bath.

Mini Mags because it will be High Frame Rate - maybe 500 fps if the engineers have worked out a way to compress the files even faster on the fly.
1,000fps on burst mode?
And a late night truck ride for filming? High ISO.

Just tell me how much I'm going to owe you now :-)
