  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Maybe the really cost effective business approach to all of this is to buy up a bunch of Epic Xs and 1.8 Mags when they get cheaper.

Jarred, my gentle giant friend.....

I have only one thing to say....WOW!

Should have hugged you harder on Sunday night!

@Elsie: Jarred mentioned that the Scarlet-Dragon will be able to upgrade.
I think I'm going to stick with the EPIC-MX, make enough cash with it and some day buy a EPIC-Dragon or even Weapon.

BTW, who knows the videogame Final Fantasy 7? There were seven epic bosses called "Weapon"...that looked like dragons. Coincidence? :D

Yeah, I just meant that Scarlet will not exist as a platform after this upgrade.

Weapon...

I knew there was something coming at NAB. But this is going to be nuts. :D
Many thanks for the heads up Jarred.

Have to figure out a way to switch to Scarlet-D asap.

Love RED.

I was actually talking to some AC's about buying mini mags yeasterday while doing cam op for one of Offhollywood's productions. They supplied 5 dragons in 3 studios, I think 4 of them had mini mags. I been holding off cause I remember early on there where some cases of mini mags pins where bending. Also every other time I did muliti cam, never got another camera with mini mags. And the last thing that kept me from buying and I bet a lot of other people is the 1 media size only. If they made 256/240gb or 128gb I think a lot of people would of upgraded sooner. The old RED mags are still great and lasted a good 4 years without failure, but time to move on. Crossing my fingers they will come out with more mini mags size options at nab, as I don't really wanna work with 4 512gb for the next at least 4 years?

But they won't become obsolete! There will be tons of R1's + "vintage" Scarlets + Epics around for years and years to come!

Yeah ummm...you don't see RED CF cards or RED Drives holding their value too well now do you? the 1.8" mag prices will fall. Hard.

I think there is definitely some new cooling tech, probably some built in wifi, more fps, and better ISO sensitivity( why else would Jarred shoot at night)

What I'm most curious about are all the accessories/modules for the current form factor
I suppose if they don't work there will be a big used market, especially when red starts selling battle tested dragons

1) THANK YOU JARRED AND JIM!!!
2) THANK YOU to everyone at Red who builds this amazing stuff!
3) Any chance to take our money / get in line before NAB? I guess not since that would reveal too much but I'm not going to be able to sleep for months now. Stoked.
4) Anyone out there who is remotely complaining- please remember, this is a luxury that no other company offers. Please stop complaining or eventually you will ruin it for the majority of us who greatly appreciate this upgrade path. You do not have to upgrade! The cameras you own now are amazing and that's not going to change. Don't be greedy. Appreciate what Red is doing here. They could charge $100k and it would be worth every penny. Arri does and they sell cameras. Red cameras at Full Price are such a good deal anyway.

I know plenty of people that will be happy about that. I know a few who are sticking with MX and not even looking at Dragon yet. And being completely honest I can't blame them. The Epic MX in many ways was a better camera to me then the Dragon has been so far when it comes to needing to warm up to have a clean image before even shooting. The MX was seamless in comparison. N2M the 30 second start up time...

I have to say, I wish you fellas would re-consider your names. Weapons are things that are designed to hurt and kill human beings. Its not really a thing to joke about...

I don't know what "Weapon" does but I like it :)

For the underwater community shifts in form factor also mean investment into another housing. Is that what we are talking about here? We've been playing that shell game for years, so it is nothing new for us. Though the upgrade from MX to Dragon was sure nice because we could keep the same housings.

Or protect people. Or keep the peace... It's just marketing!

I wonder what they say going through customs.

As exciting as this is, I really am curious to hear what we are getting excited about. As great as continuing to upgrade is, there are lots of factors to think about.

- Fast frame rates would be amazing for my line of work
- Bigger sensor would be better. I'm really interested in 65mm

Cons
- 6k is taking up insane amounts of storage.
- begin able to work with any higher res stuff is a bit of a nightmare as it takes editing companies time to catch up.

I'll likely do my carbon, but with think long and hard about my other cameras once we have the specs on what this is. I think it will be logical to either upgrade or sell my MX.

Well, let's be honest. How many people think of "peace" when we think of weapons. I get it that RED has always been about testosterone and being "in your face" but, for me, their marketing has always been their weakest element. Marketing is actually VERY important, as I think we all know.

But... whatever.

Red Fire, Red Spark, Red Flame, Red Lightning, Red Thunder, Red Volcano, Red River, Red Lava, Red Core, Red Atom, Red Mirage, Red Spirit, Red Shadow, Red Wraith, Red Spectre, Red Ghost....

Well I could go on and on but I don't want to be a downer on this.
I made my point so I will shuffle away into the distance now. :)

I think that Red has some other cameras in it's sights, and that may be the thinking. Being that I often film volcanos I'd be keen on Red Magma!

Jarred,

First off thanks for offering an upgrade path, my dragon has been kicking ass since May with zero issues. One question.. Getting in line is it going to be done by serial number or order date? At NAB when dragon was announced some of the staff said order date and some said serial number. I got my order in late thinking I had time.
