  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

If my understanding is correct:
When I consider the upgrade deal w/ the value paid vs value received formula,
it is super obvious what a an awesome deal Red is offering us for Weapon,
and truly proves the the Red mantra, "Obsolescence Obsolete"!

Thank You & Good Work

Daniel, I was looking at it as "how much of my original investment am I recouping" kinda of way. You are taking a different, but also very valid track - "What is my actual net cost me to upgrade - and what is the actual value of what I am getting versus what am I paying."

After talking through it with people at the booth, you can sometimes have a lot of numbers floating around - and get a little lost in them. And until you add them all up, you don't realize what kind of deal you are getting. And, no matter what way you slice it, being along for the ride on the RED upgrade path usually ends up being a pretty good deal.

I know our upgrades and structure - and communication even - can be as confusing as all heck. But at the end of the day, our end goal is always giving people the best deal we can do (within reason).

PS - Frankly, I have never gotten an email stating "Damn, I wish I had never done that upgrade."

Does the $5000 credit is also available if you are buying a brand new Magnisium Weapon body (not the trade-in path)?

The $5000 AKS credit is for orders at NAB only. And there is no MG WEAPON new camera offering at this time.

Is there any way of extending the 8k for 10k dragon price beyond nab for a month of 2? Just because it's tax season and it's a lot of coin in such a short time.

OK, after talking to Fury this morning and to Curt, Tom, and Clark just a few minutes ago, even these longtime RED guys had questions. And they are a lot smarter then me.

Let me try to tackle one of those questions. Let's do some math...

* I am an EPIC-M DRAGON owner that I had before NAB 2015.
* I am placing a pre-order for a WEAPON MAGNESIUM upgrade package.
* The brain and side SSD module I am sending back cost me $31,500 ($29,000+$1500).
* I am getting back $17,500 to send RED my brain and side SSD module.
* So, $17,500 subtracted from my initial ivestment leaves $14,000.
* Since I had my DRAGON before NAB, I am getting a $5000 accessory credit as well.
* My $14,000 net investment is down to $9000.
* I am getting an upgrade bundle which includes over $5000 of accessories at no additional charge. That is, I am getting a bundle with accessories that is the same price as a WEAPON MG brain only.
* My $9000 net is now down to $4000.

RED obsoleted Obsolescence Obsolete? I think the numbers tell a different story.

This Can be seen from a different Perspective, the way I see it is:

Less Than a year ago I need to take from My Bank $31,500 To Purchase a Dragon Body and SSD which is fully functional with my Touch 5" which cost about $1500

at the end I will send my body and received back a brand new Weapon (with a bunch of accessories that I did't asked plus $5000 credits to spend on god's knows what) and need take from my bank another $17,000

For what? Proress and a Few Other enhancements.

I'm sorry, This doesn't make sense. You Guys need to make this more logical to people or offer a more affordable option without all that amount of accesories that you are forcing me to purchase.

**Sigh**

If you don't need what Weapon has to offer - then keep shooting with your Dragon, or MX, or R1. Those are all cameras that are more than capable of producing great visuals...

You get the $5000 credit if you are upgrading to Weapon from Dragon that you purchased before NAB.

You get the $5000 credit if you are buying a brand new Weapon during this week ( not the trade-in path, but the buy brand new path )

So come next week... If you buy a new Weapon, you do not get the $5000 credit.

But next week, or next year, if you decide to upgrade your Dragon that you bought before NAB to Weapon, you still get to have and use the $5000 credit.
Hi,

Please let more Epic/Scarlet owners to move onto Epic/Scarlet Dragon , anyways the line is going to be shut down , let more people upgrade so that we are eligible for weapon. Please bring the $9500 upgrade cost back.a humble request.
I got a red one Mx, epic , dragon and also a scarlet - all the cameras from Red.

I had two epics, both failed and sent for repairs totally 3 times from India back and forth. I have a small request ,

I'm amazed at Weapon and 8K sensor upgrade path later. I have 2 Epic Dragons which will be weaponized sooner but I also had a Scarlet MX which I wanted to upgrade as scarlet dragon. I was ready to pay the deposit and opened my account to get a shock that it has become $12.k again. Can you please extend the $9.5k upgrade rate till some more time. At the NAB frenzy did not expect this coming and all our attention on Weapon. At least a week more , we can pay the deposit for dragon upgrade. We are a bunch of Red lovers from India.
The dragon upgrades are going to cease by June 2015 , why not extend the $9500 upgrade path for a few more days. I did not read it anywhere that costs will increase post 13th April :( can we get the upgrades for $9.5k ?

Thanks,
Aaranyan

aaranyan, it was posted in quite a few places that the reduction back to $9500 USD would be only until NAB.

I did the Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon move well before NAB figuring that'll be it for my indy film self for awhile, then saw the new and wonderful surprise upgrade path to Epic Dragon. Are you kidding? And you people still think RED is going to forget you? Hello, Macfly, hello!? Oh, and meanwhile back at the Canon Farm, they cut the price of my C300 (yes, I know it's not a comparable image, but pricing is) by almost 2/3 before launching the C300 Mark II, making resale value laughable. They couldn't have waited just a month or so after NAB for that last price cut so their users could have an easier path to the Mark II? I know where my bread is buttered.

Nicely said.

right ^ its not like u don't lose out with the other guys, if anything you lose worse. the main issue for me is weapon specs to price ratio doesn't work for me for my needs, 8k VV works, but as great as weapons features are i have a rocket x, i can put 3d LUTs in monitors, i could wait 7 mins to black shade... it seems to me that I'm okay without it, but VV is my only incentive basically for CF at this time the way i see it..

Nobody, Nobody, Nobody 'lives and breathes' cameras and the passion for making film like RED, and Jim and James. Canon doesn't have any figure heads as passionate. Neither does Black Magic. Or Sony. Or Panasonic. And the images from RED's cameras are breath-taking. It is much more than just 'K'. I'm in. For life. Thanks RED.

Just to put credit where it is deserved - I know personally engineers at both Sony and Canon that are as passionate about their craft as Jim, Jarred or anyone else at RED. They have the brains and hearts to come up with things that will blow your mind. The problem is that they are "locked away" at their respective R&D centers and more importantly - they are not the decision makers. The suits at their corporate HQ's are - and sadly they lack both (brains and hearts)...

And how do you know that?

I bet you know all the people behind those companies.

Well, he does say "figure heads" which is an easier position to defend. LOL

And you have to admit, RED is more visible and public than most with their passion and dedication.

Beyond that, I think he is not talking so much literally, but making his point with hyperbole and superlatives.

RED is a new company, extremely new when compared to the rest in the business (ARRI is almost centennial).
And has this so "modern", unique in the business Internet (dependent) system.
It "sells" this passion as one of its foremost arguments.
Pushed by its real owner and head bosses. Which may be good, and bad. In a way it makes it more fragile, more emotional.
Very American, in a way. The Hero of Capitalism. Competitors, meanwhile, are European or Asian.
Of course, it is far more visible and public. Who is or are ARRI´s or Sony´s or Panasonic´s owners? If there are any. Nobody knows. But... is it really relevant?
