  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I think Folks need to double-check before getting a Scarlet Dragon. Like many have been told here, Scarlet Dragon is a "End of Line" path and even if they get the Weapon option, they might be only able to upgrade to a Scarlet Weapon body (meaning less features then the Epic Dragon currently has as before).

I wouldn't sell an Epic to get a Scarlet Dragon without making sure you know what you can get from Weapon. EOL of Scarlet Dragon may also mean no Weapon upgrade. Only Red can answer this. Do check first!!

JStill think the deadline is... weird. I really do. Asking people to commit without knowing what they're lining up for is a tough one.

I think I might not of been clear. The deadline is not for you guys to blindly upgrade to Weapon. The deadline is for people with an Epic MX to upgrade to Dragon which everyone should know everything about by now. Once you have your Dragon, you can take your sweet time to go from Dragon to Weapon.

We have been doing Dragon upgrades from Epics for 2 years now, and having those upgrade lines is very expensive, specially as most people have already done the upgrade so the volume goes lower and lower. Thats why the price went up a few months ago.. and it continues to go up. There becomes a time where its more expensive to do the upgrade than to just buy a new Dragon, which is what will happen this summer, and so we switch over those lines to Weapon.

What I'm gathering is that both Epic and Scarlet are EOL in terms of body style and name. It seems the new designations may be Weapon-centric.

Weapon-centric... Love it...but I will miss the Epic name. It made all my productions sound "EPIC"...ha, ha

So will there be a new Weapon without the upgrade sharpish.... and a little tease on accessories will help. Really need a second high end camera... was thinking Alexa XT before but you guys just rubbished my best laid plans.

Wise Words. All you guys need to do is have a Dragon.

Doesnt matter if it is Epic Dragon or Scarlet Dragon.

If you have a Dragon before NAB, Weapon will cost you less. If you get a Dragon after NAB, Weapon will cost more.

I dont think there is a more transparent company than RED. This is a perfect example. I posted this info for you guys 2 months before any other company would, 2 months before the official release because I felt like you guys needed yet another warning that you need to go to Dragon if you want to follow the upgrade path. We can't put new technology into a camera 2 generations back and more than 5 years old. I don't understand why that is so hard to understand.

Jarred, I think if you put a poll up, the people complaints are probably in the minority. We're all pretty stoked of this continued upgrade path. It's our choice if we take it or not, regardless we all have great cameras still. I'm sad to hear that there is no new sensor as I've been hoping for a 65mm version. I'm sure the upgrades will include something like higher frame rates to entice.

Funny if you posted that upgrades to MX is coming to an end, people would understand that nothing lasts forever.

Great!! Luv you guys!!

What does "EOL" mean?

End of Life. But that doesnt mean the Epic Dragon or the Scarlet Dragon are end of life.. those will live on and we will continue to make and sell them. Brian just is suggesting that in terms of body style and name Weapon will not inherit the same terminology.

Thanks Jarred for the heads up! I have had my Scarlet for a bit over two years now, and love it. As the price of the Dragon upgrade was more then my original investment on the Scarlet brain, I was not financially ready to upgrade. But this news has definitely got me thinking and wanting more. So we now know that it is a new body for the dragon sensor, and that you need a dragon to qualify. For the members that have been involved since the red one mx upgrade to the epic mx body, did this body upgrade enhance the sensor? IE, faster frame rates etc? Or would this be just a physical change not relating to the actual image, but ease of use and other nice features such as built in scratch mics, better audio with xlr and things of the such?

Thanks everyone and RED!

hmm, does this mean 20k carbon body only had a shelf life of 6 months?

You're totally right. What I said would only apply once there is confirmation of where Scarlet Dragon could take you. Haven't slept for a long time and it's late here, I should go to bed before I find myself posting more things that are not thought thoroughly

Hey Jarred. With this news it's looking like there is probably going to be a big influx of Epic MX users (like myself) looking to upgrade to Dragon before April. If there are heaps of upgrades, is there a chance the upgrade price may go down due to the increased volume of Dragon upgrades? Thanks :)

Jarred will the weapon integrate with current modules? Love to see the new design in her full glory :-)

And will we be able to just buy one outright. i want to keep my Dragon but I want a Weapon sharpish. It makes sense to keep the Dragon. I keep the Dragon along with all the accessories and begin building up the new camera system.

Yes. I guess I should've put quotes around "Epic" and "Scarlet" so that it was clearer that I was talking about the new designations and not the actual existing cameras.
