  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Upgrades ...

Its not the high profile stuff.. its all about people.

Yes Michael Bay and David fincher are big dogs.. but Bay spent alot of time with us on making some of our new accessories work better , And Fincher comes in almost every single week and helps with various pieces of development.

John Marchant is in that first 3 not because he is a big name, but because he has donated a ton of time working on the Monochrome and with Graeme on the underwater colorimetry and various other things leading up to the Dragon.

These are the guys that don't just make money using the tools.. they give up time from their incredibly busy schedules to help us make the tools better.. Everyone wins when that happens. We don't pay any of these guys anything, and they all buy their own cameras, so letting them use the cameras they help develop right out of the gate is the least we can do.

Matthew Libatique is another great example. Yes, he is a big dog, but The new exposure tools that give you 50% grey along with sensor clip and lows was developed by him. The guy is always shooting but yet he comes in on his down days and spends hours and hours with us to make things better.

Every one of these cameras you see going out early has a similar story. So don't feel bad if your number is low or you think you should be next and you see someone else out there swinging around a Dragon... its the only way we get to reward the guys that really make a difference and push us forward.. ultimately making the camera that you do end up getting that much better.

So when you see Guys like Phil , or Evin, or Toia get bumped up later next month, it's because they deserve a little nod. We love you all.. and wish we could do everyone at the same time, but we just havn't figured out how to do that yet :)

As it should be! And this willingness by RED to listen to its users (of all levels) and invite them into their house to help the equipment progress is why many of us are here.

..Still throwing my hat in the ring here, I'm ready to test that laser projector as soon as you're ready to send me one. ;)

Yeah we are cancelling the Scarlet Dragon and the Scarlet Dragon upgrade program.. the image from our Scarlet Dragon prototypes are just too good for the price, and our adult supervision has declared that it doesn't make much business sense. We are experimenting with sandblasting the sensor glass to lower the image quality and should know if it could possibly be a viable option as an alternate plan in a few months.

Heh heh.. just kidding. Scarlet Dragon upgrade program is still alive and kicking... but remember Epic-M's get priority on the sensors right now until the yields improve.

Thanks for the minor heart attack Jarred!

Not sure I understand the question, but if you are asking if you can still upgrade the dragon in 6-7 months, then the answer is yes.

I am currently shooting my first full feature film and my first full feature film with my RED SCARLET...Knowing that I can upgrade to DRAGON in the future since I cannot afford the jump yet is a blessing...

Thanks Jarred!

Had me going for a second...very funny...but cruel, lol

Must be that Lo-Con filter you're sandblasting into existence, eh? Sweet!. :-) Thanks for the laugh, and the good news. You think we will see Scarlet Dragon upgrades before the year is out?

I remember a few years ago busting Jim's balls to get an Early EPIC M. He finally sent me one to shut me up.! Sent me an email saying to take it easy on my feedback as the cameras only had some of the features working and he was very hesitant in giving me it at such an early stage because I was quite vocal on the forums. And he new I didn't pull any punches back then... (and still now).
When it turned up I quickly put it through its paces.. turned to my crew and said. I don't know what the hell Jim's talking about, it's awesome !! even without all the features turned on.

After a few years now, I suppose I've earned a few stripes with Jim & Jarred and jokingly I put my hand up to test the Dragon, Jarred jumped on me and said yes... Then let me launch the first Dragon pictures to the world. To say I was a little stressed about that responsibility was an understatement.
But what the hell, I wasn't going to pull any punches again... So the rest is history.

To be in the next batch of DRAGON recipients is a very cool and I will take it with open arms wide with a huge smile on my face.
Thanks Jarred, very appreciative. :emote_happyhappy:

But in the same breath... The current EPIC MX is still more than amazing and could have lasted me for many years to come. We are just being spoilt now. :drool5:

Really exciting!

The whole reason I spent the extra cash to buy two Epic M's late last year...getting Dragon earlier... Ill pay that premium, looks like a great upgrade. Congrats!

Absolutely... The first 50 guys and Epic-Ms always get priority.. but there are of course always exceptions. Fair or not.. some guys just help us so much or have such a great attitude we slip them in.

Jim's tag line for awhile has been the right to refuse service for people with a bad attitude, and I'd like to add to that that we have the right to reward people with a good attitude :)

Mark

We absolutely are completely spoiled now! Isn't it freaking awesome. :)

I can't wait to someday own an Epic Dragon. The very fact that it is even plausible blows me away. Seriously. What an amazing camera. AND IT"S AFFORDABLE.

All I can say is thank you Jim.

Just imagine what our camera options in this price bracket would be today if it wasn't for Mr. Jannard and RED. Seriously. And people wonder why some of us become "fanboys". Geesh.

There are probably very few filmmakers as demending (I'm using that term in a positive way) as David Fincher so I think Red is taking the right approach by covering all their bases, getting feedback from the cream of the crop directors and DPs. I think it will translate into a better camera system and in the end everyone on the list to get one will benefit.

Nothing is ever perfect....but from my humble experience with the sensor and the color science there are going to be a lot of happy campers out there with this roll out.

Looking forward to my two upgrades.....

So at NAB '14 we should expect an announcement of the Sandblasted Dragon for films that want a grungy look?

having been a very small part of getting David Fincher excited about red 5 years ago, it makes me happy that he is still a big fan and is rewarded for being loyal, david makes us all look good by pushing technology to the limit. regarding the delivery of dragon, i am also stoked for the guys that are in the first group. it is exciting to be one of the first as i have been in both of the past 2 models. i know i have not been as vocal in this forum as i was a few years back, but quite honestly a lot of what i talked about is now common knowledge. the experiences i had in the very beginning were new and i wanted to share everything i was learning with you guys so that we could continue to push these tools to their limits and make dp's, directors, producers, clients, labels and bands happy using red. that mission was accomplished 2 years ago. thousands of people now know how to use these tools as good if not better than an early adopter like me and that is a good thing. many top name DP's that i work with have said that if the dragon is 1/2 of what they are saying it is, it will hands down be the best camera ever, including film...and i think that is coming true. for me, the pressure is off, the last two cameras were put in my hands so early that i felt a moral obligation to all of you to shoot at least 8 hours a day whether i had a job or not. and then share the news with you guys, i did and some of you were grateful, but some of you dont even know that i am a regular poster, and that is ok too. jarred has assured me that i will be getting my camera soon and that is awesome, the last 6 years have been a dream and i would not trade one day of it for anything, but now i have two sons and spending time with them is much more important to me than being the first with the dragon, as strange as that may sound to some of you. for all of you guys sub 50 and with an M, we will all get our cameras soon enough, and a year will go by so fast you will not even remember the date you got yours or the position in line you were, you can trust me on that.

we did it...

red built an unreal camera, more unreal than the two other unreal cameras and this one will for sure get EVERYONE's respect, not just us in here. and hats off to all of the redusers who learned how to use their red ones and epics and bought them out on jobs and converted non believers to believers. we did it, it has happened, our little toys ( as david fincher once called red #0031) is now all grown up and in the hands of the big boys and they are all stoked!

long live RED, praise DRAGON and thank you Jarred for continuing the path that Jim paved by being on these boards in the middle of the night responding to every little question that the biggest guys and the littlest guys are asking, few CEO's in any industry forget the camera industry would ever do that, in fact this must be the only company that grosses over 100 million dollars that has such an active management staff interacting with the public on a regular basis...

Now. THIS resonates well.

Dragon is just "more", i good ways.

Very Exciting times!!! Jarred, you rock! Please also let Jim know that we miss him, and I hope he's proud as F*%K knowing his work, will make all of our work (read: Dreams) a brilliant and uncompromising reality. Much is appreciated, nothing forgotten.

I cannot wait to see how the new Mac Pro will eat up R3ds. Fingers crossed it will launch us all into 4k world for real. (I mean easier)
This new computer with the Dragon camera is what I've been waiting for , for almost 6 years !
The next two months are going to be amazing. Game changing for us all.

Oh.. And just watched the "Jobs" movie. I have never liked Aston (what ever his last name is) as and actor, but the movie was good. I didn't want it to end. So much more could have been told.

I am hoping that $10k gets you a 4k FCP-X with screens controls resized for the world of 4k, and machine with enough grunt that does not leave you wanton.

It would be great if someone progresses the on-the-move solution to give you easy access to all your RED footage.
+) Something like, your home system slowly compresses everything to .RED, and while you are there, keeps the last Year of .RED compresed footage on a cutesy 40TB storage pack.
+) While you are away, you have a Mac Pro with a TB dongle from RED that has a .RED decompress ASIC for anything not in .RED cache for the cutesy drive.
+) ...And the ability to download from your home server (or cloud) .RED footage that you have more than a year old.

Can't imagine many people needing more than 40 TB ....and now you can edit anywhere.

This is super exciting! Thanks to all the guys at red and outside of Red who worked their asses off to make sure we all get the best camera possible. Look forward to an email when it comes.

Congrats again Red!
