Dragon update...

Not same size.. Dragon is slightly taller and slightly wider.

Excellent! By what amount? I LOVE how Epic is a 1.3x crop instead of the 1.6x of RedMX. Will Dragon be more like a 1.2x?

Think about this for a second. You bought a RED ONE. You get 100% trade in for an EPIC. Now you get the best sensor in the history of digital capture for $6K. And compare that deal to what?

Those that complain get on "my list".

10% larger both ways is a good ballpark... 30.7mm x 15.8mm

The Dragon sensor is the cleanest sensor you have ever seen. ISO 2000 looks better than MX at ISO 800.

If you bet on RED... the Dragon will be the payoff.

Jim

Now your talking my language... :) Good on you guys,

There goes my SUPER SPEEDS & COOKES.. but I'm quite happy shooting 5k with extra latitude, do I need to shoot a full 6K sensor... Nope :) but latitude is a biggy.
Great work guys.

Epic -M owners will get priority for the Dragon upgrade.

No free upgrades before the NAB special $50k deal.. It has nothing to do with loyalty.. it has to do with economics. As much as we would love to.. as a business we can't give everything away for free.. we already did that once.

I'm more than happy, Beats buying a new camera. Imagine all the dead Alexas out there when ARRI finally bring out a 4k RAW camera. Do you think they will give you a new camera sensor (or upgrade) for $6000? .... they charge you for lousy 422 video slow motion pro res. YIKES !
Keep it coming RED :)

Is it true that only new EPICs purchased will get the free 6K Dragon upgrade? How about the 2 Epics-M's and 2 Epic-X's I purchased? I have to pay $6K for for camera or do we get free upgrades as well if we spent over $50K per order at the time of order. I guess I'm not sure why only new customers would get the upgrade when the old loyal customers who believed in RED (especially with the M series) must pay. Just a question. :)

Really...really? Do you live on this planet? Sorry if that's a bit pointy, but this kind of thing pisses them off enough that they will end up being less generous and more like EVERY other business model!

Will our current mounts still work? (PL, canon, nikon etc) I assume it's a simple sensor swap but I'm wondering if there is changes to the physical body of the camera?

Thanks!

Any lens is useable with Dragon. You may have to window down to a slightly lower resolution. The dynamic range remains the same.

Jim

Can't Wait!!

will the 18-85 be useable on dragon?

I don't think Alexa owners need to worry about a 4K camera, unless Arri isn't being honest with their customers. Arri has made it very clear that 2K is enough for the " foreseeable future "

http://arri.com/camera/digital_cameras/learn/alexa_faq.html

Can I update an ALEXA or ALEXA Plus to an ALEXA Studio?

No. The ALEXA Studio has a different housing, contains different electronics and requires different testing and calibration for its 4:3 sensor. Updating an ALEXA or ALEXA Plus would be prohibitively expensive, and so we donot offer it as an option.

Will there be a 4K ALEXA?

At ARRI we focus on providing the best image quality for cinematographers and high-end features, together with an efficient workflow.
Achieving the highest K figure is of less importance. ALEXA’s 3.5K sensor with its high sensitivity and wide exposure latitude produces gorgeous, cinematic images. Given that 4K digital workflows are still in their infancy, and that for the foreseeable future most productions will finish in 2K or HD, ALEXA is the perfect choice for theatrical features as well as television productions. Furthermore, the ascendance of 3D has resulted in a doubling of image data volumes which further complicates the effective storage, processing and movement of such data. So, for the foreseeable future, ALEXA is ideally suited for 2K or HD workflows in 2D and 3D.

OK... there is a ton of excitement here at RED over the Dragon sensor. The tests are in and it exceeds everyone's expectations.

So you own an EPIC? You get to upgrade to the single most significant sensor in the history of image capture for $6K. You don't have to buy a new camera. This is RED at it's best.

Come the end of the year... there will be a new dynamic range King. It just so happens that there is a new resolution King at the same time. And frame rates don't suffer.

Is this really big news? YES.

Jim

FANTASTIC!! M8 ready for an other trip to CALI any time Jim... ;)

Haven't shot a single frame of 1080p professionally this year. Infancy was 2007. It's 2012 and that little 4k+ slugger can be edited in real time and delivered 4k DCP for theatrical release.

I don't think you have to threaten people. Who's complaining? This sounds like an amazing sensor! Can't wait to upgrade.

WOW!!!!!!!!

I'd be very happy to pay $10,000 for that sensor for my scarlet...slightly less happy to pay $15,000 for that upgrade for my scarlet...but still VERY HAPPY! But then again I might just give in and buy an Epic :) Don't understand why anyone would even consider complaining about $6,000 upgrade price for the Epic.
