  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

I almost did the carbon deal, but decided against it. I have to many epics now... and another one would be just a waste.
So instead I bought myself something else made of carbon as an early christmas Present. :)

Damn you had me thinking this was a skate dolly ;)

Id bomb a hill with that baby!!

+1
Stop me from buying a phantom 4k.
High speed bursts would be a very beneficial ad on.

+1 for bursts! pls pretty please! i'll get a RDC tattoo if you implement it, no bs c'mon guys! And then I'll shoot getting the tat on Red!

I'm no engineer, but I'm pretty sure the high speed limitations are due to the read and reset times of the "non global" sensor or scanning sensor. Otherwise it would be relatively simple to add on some internal memory for bursts. I expect that down the road someday we will see "the next big thing" from Red manifested in higher frame rates and global sensors, or even faster R&R times.

if I am not mistaken the Dragons read and reset times are improved over MX, this is why it has shown an improvement in high frame rates. Perhaps someone from Red can chime in here to confirm this?

I think the biggest limitation is data throughput. Phantom 4k has 9 gigapixels p/s while the Dragon has about 2 gigapixel p/s

jarred ,

do you have an ETA for new color science (on RCX and SDK ) ... if dragon footage are starting to be out i am wondering when (as colorists) we can get the new color science ...

thanks

Carbon Dragons are the one exception..

This is the order we will continue to roll out :

[*]CARBON DRAGON -New Carbon Dragon orders are manufactured and shipped on their own schedule. 2-3 weeks after order.

Sweet! thanks Jarred.

as I was one of the first Scarlet Users, who decided to go for Dragon, this is a kick in the ass (excuse my english).

....

Sorry to be not constructive and being pleased about the great work you are doing, as I am the one who gets it as one of the last ones in the queue, but who entered the queue early !

Steffen, please note that these priority levels (aside from carbon fiber, which did not exist at that time) Jarred listed have not changed since the DRAGON pre-orders for new cameras/upgrades were announced and pushed live on RED.com back at NAB 2013. So there should be no new surprises as compared to when you ordered originally.

So it sounds like there is a pretty good chance people who order EPIC-M DRAGONs today might be getting their cameras earlier than those of us who pre-ordered SCARLET DRAGON upgrades at NAB? Am I reading it right? I guess a lot is left in the air since it sounds like EPIC DRAGON upgrades and new EPIC-M Dragon orders begin concurrently but it's not clear how they will affect each other... Will RED send out one EPIC-M Dragon for each EPIC and eventually SCARLET upgrade notification they send out? Probably not, right? I imagine RED probably builds new EPIC-Ms a lot faster than they can upgrade cameras.

So it sounds like priorities have changed then? Two months ago RED said Epics would upgrade early September and Scarlets late September implying that they would be happening concurrently to some extent, but now Scarlets have to wait until after all Epics, eh?

How is "pre-order" defined? Isn't everything a pre-order until it is a backorder?

Noah, EPIC-M upgrades started heading into the wild late August. I don't remember a post about SCARLET to SCARLET DRAGON upgrades in late Sep at all. We have been doing SCARLET to EPIC M-X for awhile now though....

Priorities have not changed, per my previous post.

A "pre-order" means we are taking orders in advance of product being formally released for shipping.

I don't mean to ask stupid questions here or complain at all. I'm more than happy waiting since I have to drop a good amount on a new edit suite to handle dragon 5k for Scarlet. So I ordered the Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon on Aprill 11th, as soon as I could after the store was open. I've always been sure that Epics come first. I was wondering if it's all Epics before Scarlet? Meaning that if someone ordered a new Epic yesterday and pre-ordered the upgrade today, would that Epic then be executed before my Scarlet? Again, not complaining or implying fairness issues here at all, I just want to figure out exactly where I stand in this. Thanks.

Oh I was just referring to Jarreds post from the thread were September EPIC upgrades were announced:

O.. and Scarlet Dragon upgrades should start shipping near the end of September.

I guess I'm just a little disappointed since I knew Scarlet Dragon Upgrades were going to be delayed quite a bit, but it sounds like we've gone nearly to the back of the line compared to earlier expectations. EPIC-M Upgrades started on time and Scarlet was supposed to start a month later but it seems like it will turn into at least 4 months later...

Jarred, when are we getting a new low end camera or Scarlet Dragon, or a laser projector (I know where you can get 8k parts)?

as a soon-to-be new Epic M Dragon owner drooling at the plethora of new projects to shoot... this news is utterly delightful. now i shall cross my fingers for a more than eventful christmas. RED rules :)

Ah, from his post back in early July. That was before we knew the reality of the sensor yield issues. Everyone was affected by that, not just SCARLET owners. So, you guys did not get pushed to the back of the line, that timeline stretched for all involved.

But the good news is, Dec 1, like Jarred said, the faucet gets turned on more than a trickle : )

It'll be interesting to know when that water metaphor will finally wash over us. January would be nice if that represents the realistic end if the spectrum.

Let it rain! I want to lather myself in the blood, sweat and tears and went into making Dragon possible. Thumbs up to all involved.
