Dragon Update

My limited time in the jungle taught me that as long as there's cricket chatter, everything is ok.

once the crickets go silent, things get a little scary.

We are the crickets... And it feels like we're all holding our breath... Perhaps we sense a dragon is among us?

But no news, whatsoever, after numerous promises from the RED crew at NAB...

I say take your time...if you rush it there will be greater problems...remember Sony Vegas 9??? It was a waist of money because it never got right until version 12.

I could be wrong but I think the RED cameras are the other option to 35mm film, I say that because I was at Best buy and saw a preview of a 4K cine clip and then a 35mm film clip of Total recall on the Sony 4K tv...I was blown away by the recall clip because of how soft and blended it was. The 4K clip was outstanding also, 16mm film is gone because there is only two different mind blowing formats out there...RED and 35mm film. I think film can't die because it's film and cine digital can't die because its a growing format that stands on its own like film. My final thoughts are to compare an original to an original.. Man & Woman...Film & Digital we all play nice together in many ways.

Announced over 2 years ago isn't rushing it? :-)

I feel like that isn't an entirely fair statement. Your referring to the pre Epic shipping Dragon announcement lol? Like come on man, that's a little far back to push things...

Wow. Still nothing?

Clearly you're not seeing the big picture here. Wolf Magazine will be a marketing and branding monster for RED. This will showcase the use of RED equipment in fashion, glamor and fine art nude work thereby creating amazing buzz and word of mouth for RED products. Getting a magazine of this caliber started in no small task so it would follow there might be a small impact to the timeline of other projects. In the end us users will be involved with the coolest brand being used by the top tier celebrity photographers on high profile nude and fashion shoots.

AFAIK, Fuji stopped manufacturing motion picture negative film stocks this year. Film will live on if Kodak manages to switch the gears of manufacturing and lab developing to "boutique" on-demand market, because it's very likely that it ends up there, eventually. For decades analog film was the best (and for a century - the only) quality medium to shoot stills and motion. Tomorrow every decent DSLR will be shooting (compressed or uncompressed) RAW images coming from the sensor chips of better sensitivity (shadows, highlights, colors) than film in every possible way. How film is going to compete with that? People on the analog photo and cinematography forums already discussing how to attract younger people. They are literally begging Kodak to start making advertisements to gain interest of the younger "hipster" crowd that is in love with all things non-digital. They know it might be the only group of people willing to spend their time and resources processing and scanning film negatives. In the meantime "the digital guys" are at the grading stage with their RED / BM / etc RAW footage.

It's not about big Hollywood, filmmakers like P.T. Anderson and Nolan continue shooting film, as well as many others in the industry. I'm talking Indie scene here, I can't imagine young cinematographers on modest-to-low budget choosing analog format and all the costs associated with it over modern digital cameras recording on SSD drives or flash cards, capturing on sensors, that deliver images at least as good or even more flexible (12+ bit RAW) than scanned 35mm neg. Even the good portion of "young hipsters" would prefer to "tweak it in post" using film stock emulation plugins such as FilmConvert. Instagram does exactly that with the photos from iPhone's built-in camera.

I'm not even gonna blab about arguments against digital projection. The term "Public TV" is exactly correct, it was just a public big screen TV for me in my childhood. There's no magic in the constant flicker or in the sound of film rolling. All the magic exists in the mind and vision of a person.

I shot commercials on Epics in March 2011, point was someone was worried Dragon was being rushed. I disagreed.
