Contact the Houston film commission, they might be able to send out an email to their community. I let the one DP I still know in Houston know, but I've been out of Texas for a while.

Sorry to hear that..

Hopefully you had rental fraud insurance.

I'll keep my eye out for the camera, and certainly let your BS Rep know about the stolen camera. This way if it ever needs to be serviced or somebody tries to transfer ownership you'll get it back.

Who let's a $30K++ in assets go out to a total stranger? "Name: James Cole, most likely fake." Dude . . . if you have no credit style pre-screen process then you are going to get ripped off. Get the renter to sign off on a full release of you performing a comprehensive background check. If they are a bandito then they will push back or disappear at this demand. If they are legit then no problem-o. This one was on you.

Yes mistakes were made. Not on me personally as a rental company handled the transaction. Thanks for your positive and productive advice.

would also check Craigslist or the like for new videographers / cinematographers advertising they are now shooting on RED, you would be surprised, found a guy advertising his services years ago with my exact kit listed. Contacted him and followed the trail..

Wow... if such basic failings were done by a rental house in not even checking if the person is giving the right name, then maybe the rental house deserves to be named and shamed? I'm sure few of us here would ever want to lend out to such a rental house again!

I think, thats a bit easy to say. This happens even to the biggest rental houses. Things have changed, todays digital high end cameras are in high demand in also the shadiest parts of this industry. Before you needed things like tapedecks, and other expansive tools to use the most costly video cameras not to mention the film cameras where you needed a budget to roll film and develop and so on.

Simply if a street kid gets a hold of a red camera he is then camera king among his friends. Before if he would steal a Arri435 then the same crew would not be as impressed as he could do nothing with it.

I dont rent out our stuff without our crew any more due to the above. But for those that does I think the only solution is trackers. Simply GPS those things down and get them back. Putting iphones in the cases are a good start.

I'm filming in Houston and Austin this weekend. I'll certainly keep and eye out.

And no, I don't think shaming David or his rental company helps at all. We've all made our fair share of mistakes but the fact is occasionally someone gets one over on us. It happens. His is not the first story like this I've heard. Our job now is to do the thing that I've grown to love about this community which is to look out for each other and lend a helping hand.

If I were in David's shoes id be sick over it. I'm sure he is so dressing him down further isn't helping anyone.
