  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Skin...

Evin,

ive had some issues shooting fire with the MX sensor as the fire sometimes looks really green compared to how it looks by eye. I noticed some of this in the beginning of your fire shots but its hard to know without being on set and seeing the ACTUAL color of the fire. Can you comment on this at all- was the fire yellowish greenish to your eye as well?

Impressive stuff. Thanks!

So, where is the hidden shortcut to a Dragon?
Can't wait.... (but still haven't placed my order, because i can't decide between the path to EPIC-D and Scarlet-D) . Hehe. ;)

Martin, that's a tough one. I don't expose strictly by the numbers, I look at the scene then the histogram and stop lights and try to get the best exposure without clipping that I can.
That question also depends on your tolerance for noise, I shot plenty of stuff at 3200 and 4000 iso that has a pronounced but IMHO beautiful noise/grain so you could say that the sensor probably had 8-9
stops on either side at 4000 ISO if you're cool with the texture. The elevator shot for example was shot at 4000 ISO but I probably could have held the bright stuff easily at 2000.

I mostly set the camera at 1000 iso for 24FPS shooting and upped it to as much as 4000 when I wanted to shoot 96fps.

Thank you very much Evin.

What I see is almost all yellows reds and blues but sometimes the yellow flame and blue flame mix a little and it can have a very slight green edge tint but it looks natural not an artifact of the sensor. I had my eye in the finder the whole time so it's hard to comment on actual accuracy but my feeling is it's very representative of the real colors.

Great thanks for the info.

Oh, btw, is there a chance that you enable downloading the original file? ;)

While the lowcon LP filter option is welcomed, the flesh tones are gorgeous in this test, to my eyes at least. I can only compare it to film (and beyond). Not that I had any serious doubts, but now it's obvious Soderbergh was totally not overhyping the new sensor in that interview:

"They’ve got a new sensor coming out, the Dragon, that’s fucking insane, like it’s a whole other level in terms of dynamic range, resolution, it’s crazy. I’ve seen the tests on it, it’s nuts. These guys just stay up really late and they’re just never satisfied and they’re constantly pushing it. So I look at it as…if you’re conservative you should probably use something other than the RED, if you’re someone who likes to live dangerously and push stuff then you should be using the RED because that’s where it’s at its best."

Dear Evin,

Two very quick questions:

1. Could you notice the "no penalty" feature when switching ISOs?

I'm excited about using low ISOs in daylight (100ASA, 200ASA, 320ASA) and only having to use regular NDs (.3, .6, .9 - nothing beyond - like with film). All without penalty at the high end.

Any feedback on that? Thanks!

2. How about the new IR filter? I hope it's not needed anymore up to ND1.2. Anything you noticed along those lines?

Thanks Evin!
George

wtf ....
wonderffffffullll.... elevator incredible ...
the skin ton wow wowow ....

I have no words,
EVIN,what was the maximum that could record at 6k? 8:1?

thanks you so much :)))))))

So happy that you got to play with Dragon, Evin. Great test. Amazing quality in the direct sun and shadows shots... Just beautiful. This is the camera I've been dreaming about...

That is very hard to quantify, I was running around so much and trying to cover so many bases in one day that I pretty much kept to my normal SOP for filtration and exposure.
There were times where I'd knock the ISO down to 400 or 500 and I did not notice any difference in the actual DR but ratio from over to under seemed to shift proportionally as you would expect, albeit with a much greater range to work within.

I think there may be a bit of a misconception that if you drop your ISO and do not also adjust your exposure that you will have the same distribution of stops from over exposure to under.
This is not my interpretation of what was meant. The sensor has at least 1.5 or two stops more in the highlights and 2.5 to 3 stops in the shadows, along with a better S/N ratio and a more film-like noise character this means you can push the image at least that much up or down from an MX image.

Remember that ISO is just meta data, so by changing the ISO you are only adjusting the midpoint of the curve that's being used to convert that DR from the linear sensor data.
If you expose to hold your highlight detail just below clip then you will have the maximum DR available at any ISO setting but your distribution of that data and hence your midpoint will shift as you change ISO up or down.

I was using Hot Mirror combo NDs since that is what I own, I did not notice any IR pollution with or without them.

Luigi, I think 5:1 but I don't remember, I shot most stuff at 8:1-16:1 depending on my high speed requirements, didn't see much difference between any though.

I like the look of the chip. its new.

the problem with all digital, is that the 'stock" is always the same. Nice to have a new stock to choose from.
