Really like this menu feature in the beta firmware. Very nice addition. Running it at 12.

It shouldn't matter cause it's RAW, what does it do? Makes the monitoring sharper?

I like this feature a lot. I don't feel I need the focus assist nearly as much.

It allows you to apply sharpness to the monitor feeds.

Does it change anything at all in the final recording? Sounds great to have it only for monitoring.

No, just on the monitor feeds. If you applied it and recorded the feed to an external recorder it would, but does nothing to the r3d.

Where I find this particularly useful is broadcast or anybody using off board recorders.

I had a fun time checking it out with the 4K Broadcast Module on a UHD 4K screen. Very cool. And remember that's the image before it's compressed and written to REDCODE RAW, although sharpness doesn't get written into the raw file of course.

hey phil

if you were kicking out proxies on a samurai via sdi or hdmi the sharpness would hold though wouldn't they?

Yes sir they would. That's exactly what that feature is for.

Rolled to my Pix240 all last week from Dragon. When the look absolutely has to be captured in camera, this feature helps tremendously.

Is this a dragon feature only? Also if you add it. Does it only show up in the camera or does it transfeer as metadata to the r3d and control the post sharpening?

Yes does it transfer as metadata?

From what I understand this is Dragon only as it has the extra horsepower to handle this process through the HDSDI and HMI. Additionally, the 4K Broadcast Module handles the sharpening on the 4K and 4K+ material and can't be used on Mysterium-X.

And nope. This doesn't transfer to metadata. But who knows what will happen in the future.

Phil, how are you liking the broadcast module, do you feel its worth the price ? Are you monitoring in 4k often? Have a film coming up that will be finished in 4k so I am thinking about live 4k monitoring for focus etc.

I've only tested it, but I've spent a good amount of time with it. I've done some consultation work for a studio who is rigging Epic Dragons with the 4K Broadcast Module.

I'm not monitoring in 4K "often" yet, but I see advantages for locking critical focus for sure. At some point 25-40-ish inch HD and UHD displays will be common on set.

What is cool is having the 6K HD signal down converted to 4K HD (UHD 4K) and I love that. I can also confirm that the SDI to HDMI converter works well. It's very interesting seeing the 422 stream pre-REDCODE RAW encoding.

The sharpening feature is really nice to carve the look of your outgoing signal, especially if you recording off board or know sharpening will be a part of your post .R3D pipeline.

Why can't peaking be this good. I just turned it on and its great, seems to work better than the focus assist. Less of the noise shows up.

Which converter have you used?

The one I've been using and recommending is the Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Quad SDI to HDMI 4K. Works just fine.

Peaking is just a focus assisting tool and shouldn't be sent to an outboard recorder. Just different tools really.
