I´ll update the first post with findings and important info:

Available compression ratios in requested 6k formats on RED EPIC DRAGON

Testing long take, 3 hours, to USB3 drive (2TB) ...

What is the lowest compression available at 6kHD via tether? Thanks!

havn´t done any tethered testing on the epic yet, want to test overall workflow stability on the scarlet first ...

usually, i am shooting on the other end of the spectrum, meaning highest compression 22:1 and getting the most out of the media at hand
now with a harddisk recording solution, i may as well change ;-)

so overall, my testing may not be as relevant for everyone reading this, since i take it many are into shooting the cleanest image possible and so forth.

I don´t mind the noise coming from shooting at the other extreme, though - i tend to like it.

so, in terms of workflow exploration, i had a little fun yesterday evening, shooting tethered motion, available light, basically a desktop lamp and the computer screen,

config:
scarlet dragon, 48 fps 5K FF, 22:1
capture .r3d into RCX, pushed, curved, and so on ... ;-)

have a look, in my mind, we have a harddisk recording solution for the Dragon family ... :-)))

Will do "clean image" testing soon and report, stills and motion, of course!

cheers,
Detlev

Yes, very curious about this... might be a good way to work in some studio shoots.

Tethered shooting... I remember running around with an umbilical connected to U-Matic then Betacam field recorders... ahh, the good old days :)

Hehehe ... i remember a long long time ago ..... tethering 10 miniDV cams over firewire to 10 Mac mini´s to get over the tape hassle and do "excessive" multi cam work .... LOL
was remote controlling, sync starting via scripts and had video feed over "Apple Remote Desktop" ... fun times .... maybe i can find a picture of that madness somewhere ...

cheers,
Detlev

So if you thetered it to a faster computer and HD you would get better compression?

Well, I have no idea nor information on wether the available ratios are "hard coded" or the available "safe data rate" on the pipe is actually tested between cam and computer, i just wanted to state as clearly and as far as i know it worked with this specific configuration .... i find it pretty remarkable that it works as well on a low end configuration akin to a Macbook air or such ... makes it easily portable for long format situation ... ;-)

... and from the Beta Build Firmware 6.0.10 .... "Menu > Settings > Recording", i take it something "external" may be coming our way in the future ...

there are 3 storage options ... Local / Network / External ... fascinating (!)

External recording has been around for a while. It allows you to trigger external recording devices, that is HDSDI/HDMI recorders, with the camera. In this mode you don't need an SSD in the camera.

cool thanks, Trent ... never looked there before ... ;-))

No, it's Gigabit Ethernet thats sets the limit. That's the reason we really need a copper or fiber 10-Gigabit Ethernet port.

Trent, any word if this is on the horizon? At least for WEAPON CF? Really need to know this in order to make an informed/correct purchase decision. An answer is VERY much appreciated.

with all this ProRes talk, will this be the answer for a ProRes on the Epic?

...with BM, if you have the codec on your computer you can use it... is this the same?
