I can't find the OFF TOPIC thread for Dragon suggested by Jim as "Enter the Dragon" has become so lengthy. Please post here for simplicity or refer to the appropriate thread. Thank you for consideration!

Not sure which one you are talking about but if its the one I think, look for Phil Holland's name and click on it to see his posts. That should help you find the thread Phil Started that sums up the Dragon, IIRC. (One way to check for Phil's name is to go to the forum link, then scroll down to the bottom of the page to see who's online at present. The names are listed alphabetically and clicking on a name will send you to their profile page.)

Still searching out Phil's Dragon threads and thank you Elsie on the heads up FYI!

I think this was from page 43 or 44 of "Enter the Dragon" from Jim pleading, "It is hard enough to get through all the pages without a page worth of jokes... let's do that on another thread in Off Topic. :-)"

Jim

Actually I'm just hoping for anything SHORTER that sticks to info, suggestions, dollars, Red stories as I need to start to taking notes about where I last left off... The thread is becoming ponderous!

What Jim meant is "Take the jokes to an Off Topic thread" not "There's more info in Off Topic".

Phil made a thread in the Epic forum with all known info (and links) about Dragon.

Yes, I understood what Jim said but yet fan boys and jokers rarely take advice so I started the thread that they would not. Thank you for the Epic Forum tip as this is exactly what was needed here!

Mark, Not sure if you are aware but something I've found helpful in long threads is to click on the "Red Team" button in the upper right hand margin. once you've read a post by a member of the Red Team in that thread, click the button again and it will go to the next post by a Red Team member. Helps get by all the complaints and thank you's that often get posted in an active thread.

“Brilliant,” (quoting Geoff Boyle’s favorite phrase!) posts, all of you! If I was to quote only one other very interesting technical point for discussion (they are so many!) I think it would be:

As it is any Cmos sensor suffers from debayering, down sampling is an easy way to improve on that matter. So shooting 6k gives a really good 4k finnish. Shooting 4k for 4k does not hold up in the same way, far from it, so with all the talk of 4k cinema the cameras actually needs to deliver higher resolution.

I'd be interested in knowing more about what the suggested computer specs are for editing native 6K R3D. Am I going to be able to get by with, let's say a i7 980X, 24 GB RAM and a CUDA compatible GPU (such as a GTX 570) or will I need to spend more? Thoughts?

In re: the Dragon-ready computer, I'm going to try and get by with an AMD FX 8150 (8 Core) with 32 GBs of RAM. I've installed that on a Sabertooth 990FX mainboard. I'm also going to try and get by with a GTX 560. I chose that after researching and learning it has 256 bit memory interface and 336 CUDA cores, which stack up pretty well for what Adobe Premiere CS6 (my NLE of choice) requires to operate with some efficiency. I think the 560 may be being phased out, so the 570 is probably in that range of these two important factors for Adobe use.

One thing that I think is going to be a real plus for my system is the fact I am using a 256 GB OCZ Revo Drive 3 as my system and application drive. It installs as a 4 lane 2.0 PCIe drive instead of a SATA III 6 Gb p/s drive. Originally planned to install a 1TB Revo Hybrid (also 4 lane) PCIe drive as a second level drive (put immediate source material onto that drive for editing or for saving trimmed source material) but when I tried to install it, the computer tries to separate it into two partitions... one for the 256 GB SSD and one for the 1 TB 5400 RPM hard drive attached to the board of the PCIe hybrid. I'm thinking I lose the efficiency this drive would afford if installed as the primary drive instead of as storage, so I may uninstall that and save it for use as the OS drive in a later build.

I plan to install two RAID 0 sets of 3 TB drives (12 TBs in all) to give me access to source material and save projects to. I have a 60 GB SSD that I plan to install for placing the smaller cache files on.

I'm in the preliminary stages of completing my build and so far with Windows 8 and CS6 Premiere it seems those two are symbiotic with one another, although I haven't attempted any projects yet. Got to finish with the RAID 0s first and decide on the Hybrid Revo Drive issue.

I'm hoping this system is able to handle Dragon flies... I mean files, to the point it won't bog down. It's what I consider to be an affordable system for my operation so if it won't, I'll just have to shoot 5k instead of 6. '-)

Really interesting how the 4 lane PCIe concept ties in with your idea of going 32GB RAM with an 8 core AMD CPU as I think/hope that math will work better than 32GB would on a 6 core i7 CPU as I'm using with Sata IIIs. I've heard that 32GB is wasted with a i7 6 core and the sweet spot is 24GB, especially if you're hyper threading. I guess we'll just have to wait to get hold of some 6K R3D files to test with!

My computer is in its second incarnation after shorting out earlier this year. I did the first build but hired out to do the second rebuild to plan a better drive configuration/new case etc. I was advised to avoid hybrid SSDs and also to avoid Win 8 (with my system) which I'm doing for now, sticking with Win 7. When I do get the chance to test 6K R3D in CS6, it will be from a 10K V-raptor to a 480GB SSD (not hybrid) boot. Hopefully, this will be speedy enough but you've got another good point about shooting lower res until you can make it work!
