I've been following Mako Koiwai on CML reporting heat issues with Dragon.

Can Dragon users report their experiences so we can get a full picture?

Thanks,
Mark

Just read a bit of that right this second. I didn't see what the Adaptive temperature was set at, so I'm more or less curious. Don't know even why it went into yellow.

I personally use 65 or 70 degrees and don't have any issues in warm or cool weather, so I'm more or less confused at what's going on.

Based on his described shooting conditions part of me thinks hardware failure, a larger part of me thinks user error. Hard to figure out which without being there.

if i got it right, it was the blackshading temperature warning. not a camera fail. or actually "wrong". but i can get that what Mark writes about setting goal temp is not knowledge one intuitively have....

yup. but he has not replied to wether he shut it down due to yellow warning, or if he shut it down. later he says "same symptom with different dragon.

i dunno.

I'm hoping nobody else has had the experience - just conducting a poll...

I have not seen any reliablility issues on the Dragon. Neither the Proto or the delivered.

I was a bit surprised with Makos remarks, and I still wonder if the camera actually shut down or if he shut it down due to the Blackshade warning.

Earlier in the string, Mako reported camera shut downs:

He's the only one who has reported an overheating issue. Pretty sure other Dragon owners and users would report it if they were having the same issue. There had to have been some setting wrong because he said he cycled fan settings because adaptive was causing overheating. He's never answered as to what the fan settings were and could have been set incorrectly. He's been very vague on the situation...

Anything is possible in terms of something being up with the camera, it is a rental body after all. So that's on the table.

During my first week of testing the camera last month I fired off 60-80 minute takes and haven't experienced anything like this.

I have no idea what these guys are doing - but in Adaptive Quiet record - target 70 degrees core temp, tight set - 12 + hours a day - non stop rolling with LONG takes - day after day - no heat issues. No fan issues.

I'm too lazy to log into CML, but I worked with Mako the other day on a Job, and we had a dragon on set. We did not experience thermal issues of any sort, and were doing fairly long takes.

This is literally the only report of any thermal issue I have heard.

I think you guys make some very important cases here:

Blackshade a camera after it has been up and running for 30 minutes or so, so that its blackshaded at "operating temperature" right?

Blackshade it in the fan mode that you would be running in on the set that day (blackshading is faster than it used to be by a mile, so its worth it right?)

Any other suggestions for people having questions or issues?

I don't think anyone is blaming Mako for the situation he is in, but from what I have seen Dragon is ready for primetime.

Assuming your color suite is setup and ready for the footage.

No heat issues to report on our dragons. So often what gets reported as 'overheating' going way back to R1, then Epic MX isn't overheating at all, rather its misunderstood warnings, fan speed changes or other occurrences which should neither alarm nor surprise a clued up operator.

mine is set to 65-70 I have not had any problems of any kind.

People should learn things before they write stuff on Cml. Did he contact Bomb squad? Does he even know they exist? A camera issue is not dealt with on a blog. This just harm our tool. Bashing the Epic again!

HOLY $#!+ Phil!?

Actually sort of disagree.
He rentd a cam. It should just work.
The ones renting it to him should have set it up and informed. To have every user calling in to the bombsquad before using the camera is kinda preventive.

And I did not know all the relations before I read Marks post on BlackBalancing.

So I am guilty as well.

I can kinda understand grumpyness if something feels unreliable, and he got an answer from being grumpy.

The challenge is to avoid grumpyness in the first place...

We worked our dragon hard on very hot temps last week... no heat warning appeared. I did notice however that the new fans that are installed are working hard to combat temps, as its the first time my top handle was hot because of the air being pushed out. But the camera didn't miss a beat. Super stable.

On a side note... The current Dragon sensor is way way better than Beta DRAGON we did the first tests on. Especially shooting into the sun. I still think 250 ISO rocks... I haven't seen any noise as yet. :)
