  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

Was this responsible for the CA issues the Xenon FF lenses were having on Dragon?

Possible, as this was also an issue we had with the Summilux C Primes against the Area 48 Soft, which despite been LED's are very Bright lights.

But again, any reddish flare is easy taken care of in post when not wanted.

No. The CA "issues" are what is exhibited with this level of glass when shooting wide open and wider apertures in high contrast situations. It is the same for the CA exhibited on all lenses under those conditions. However, certain lenses do render that effect rather colorless, but then you're dealing with a whole different price point.

That had nothing to do with this OLPF.

You sure Phil? I wouldn't be so quick to write this idea off. The Magnanimous Media test revealed that the Xenon's had very consistent CA as you stop down (the best of the bunch). Thinking back, the only Xenon images I've seen which demonstrated troubling CA was Jeff's snow shot and that neon Vegas sign... both shot on Dragon and both featuring light sources (well sorta).

I think this idea is worth considering again.

I'm pretty sure. I've tested the lenses on "various" cameras now and seen them on a projector. I was initially worried something was crazy somewhere, but I've since tested them again and my results line up with that Magnanimous Media test.

Though I haven't seen this neon sign image.

Sorry to sound like a complete tight arse Jarred...
Unlike the lucky many that live in the US and can easily send in with little to no real cost at all.
I on the other hand am getting raped by FEDEX bills every time I sneeze with a RED repairs, purchase's, upgrades, and fix-ups like these.
Not to mention customs fees, taxes, handling etc etc etc..

Are you guys picking up the courier costs for this recall / fix up... Or. ?

would be nice to update the new OLPF and a new firmware without having to return the camera.

Anyway nice job RED TEAM.

The OLPF you can replace on your own. Do be extremely careful and in a very clean room if you attempt this.

The color science, in this case tuning the sensor's calibration to play nicely with this new OLPF, is an underlying update that we can't perform via a firmware upgrade ourselves. Access to those goodies is Red only from what I understand.

While a bit of bummer the cameras have to be sent in (especially for those who live half way around the globe), they are providing the OLPF and update for free. Which is good.

.

Well, that's good. I thought the Xenon's did very well in this test, demonstrating minimal CA (compared to the Canon and CP-2s).

I Though I haven't seen this neon sign image.

Whoops sorry. The Vagas image was from the Blackwood Cinema Dragon / Xenon test @ 2:20 here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...pic-Dragon-00015-(Blackwood-Cinema)-Las-Vegas

The CA on the signs look like it could be related to this Dragon OLP issue and not exclusively the fault of the lens.

To add... The focus is obviously not on the same plane between shots so let's def hold of Pixel peeping.. It illustrates the OLPF change with regard to the much noted artefact.

Very good to hear that everything is being attacked and solved...

I would not worry...

If those images are in any way an indication of a side-by side shot with same exposure, I see reasons to believe that you can get away with a lower exposure with the new OLPF with less side-effects.
I will NOT go on a pixel-peeking rampage based on these preliminar images, but I see a lot I like from that comparison. The flare is only one of them. It fits pretty well with what I hoped the new color-science would be about.

Yup... A very good example of my "tests only give valid info for what you test for" statement... :)

This is great news, though. So glad RED picked up the ball on the OLPF flare.

In case the flare wasn't obvious... some level adjustments...

By these examples it seems to put an end to "Milky Magenta" (note how the flare was casting in to skin). This really is good news. I wonder of this is just the OLPF or also a sensor box adjustment or proximity to the sensor as well because based on this the red dot flare must be squashed as well.

Yeah thats what I thought to. Looks very promising.

Whatever it is, it works, maybe coatings on the front and back of the OLPF, who knows. The color science can be tweaked around this for sure.

Just kudos RED, kudos.

IMpressed with the color, besides the flare, color looks amazing!

Way to go RED... again and again!!!

thank you Graemme for all the magic!

Love you man!

What is the process for freezing our cameras in place while waiting on the new OLPF? And will there be an adjustment on the 90 day warranty if we leave our camera at RED for a month while waiting?

OBTW, probably need an answer to the above pretty soon since my camera 1 has been at RED for a few days now and I really don't want it returned until the combined OLPF and tweaking can be done when upgraded.
