  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Dynamic Range Test - 21 stop chart

Awesome DR test. Thanks Björn.

Disappointing to see it blow out when pointed directly at the sun. Ha - just kidding - that's fantastic Björn! :)

I know, I actually went back out to shoot with one stop higher but then the sun was behind the roof.. The Dr would have been more than enough as there was no noise at all in the lowlights/shadows so one or two stop lower and develop at 500ISO instead of 250 and the sun would have been a yellow ball on a blue sky :)

Thanks, Bjorn,

Which OLPF/Firmware?

Also, if you really want to have some fun, slap a 1/8th Digicon or Lowcon on Dragon. Or as Evin recommended/enjoyed a 1/16th Schneider HD Classic Soft. You know, because that's pretty much how the Alexa sees light and how everybody has measured it minus the few who measured without that low con in there. I mean ON I think published it was a "true 14" without that filtration in there and the low con is spreading it out that addition bit more.

Thats the secret sauce.

Thanks, Bjorn,

Which OLPF/Firmware?

I did not check I got the camera back today with what should be the new olpf and I assume the latest firmware...

The olpf however looks really red /magenta when looking at it... I thought the new oops did not do that so I hope they did not forget to swap it. any how it works like a charm :)

The new OLPF (blue glass) does actually still look very magenta in most conditions, when its the right way around. If it looks otherwise then its one of the early ones that slipped the net back to front.

At the risk of shaking the fanboy beehive: I haven't done anything side-by-side with the Alexa but just based on my experience with my Dragon that arrived a few days ago I think the Alexa still has a slight edge over the Dragon in terms of DR. It's definitely close though. The Dragon has great DR but I'm not quite sure it's an exact match to the Alexa. Maybe I will learn how to squeeze out the extra stops you guys are talking about in post but from where I'm sitting, the Alexa looks like it has a half stop of "useable" DR more than the Dragon, maybe even less than half a stop. Just my opinion based on my personal experience with both cameras.

Dragon has the resolution, the size and the price tag clearly in it's favor though.

Here are the measurements for the Xyla-21 using a Minolta LS-100 light meter. The measurements are in nits. (cd/m2) Meter was placed around the same distance from the chart as the camera was.
