  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I hear my name :)

So the first thing that needs to be discussed is that there's no MFT mount for any Red camera currently.

There is however a Leica-M DSMC Mount.

The Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 works on Dragon with this mount and will cover 6K FF.

That adapter is a Leica-M to MFT, not the other way around. Additionally the MFT lens will likely not cover much past 5K, but I can't be sure because we can't mount it :)

You're reading the adapter specs backwards: it "allows the use of rangefinder M mount lenses with any Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera body". The only adapter that would make a m43 lens work on an M or EF or PL lens mount would need to be a lensed extender to radically change the convergence point of the lens. As for coverage, the m43 sensor is 1/2 the diagonal of a 35mm sensor, which means that in DRAGON-speak, that's about 3.5K horizontal resolution[1]. That's about 50% better than a BMCC m43 camera, and the OLPF means that you don't have the horrible moire that constantly infects my BMCC shots, but the problem remains that there's no way to mount the lens deeply enough within the sensor well to achieve focus.

[1] Dragon 6K = 1.17 crop factor vs. 35mm; m43 = 2x crop factor vs. 35mm; 1.17 / 2 * 6K = 3.51K horizontal resolution

whats your reason to go with M4/3 glass though ?
you know voigtlaender make these lenses for FF35 and medium format cameras too ? but I guess the price point would be considerably different.

The only reason I looked into the M4/3 glass is that I can not find such lenses in FF35, I'm aware that Voightlander makes FF35 but not these F:0.95 lenses.

Thanks Phil. It's unfortunate that there's no way as of now to mount these gems. So the Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 will be a 20.6mm in a 6k Dragon. That's not desirable.

Thanks Michael,
It appears to me that is better to buy a GH4 to take advantage of these lenses and cut and mix with the Dragon.

Not sure what problem you are trying to solve. GH4 is not a low-light champion, due to smaller photosites, so you need more light to get good images compared to DRAGON. Thus, from a pure low-light perspective, you'll need f0.95 just to keep up with what DRAGON can do with f1.4. Secondly, the shallow depth-of-field effect for a 17.5mm f0.95 is equivalent to a 35mm f1.9 lens on FF35, or a 30mm f1.6 on DRAGON. So either way you slice it, you can get better lenses with better light transmission for DRAGON by just using what's available in the format.

There are some good reasons to get the GH4, but doing so just to get access to the Voigtländer lenses is not such a reason. And if you have a DRAGON, you should focus on the lenses that take max advantage of what the DRAGON is, rather than trying to make it something it is not.

Michael,

Thank you for your detailed answer and your guidance!

I like to shoot with very low light and thought that the 17.5mm F:095 might have a benefit fitted in a Dragon but it appears that I did not calculated that it'll be equivalent to a 35mm F:1.9 lens.

>>you should focus on the lenses that take max advantage of what the DRAGON is

These lenses are 30k a piece so for me shooting mainly 3D make it 60k a piece, not for my budget at this moment but I'm working on it.
I'll buy the 12mm, Noctilux and the Leica adapter though.
