So... I had 15 minutes of unpretentious fun two days ago.

I took my Red Dragon camera and I put on it an extremely cheap ($20 from eBay) Russian lens. For the ones who don't know it, it's an Industar 50-2 F3.5 lens in M42 mount (I used a cheap M42 to PL Mount adapter to get it on the Epic). Great little cheapo lens, actually a copy of a famous Zeiss 50mm Jena Tessar pancake lens from the old days. I put a small focus gear on the lens to help me, but pulling focus so close to the PL mount with the tip of your fingers (the aperture moves with the focus, so you have to reset it each time!) is difficult to say the least. Therefore you will see some slight aperture/focus problems at times, but who cares in this instance. Check some pics of the combo below. The lens is extremely small:

I went around the corner from where I live and I shot a few shots in the Central Park Conservatory (a small hidden gem in the park), taking advantage of the Spring, the flowers and the multitude of colors there. Absolutely nothing fancy, literally just grabbing cheesy shots of flowers very fast as I walked around, as you will see. A couple of shots from my balcony to wrap it up.

A few things to keep in mind. First, this is STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA, unaltered in any way. DragonColor and RedGamma4. I literally didn't touch anything in post, no curves, absolutely nothing. I even left a couple of slightly underexposed/overexposed shots in there, choosing not to fix them at all. 10 minutes of proper color correction would make this look so much better, but I decided to see just what comes straight from the Dragon, mistakes included. And I am impressed with the colors out of the box. Dragon is a great camera, despite shooting with one of the cheapest lenses you can find. Second, again remember this lens is not as sharp as a proper cine lens (our Canon K35s look amazing on the Dragon, btw!), and, on top of that, it's a pain in the butt to focus.

The Industar covers 6K FF, but I shot 5K for convenience. A mixture of ISOs (800 mainly, with some 250, 400 and 640 thrown in there), really run-and-gun.

Best viewed on VIMEO in FULL SCREEN.

A few compressed JPEGs below, and I will try to upload a few R3Ds if anybody asks.

Thanks!

+1

thanks George I'm going to try this on my camera…looks great!

These are the typical examples that I love.
Get the camera run and gun in the palm of your hand and shoot.
Red did a crazy job, it's amazing the beauty of the images of this sensor, I never get tired of looking at and relate to the subtlety of the images you can capture.

George thanks for these samples.

I said a long time ago (back during the Epic X days '-) that a RED camera was so good it could make an inexpensive lens look great.

These photos have surely proved my point, but imagine what could be achieved with lowest compression via mini-mag media and ADD. Sharpness could improve greatly without having to add artificially.

By the way, nice skin tones on those flowers. '-)

Heh. I have that lens. Looks decent to me. You can never go wrong with cheap glass that's fun to experiment with.

I saw your pinhole lens thread to George. Give the Loreo Lens-in-a-Cap a try. It's a 35mm meniscus lens that goes from f/5.6-f/64 which provides a similar pinhole feel with a little bit of creative control.

Thanks for the video George. Lens, camera and selection of unadjusted real-life shots all looked good to me.

I will try to fix those JPEG links below the low previews, for some reason Photobucket changed them from the original size to the preview size in the last couple of hours. They worked fine, not anymore.

George I have a box of M42's here if you wanna borrow some!

Thanks Nick!

Interestingly enough, only a couple of M42 lenses work with a PL Mount adapter - the vast majority don't have enough clearance to fit. One of them that does fit is this Industar, because it's so small.
The rest, you can invert the M42 to PL mount adapter and use them in macro mode.

Speaking of which, this Industar 50-2 F3.5 lens is also a great little macro lens. I shot some food for fun with the Epic-X a while ago:
