  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That looks cool. What l like with monstro is one, it looks smashing right out of camera. Then also when starting to pull the colors around its simply way more elastict then the others. The image is possible to twist in all kinds of ways and it simply breaks way later.

Yeah, man, it's so massageable you can do it til the cows come home. Scary shit!

Yup. Gemini at ISO 500 is nuts.

Here's no grain:

Looks fantastic. Would love to see some Gemini footage :)

I can't afford to jump all the way to Monstro right now so by the looks of it Gemini is the best thing in terms of color and DR. The 8K on the helium though keeps calling me...such a tough decision!

Helium and a speedmount will almost give you 1 stop of light more and a lot more resolution. 7k de-bayer to 4k will give you a better picture than 5k de-bayer to 4k (also take the OLPF in to consideration, this one will also lower your resolution).

I would not be too sure I would like speedboosted helium better than gemini. The lenses that is fit for boosting are a stop slower to start with.

Take the zeiss supreme and masterprimes as an example they are f1.5 as they are FF where as the masterprimes are f1.2 as they are s35. So to gain the extra speed you need to start with a slower lens.

Also the quality per pxel matters gemini to me looks a lot better in that regard.

So to me what you sugest is very much depending on what lenses you got at hand and what kind of image qualites you prefere. As I see it, especially if mastering at 4k, not shoting 8k stills or such, pixel count is far from everything.

Luigi,

Here is my interpretation of your video clip. The flare up at around the end of the video clip surprised me. I started to edit it out completely but I imagined that was the way you wanted to keep it. I didn't control or manage the flare up in any way. There was a "Media Error" Red sign that appeared midways in the clip so I had to improvise by adding a very short crossfade, you'll notice it when you see it. it kind of adds to the video or at least I think so. I hope you like the color grade.

Not a fan of the speedmount and I am more concerned with color rendition and skin tones, I am waiting for a good comparison test. I might just have to do it myself....

I have not tested Gemini my self but form looking at others r3d´s I find it much better in a monstro kind of way than Helium. Helium´s win is the high resolution on a small sensor and in a controlled enviorment it´s great. But when signal colors get a bit strong those out of gamout colors sticks out on helium in a bad way wich I see less of on Gemini and least of on monstro. Again dont have them side by side to test so no firm science behind it but thats my gut feel.

From the limited clips that I have seen that is my feeling as well. My feeling is I prefer how the Gemini looks over the Helium, I also love the detail you get in the shadows.

That might all be true but it is also true that you can't get a 4k RGB output of a 5k bayer sensor.
But who cares, lots of upscaled Alexa Mini is also sold as 4k RGB and people love it.

You can try it for yourself. Try to find a 12k Hasselblad H6D-100c still downscale it to 8k RGB and you have a very good picture.
Downscale the same still to 2k RGB and upscale it with the best algorithm you can find back to 8k RGB and compare it with the above mentioned out come.

SOo Nice Rand, thanks ;) this is one image of videoclip ;)

Ok Guys tomorrow arrive a Sony Venice with the first firmware 2.0 Beta with dual iso enable and 6k recording.
I make a test on xyla for the DR and post them here. If you have requests I only have 2 days of testing in the limit of what I can do for you. ;)

Nice Luigi. Thanks for all the tests.
Would be nice to see daylight tests Gemini and Venice...besides the LL modes..
Also If you could add the helium against Venice and Gemini would be nice.. tnkss

Downloaded Luigi's zipped file but couldn't get it to open.

Thanks Rand for the tips on how to isolate and change colours in Resolve, tried it out on the life-vest in the picture above.

What's Up Les!!!

I hadn't heard from you in a while, you've probably just been in different threads than I have lately. Les, I can't take any credit for any skills you have in resolve you don't need any help from me on grading, your grades have been looking quite nice.

For those scenes above, I tried, as always, different approaches. I tried Redcine, Resolve, and 3DLUT Creator and different combinations of the three. I learned what works and what doesn't. The best way I have found to do this is to push each program to failure and take note of which program failed first and with what type of scene. I love all three for different reasons.

Here is a one .RMD file from Redcine-X Pro for all four scenes. The images were all cropped in Redcine-X Pro to a 1.9:1 Aspect Ratio at a 6771 x 3563 Resolution. Play with it see how you can make it better see what I got right and what I fucked up.
