  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm running Smoke on Mac and need to run the older driver and firmware cause Smoke doesn't support the new drives.

When I go to downgrade I can install the old driver but the firmware will not install as it says "Could not open card"

Anyone know how to get the older driver and firmware working

I haven't touched the card so would be surprised to find if the card moved the switches while being in my Mac Pro

Hey Paul, why do you think I should change the DIP switches?

Seems a pain to have to pull out the Mac Pro and remove the card to play with the switches when I just want the card to work as advertised :-)

DIP switches don't need to be touched if you have been able to upgrade the firmware in the past. You may need to install the old firmware from the current driver, then roll back to the old driver. I'm not sure, it may not work that way either. Give that a try, if not then probably contact Deanan at red...

Yeah I have been able to upgrade then downgrade in the past but now its not working.
I find it weird that I'm now being told to move the DIP switches.

RED Rocket seems like a great unknown with no one really knowing what is going on.
Crazy for a $4700 PC card :-(

How are you downgrading? Are you doing the firmware first and then the driver or vice versa?

Hey Deanan

I've been trying with installing the Driver then the Firmware in that order.

Cheers
Rory

Rory: first of all make sure you're always using the driver & firmware from the same installer package, it can be easy to accidentally mix them up which makes things a lot harder.

To downgrade from the latest and greatest to an earlier version:

1) extract the earlier installer package and run the driver installer in that package (mac) or force install custom driver (win)

2) shutdown the machine and then power it back on

3) go to the folder you extracted the earlier installer package to and now run the firmware installer from that

4) shutdown the machine and then power it back on

5) you should be running the old version of everything at this point

I have done the above procedure many times myself as I was testing new releases of the drivers / firmware internally and then needed to downgrade. I've never had a problem with it.

Thanks Rob.
I've done it in the procedure many times too but for some reason it wouldn't do it for me.

I've actually done a clean system reinstall, a pain but its done. And it seems to have solved the problem of being able to downgrade the RR.

Now just have to test it with Smoke and see if it will work

Sorry to hear about your troubles Rory. It's not making any sense since I've done it countless times myself.

If you have any future problems with this, please shoot me an email!

thanks Rob, yeah it should have just work but I guess with the clean system install and now with it working it must have been something else that was causing the issue on my system.

cheers

Hey Hans
I was unable to get Smoke to work with the RR.
All sounds nice on paper but actual practice it doesn't work.
Bummer as it would be a nice combo.

Hi Rory,

Thanks for your insights!

I've been testing Premier Pro's ability to work natively with R3Ds files. Although you don't have RT full debayer (no RR support in the moment) you can work very well with the R3Ds in the timeline.

There are many BUTs that arise with such a workflow.

1. You can easily change debayer settings to your likings. If you need a consistent workflow between multiple seats this is a problem.

2. Camera crews make mistakes. Often it's necessary to change the debayer settings later. Again it's hard to communicate that through different seats.

3. Debayering eats processing power. To my understanding RR does the debayering in full and RT but some transcoding has to be done by the processors when spitting out files is the goal. I'm dead sure that RT full debayering with RR won't lead to RT playback in Smoke.

4. While Smoke can do a lot, I don't find it's colour correcting tools made for creative grading. IMHO, you need a digital telecine anyway before your feed Smoke with footage.

I think that the usage of RR with Smoke is/could working well with wiretap central to create in a quick way DPX files for a later conform in Smoke.
