  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Slightly Saddened About today's Announcement

Agreed...... The trade in should be a trade in.

I just ordered a RED ONE last week, and now this announcement? I REALLY want the 3K 120 fps, and if I need a scarlet for that shouldn't I be able to trade this thing in for one?

Akube,

I love you man...But;

If you have so much money why are you bitching?
Stop whineing & start dining!
Now is the time to celebrate...

Its all good.

DogDay.

bitching cause i want to make what Is already super duper awesome into something that is so... well.. perfect...

right now..

it looks like a beautifull marble ball.. so clear.. lustrous, shiny... but there's that little spot right there... if brushed off.. it could look way more.. well .. awesome-r

Nice metaphor...Point made...Valid.

However;

There is a saying... "Don`t look a Gift Horse in the mouth"

I don`t really know what it means exactly ( :Though I know its not about Dentistry: )

DogDay.

Find a buyer for an Epic S35, trade-in your Red One for it, sell the Epic to your buyer, buy 3 or 4 Scarlet S35 with the money you made from the sale. Et voilà! :)

Seriously though, for me the question is more: what makes Epic S35 worth 4 times more than Scarlet S35? Is it "just" higher fps and more redcode options, or is there more than these specs? It's a huge difference from $7000 to $28000 so I'm thinking we might not have all the elements yet. :)

Today's release wasn't exactly kept a secret...

Well, looks it's just a written words... The red is present and for now, only present will give the possibility to shoot something and get your job done, no isn'it?

i haven't a red yet but i still plan to get one if i could exchange it the 17 500 for a scarlet S35 or FF35 wih accessory. If Red is telling me i will be able and give me a written paper :) , well next month i'm spending my cash!

So Red if your listening, what about this upgrade program? I could think about losing in one year a couple of thousand dollar in my R1, but with my budget and just my need, i can't really think to upgrade to a Epic body. Could you tell us a little more please? i have to take my decision in the next weeks....

Thanks

you made a very interesting and productive point. Though how could we get in touch with them buyers.. I guess ppl interested in buying epics would look for redone owners anyway to get a deal.. there is truly a lot that is hidden and not yet spoken of.. and like Jim stated.. things could drastically change.

I bet a lot of people are interested in getting a 9k epic,, I for one.. is definately going to get one. Makes me wonder if I can trade in my two reds for 1 9k Epic. lol. This whole trade-in business has got us by the balls.

But seriously... the trade-in has to be perfected... as the current line-up when on streets will truly have the redone become way cheap. I can definately see a redone go for $3.5k or $4k when the $7k scarlet is released. That's a massive depreciation for a two years time.

I am a working Director/Dop shooting high end commercials . I have received both my camera's now and am pleased and really enjoying the images I am creating and will probably be moving a percentage of my work from 35mm to Red depending what is needed for any particular job.
But I do not understand why some individuals are moaning about the latest developments from Red. They should spend more time shooting and creating than wheeling and dealing, do you ever actually shoot with your camera's.

Akube,

You are wrong about the pricing. Remember the RED One was $17,500.. Or was it? What did you REALLY pay? The same will be with these cameras. We know the price of the brains, but what is the price of:

Wireless control board?
IO Module?
New Battery Compartment?
Plate and riser
Rod Connectors
etc.

Also, remember I can saftly say we're looking at a time frame of AT LEAST A YEAR before this stuff starts rolling out.. What's a 2 year old RED One worth by then? Yet you will get the price you paid for it.. There's considerable value in that.

I think you want to think this through a bit more

Jay

It is about a year away dont be sad sell your camera now today and wait for the close to as good camera.

Maybe a year away maybe longer???

no need to be "Sad" just sell your camera today if your unhappy.

Surely youve gotten value out of the R1

Sell it and sit on it.

That's exactly what I would like to know...

Because some people buy the RED ONE so they can pretend they are filmmakers and directors.

And what saddens me is scarlet...

Hi Akube,

Always enjoy reading your posts --occasionally you even manage to post stories in a few lines-- and can easily understand the tone and what you are saying.

Although I'm not thinking of the exchange program, what puzzles me is that I would like to have a much lighter 4K, 120fps, > 11-13 stops of dynamics camera but such an option is not available. Updating to Epic from Red One cost perhaps more per kilogram than gold so it's not that tempting.

The option I really would like the most is completely missing from the list. Of course, for understandable reasons, but we'll see. Specs were supposed to change and we were told to count on it.

I feel the same way too regarding framerates. i was looking for 13+ stops especially in the highlights... and by that I mean recovering whites... not so much in the blacks. I'd really like the extra stops to recover the highlights and the whites more than in the blacks. A little less compressed 4K stream .. a redcode 98 setting.. FF35 is a +, to be small and light enough to fit two cameras for the total size and weight of a single redone for 3d photography.

the baseline epic is not tempting a single bit to me. It is the FF35 and the Medium format epic that make sense.

I, too, would like an "upgrade" path to a S35 scarlet, beyond a slight discount, as since I'm not a pro shooter--when I get it--I really have no use for my Red One.

If I could get say, a Brain, CF, smart Handle or Red Remote and Breakout box (essentially a Red One+) for a swap, or even $xK+my Red one-- I would do it--even if, in the end of the day, it's way less than the $17K I paid for it or "less Value" than the 17.5 K swap for an Epic--I would be extremily happy.

In the spring, the value of the Red One will be judged in comparison with the equivilent current camera body--the Scarlet S35. it will be judged inferior to it as it can't connect to the new remotes, handles, and other new modular systems and it is 4K vs 5K. Even if the breakout box is $2K and the Handle is $2K the value so it would seem the "equivelent" of a Red One is $11K, because of the short comings, I'm afraid the Red One to the market will be more like $6K or Less.

To me, Scarlet and Epic, truely will "render obsolence obsolete" and have the upgrade path the Red One strived for but from the looks of it--didn't achieve.

Please, Jim, help us early adopters get into a lower end modular system with less pain--in the end--it will drive the sale of a lot more modules.

It must be the internals of the Epic that are much more costly. Going from REDCODE 42mb/s in the Scarlet to REDCODE 225mb/s is a very large bandwidth jump, hence the larger body of the Epic brain.

If you consider that most SATA hard drives have an average write speed of 78mb/s for a spinning disk, it must cost a lot for the high bandwidth internals in the Epic.

The bigger problem is finding a cost efficient recording method that can write data at 225mb/s. The Dalsa has to be tethered to a Codex Digital Recorder to get bandwidth that high recorded.
