Just thought I'd share a short I did last year. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a Red for the shoot, so this is all 720p from and HVX. Figured it'd be cool to show you guys anyway. They just finished all the post work last week, it was great to see how it all came together.

The film is basically a "sequel" to Alice in Wonderland, where she wakes back up in the forest with a bump on her head. She struggles to figure out if Wonderland was real or not while she goes through therapy in a psychiatric ward. The characters from Wonderland are appearing in random places, trying to get her to come back. The director wanted the characters to look like they were pulled straight out of a storybook, so the animation has a really interesting feel to it.

Here are some grabs...

If you would like to watch the whole film, please PM me asap and I'll hook you up...

Thanks for looking!!

Hi Jonathan,

Despite months of viewing the Red forum, I actually finally just now registered to simply compliment you on your short film. Superb work. I really liked the beautiful shots near the water. I also enjoyed that within the 11 minutes I was brought into a different world. One that is torn apart psychologically.

On the hallway shots with the Cheshire cat, was this shot on green screen by chance? Because whenever I view these my mind keeps imagining that something does not sit quite perfectly. I'm probably completely wrong and, it might just have to do with the focus and lighting.

The animation was a nice touch and done well for what seemed to be likely animated in After Effects. It would be really nice though to have more fluid animations. For example the characters limbs move on pivot points instead of flowing together. I think that animation the "old fashioned way" /cell shaded animation would compliment your short film. Being that your characters are dressed to be in an older time and this does not take place in a present day atmosphere.

Once again excellent job. Very well thought out concept which, is immediately recognizable to people of all ages. I would love to see more. Also by chance what is the Down the Rabbit Hole typeface please? I'm just beginning to start recognizing fonts by sight and this one intrigues me.

Blake,

Thanks a lot for your response, I really appreciate your comments.

- The scene in the hallway was not greenscreen. The compositing could have probably come together a little better. This was the director's first shot at compositing in After Effects- good call on that by the way. All of the animations were done there with pivot points just like you described.

I will pass along the suggestion for cell animation. I have a feeling the director would have loved to do it that way and had already considered it, but we didn't have the time or resources to do so.

Thanks again for your kind words!

PS- If I could pull off green screen that looked that good with an HVX, I would die a happy man...

Jonathan,

You are very welcome.

It would really be worth the effort or money for nice traditional cell animations. I'm actually half tempted to start drawing them myself :P

I really would like to see more, the crawl into the rabbit hole is such a cliffhanger. Great work.

Hmmmm.... I'll pass that along. I have a feeling you're very right and it'd be worth the effort.

Thanx for the link Jon!
I thought it was a great short...although I have to agree with (blake) regarding cells for animation...they might have worked a bit better in this case.
BUT.... you also do what you can with what you have in regards to budget, and from what I can see, what you did with it was great!
Im looking forward to seeing more from you!
Cheers!
