Dove "Real Beauty Sketches" Shot on Red One MX

@LaylaB

We needed a ton of fill with the open windows and changing sun path all day long and we shot for two days or three days - I can't remember - we only had a joker 800 hmi with a octobank on it primarily as the key light (we had so little time to readjust lighting) and I wish we had a 4k hmi or even a 1.2k hmi, the windows would have been more properly exposed - the roll off into the over exposure is a little unnerving on the Red One MX (until the Red One Dragon comes out :) . It was a super small shoot budget and skeleton crew - we had to make due with what we had and go with it.

Also the 4k hmi would have been a bigger beast for what we had to do - rolling it around from the women to the sketch artist - it would have been pretty clunky and I don't even know if we could have found an octobank that would work on a 4k - I don't think I know of one - we didn't have time to have a 4k hmi on a stand then some silk in front of it on a stand that was rolling or a space for it -

It's always stressful being on set dependent on natural light for such a long time, especially two or three days and trying to make the film feel like it was done in one day, and to boot with a super small crew - the lighting had to be super simple to work - because we filmed a lot of women - it was packed days.

In the end if I could do it again I would have probably used a camera like a Red DRAGON (if I had it :) or similar that had a smoother highlight roll off or more stops of dynamic range to handle the exposure. But of course overall I was super happy with how the Red One performed handheld and with the image quality from the camera and I was using the tools I had available to me and with the budget constraints, I just made what I had work as best as I could.

Also I love the parody video shot with men.
