  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone used the new Double Data Software that replaces R3D Data Manager? I am downloading a trial version as I write. Apparently it addresses some of the copy speed issues of the original?
 
I have only managed to use it on one job and transfer speed looked good. On my Retina MacBook Pro 15" I was getting about 115MB transfer speed copying via the Finder and with Data Doubler. So no slow down although there is an extra (short) time with Data Doubler where it I assume it is doing its verification? The programme did hang up a few times which is not good so had to restart. This is not so good but need to dedicate some time to it to reliably check it out but it seems to be on the right track
 
Ive still not had the downtime to check it out, so have still been using RDM and ADM on commercial jobs. Im sure its just as rock solid though. Yes, it will likely take longer than a finder copy because it is using checksum verification. People may not feel the need for doing so, but believe me, keeping the copy logs has got more than one angry producer off my back when a post house tries to blame me for lost material!
 
I've tried using it with R3D footage, but it hangs fairly often at around 50% on Mac OSX Lion. I've tried it on 3 different macs with the same results. My DIT also found that it was significantly slower copying and verifying Alexa files compared to Shotput Pro, which is the exact opposite when comparing R3D Data Manager and Shotput Pro. Sticking to R3D Data Manager until I get a chance to resolve this with NightSky.
 
I've had the exact same problem as Russell. about 1/2 to 3/4 through the percentage doesn't progress and the ETA actually consistently becomes longer. have messaged Night Sky and it seems like it may be a common problem so hopefully there is a resolution.
 
what about opensource tools like freefilesync. It provides both the sync/backup/mirror options as well as a compare in which it does a binary level file comparison. And it come in OSX Windows & Linux flavors.

I experienced this, but only when I had 'Verify in Pairs' enabled. My thought is that the multithreading was the issue because I wasn't using a RAID and the stall happened after the halfway point in the process (based on the original ETA). Since the checksum verification happens after the data copy this would make sense.
 
Double Data is faster than R3DM, but occasionally hangs, after transferring files, while its doing a verification. Happens when using pairs of drives or Raid5 tower.
 
I only used Double Data once, and found it to be slower than R3DDM. But I think that's because my /2 destination drives were fairly slow. If the primary destination is very fast, I think that's when you'll start to see a speed improvement over R3DDM.
At the time, I had a couple complaints, and I'm not sure if they've been resolved or not:
.profile files are not copied
OS X .Spotlight-V100 files are copied, which clutters the log
 
I'm trying out this software again on a shoot this weekend, and having major problems. I've reported them to the developer, so hopefully they can get resolved quickly. In the meantime, I'm still using R3DDM.
 
Yup, same problems here. DD has crashed on average about once a day for me. Data Manager on the other hand has only crashed a handful of times in the many years I've been using it. I'm just not willing to use a program that crashes that often, so I'm sorry to say it, but I'm still working with Data Manager. Also I found that Double Data's "Project Info" was a major step backwards from Data Manager. Some fields don't seem to be persistent across multiple downloads. Also why the hell can't it automatically detect the media ID? I know the cards have serial numbers and it's all in the metadata. This can't possibly be that hard! And I have to hit the little plus? I can't drag it over from the desktop! Arrrgh. *end rant*
 
I have tested DD on multiple machines and found it significantly slower (read unusable on set) when compared to R3D DM. I have also had no response from emails sent via the website and software to try and help figure out why this is the case. A total waste of money. In my opinion R3D DM is still the best verified back up app out there for RED, so it is really surprising that DD is such a flop.
 
has it improved at all guys? my DP is insisting I use it for check sums for an upcoming alexa job...i don't mind doing so but the above reviews got me a little uneasy...
 
My own experience using Double Data on Alexa shoots never had an issue. Sure, the interface could have been designed better, but never lost a bit of data.

Cannot testify to the speed reports as I never used the older program.
 
Solid for me since the latest release. Use it exclusively now. Experience with R3D files.

FWIW - I have used it for quite a while and never had a problem. Switched from R3D DM not too long after it was introduced. Older MB Pro running latest OS (currently on Mavericks).
