Hi all,

Here in the UK, Doritos (A corn snack kinda like nachos) ran a competition for people to come up with and shoot a 29 second advert for them, from the ads they've received five will go onto a public vote and they are chosen by a team of judges according to the ratings on youtube and other factors.

I decided to have a go for a laugh, shooting on Red, and roped in three friends to star in it (None of whom had ever been involved in shooting anything before!).

On the day we shot for about 4 hours and it was hot, dry and v exhausting, the location was treacherous to say the least. Trying to get your friends out of the house early on a Saturday morning after beers on the friday night or put down the impromptu barbecued food that cropped up in the middle of the day meant we didn't have much time!!! The budget was just over £50 ($100), so don't go expecting any masterpieces! :) That budget covered buying the music, props and costumes. I did the edit in three evenings during the week after work and graded on the saturday.

I was the entire crew from director down to runner, and I was bloody knackered for it!!! It was a lot of fun though, beers, bbq's and shooting Red are a great combination! Everyone here should try it! (I only wish the weather allowed for bbq's more often here in the UK!)

Anyway hope you like it. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMsoV9wdAW0, click on the "Watch in High Quality" link to see a slightly better albeit still youtubified version. Cheers!

Commercial*

:)

Paul,

Great!!! Kudos to the one-man show... I love the concept, and the ending is priceless.

Hey Paul,

Great job, love it!

Could certainly pass for a "real one." Just goes to show that whether you have £50 or $100,000, it's all about the idea and the talent.

When people ask why I want to buy a camera instead of rent, this is exactly the reason. Control.

I gotta agree Jim, shooting with the camera run and gun is great fun. It's not easy and the results aren't ever going to be as good as a dedicated team or professionals shooting but you can still come up with stuff that's not half bad and the amount you can do in post helps too.

Zak, I was debating with the guys when we shot it what a western shot in the UK would actually be? Spaghetti western stemming from the italian origins of such films of course... Fish and Chip Western? :)

Cheers for the comments folks!

Paul

I smell winner!!! well done sir.

People underestimate the power of no money...

Nice what lenses?
Hi Norm, I used a couple of Zeiss standards 20 and 50 I think. Possibly used an 85 on one or two shots but genuinely can't recall, it was all a mad rush.

The best thing we used though, was a bag of flour for dust in some shots and for the gun smoke at the end, 30 pence and it worked a charm. :)

Terrific job! Much better than the winning Super Bowl ad when they did the contest in the states. Heck, it's better than any Doritos commercial I've seen lately. Bravo!

excellent, I would have thought it's a true one if I didn't know you did it. The only thing you could add would be the strong commercial voice on the slogan. I guess you'll win the competition with this clip.
