  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does the new FCP actually debayer R3D files automatically?

Or do we still have to do the debayering through some other exterior program?

Thanks.

Stephen

System Prefs>RedCode

Either Half High, Half Standard, or Auto. Your choice.

Thanks very much for the information?

Which yields the best image?

Is there no "full debayer" option?

Thanks.

Stephen

Isn't it true, however, that even though it's debayered, by not doing a 1-light (in Rocket Cine X for example) you are severely limiting your grading options?

I always correct my footage before exporting so at least I'm in the ballpark and don't have to push the QuickTimes.

And if you are only using it for offline, does it matter whether it's debayered anyway?

It will be interesting when FCP can utilize the Red Rocket.

I am confused about this as well...? If you are cutting with proxies and sending to Color...where is the debayer? In Color?

@Jochen Kunstler
FULL debayer doesn't necessarily mean that you're working in 4k resolution. . . Debayer has to do with how many coefficients are read from the wavelet, and is resolution independent (you can have Full Debayer 720p QT's, for example). . .

FCP will NEVER support the Red Rocket. The Red Rocket simply allows for Full Debayer in Real time. The Way FCP works is that it wraps everything you put into it in a Quicktime Wrapper. ProRes is designed to be the most compatible with FCP.

So, the best way to work in FCP for an ONLINE in my opinion, if you're going to correct in Color, is to use RedRushes to create CameraRGB/REDlog Pro-Res 4444 Quicktimes with a FULL debayer, cut picture, then send to Color (or export EDL for Scratch/Pablo).

FCP's Debayer (and Log&Transfer Debayer) is not nearly as 'nice' as the first party Programs (even though all of the use the RED SDK), as well as not being able to do a FULL debayer.

So. . . Use the Red Programs. .. that's what they're THERE for.

They have gone on record as saying they will with a QT component yet to come, as well as an updated Log & Transfer plug that will use the Rocket for xcoding to ProRes.

I've never read or heard such a statement. Can you point me to it?

What is your thinking behind CameraRGB/REDlog?

If you create a look in Red Alert and save the preset, You can go in the drop down in the log and transfer plugin and the presets will be there. I only messed with it a little, then we got the Rocket, so haven't since.

I have found this route to be quite buggy and only 50% reliable, you're better off reconforming through Color, the Clipfinder route, or Scratch/Pablo if money is no object. The last RedCine that Lucas/Assimilate released does pretty good batch jobs and RedRushes is fairly efficient as well. Just my .02.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the plug, but wanted to jump in for a second.

There is a Big (with a capital "B") difference in cost between SCRATCH and Pablo.

A turnkey Rocket Fuel system with a RED Rocket card, 3800SDI, SCRATCH-CINE, and the computer/monitor to go along with it can be purchased for under US$15,000. With that system, you have (in REDCINE-speak) full rez-high debayer/demosaic with output to any SMPTE format in realtime. Render to DPX in realtime. Render to Quicktime and other formats as fast as Quicktime will allow.

With a Pablo, just the Neo color correction panel is over $100K.

I am not saying anything about Pablo's capabilities - it is an incredibly powerful system. But the price disparity is huge.

Best,

Lucas

Not really. I can't bear to dig through 20 pages of the rubble that is RedRocket thread.

You're informally confirming what I'm saying. I don't think there has ever been such a statement made by either Red or Apple (in fact, I'm sure there has never been any statement regarding Rocket support from Apple).

What is your thinking behind CameraRGB/REDlog?

I think it would make sense to use these settings if you were going to have these new QTs as your masters to eventually color, but not if your going back to your Raw.

Also,
@Jochen Kunstler
Pro-Res 4444 Quicktimes with a FULL debayer, cut picture, then send to Color (or export EDL for Scratch/Pablo).

If you are going to be cutting in 720P or even 1080 in FCP, to eventually go back to your R3Ds, it will add a huge amount of time to render from rushes at Full Debayer vs's half standard which will be fine for your offline.

This may be what Nate was referring to: (Page 2, on RED Rocket update...

The Quicktime component for R3Ds will support RED Rocket™ also. Any app that uses the REDcode QTs will also get accelerated (including FCP).

That was stated by Deanan. It was stated over 6 months ago. I have yet to see any confirmation from anyone at Apple regarding such support. I'm not saying it won't happen. I'm saying there's been no evidence of it happening up to this point.
