  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do you have an Internet connection on your Workstation ?

Hi everybody,

For many years, I've had no internet connection on my workstation.
Or should I say, not on the main boot. I've always had a multi boot with Windows.

On C: only the software I need for editing and compositing. Very clean and stable.
On D: my internet connection with an anti-virus, browser, word processor, spreadsheet... well, you get the idea.

But it's getting more and more difficult not having an Internet access on my main "Workstation" boot.
Every software needs updates now and then. Looking for tutorials while working is very useful too...

A few years back nobody would want an internet access on their workstation being afraid of getting an instable system.
So, how do you guys do ?

If you have a PC, does the anti-virus update interfere with your editing software or is it seamless ?
If you're on Mac, you obviously don't bother with an anti-virus, but still, do you have an internet connection on the main boot ?

Thanks. :-)

Thanks guys.

Any PC user with the same experience ? :-)

Thanks Mathieu.

Hope I'm not the only PC user around here... :-)

I don't have the luxury of multiple machines, so my workstation is my primary surfer. I thought about creating an account only for working, and one for everything else (to minimize distraction), but those render times need to be spent on something or my head might explode...

Are you on Mac or PC Austin ?

No web on our PC based wrkstations, no antivirus or anything else just clean system. Only local LAN and strict regulation. When we got problem we only solve one or two thing and not tons of others. Even updates can case serious problems so its good to test them somwhere else.
There is no time to look for other aplication if they are in conflict or not etc. We got plenty of PC/Mac machines around for all that net mess.

But there was once problem with infected USB flash stick.

All my PC workstations and render nodes are isolated to their own LAN with no physical connection possible to the outside world. I have one Mac Pro in the same situation. All my other Macs and Linux stations get connectivity as they don't have the issues. I'm tired of chasing worms, virii, malware, etc.. on Windows systems. You can install all the antivirus, anti-malware and anti-spyware software you want, it just clogs up your systems and interferes with everything else, while providing piss-poor protection, assuming it works at all. Eventually something works its way in.

We had a brief reprieve from it with 64bit Windows for a while, but there's a full onslaught now and the anti-virus companies can't keep up.

The big thing I fear is that Apple and MacOS may soon be targeted just as much. I know it's targeted now, I've seen spyware and malware on OSX -- a lot on systems that are still running Tiger. It seems to have surged when Apple shifted over to Intel CPUs, but so far OSX has held pretty secure and Apple's security updates appear to be doing the job.

I pretty much hate surfing the web on Windows, especially with IE. Everywhere you go, someone is always trying to install an ActiveX control or modify something via JavaScript and you have to always say no, or trust that your browser is always set to properly say no. And then there's still ways around that, or it seems the malware and spyware creators find new holes faster than Microsoft can patch them.

Always Online. (Windows 7 and mostly Chrome).

I couldn't function without internet access. I'm constantly on Nuke and Brazil's IRC channels, The studio's AIM group, Outlook, CGTalk, Google Images, software updates, Maxscripts, python reference, Bing images, wikipedia, FTP Uploads, Wolfram Alpha...

The brain is far too small of a place to hold all the knowledge you need in a day. I've outsourced a good portion of my memory to the internet haha.

This pretty much describes my one PC Workstation. If I need to download an update for software, I do it on another machine and then update using a USB stick dedicated to that one purpose.

Anyone use this time to work on guitar licks? I'm toying with the idea of quitting editing and going on tour .....

Two workstations on unattended win7 64bits.

One highend 2x6cores and one average i7.
The highend is connected when needed, the other one is always connected without an issue, ever.

I don't visit dangerous website, and I take care of every foreign flashdrive I plug in, it take 20 seconds.

Stefan,

I can't say for sure how smart we are, but . . .

We run with internet connection on production machines for the updates from Adobe and others, Microsoft updates we have some issues with.

We do run Virus and malware protection on a daily schedule - during lunch hour.

We also pray alot and use non-production (old production machines) to surf the web and post to User Boards like RedUser. We DO NOT have e-mail (Outlook) on production machines.

So far God has protected all machines.

A workstation is for work. The macbook pro next to it is for surfing the web, opening support documents, email, etc...

Has anyone heard if it is possible to run a Virtual Machine for internet access to protect the host, or vise versa?
