I went to the Cinegear Expo at Paramount Studios here in Hollywood this Saturday, and was very impressed by the sheer quantity of film equipment and number of people attending, but what most amazed me was that RED had no booth, ads or other representation, yet probably (at a conservative estimate) ONE QUARTER of the cameras there being used to demonstrate film-related gear were RED ONE cameras!

This must be driving the "big" camera manufacturers insane!

In other words, the RED camera seems to be the camera to use to "legitimize" peripheral equipment.

Congratulations RED... the only problem I have with you guys is that you don't make products fast enough for me to buy.

It must also get up the nose of publications, trade journals and print advertising agencies that Red does not do much, if any, print advertising while most of the competition continue to carpet-bomb the advertising landscape. Red's viral 'word-of-mouth' approach leaves it with more money to spend on R&D and keeping camera prices down, which is a win for us camera buyers. We take a similar approach, particularly with print advertising - 'word-of-mouth' referrals are our best source of work.

The Red One is cheaper to own and rental, so why bother with the rental and insurance of a 150K+ film oder hdtv camera?

There are lots of new RED cameras out there so that's what companies are making accessories for. There are lots of RED One cameras out there not particularly shooting anything at the moment so it is relatively easy to get one to stick in a show booth. A few years back at NAB it seemed like every third booth had a Canon XL-H1 in it? Did that make this the most popular camera of the moment? No, it was just the least expensive device available with an HD-SDI output.

I think this is quite different Mitch, and it would be a good idea to give credit where credit is due. The Canon XL-H1 did not drive the industry or accomplish the sheer amount of projects that RED is doing.

Accessory companies are out in force because they feel they can make a buck on Red.....no other reason makes sense to me.
It's also cheaper to get a dozen Reds than other 35mm digital camera particularly as the market is flooded with them round LA.
As for the amount of Red v Canon v Panasonic projects...no comment?

The cynic in me would say 1/4 of them were REDs in order to pick up the underequipped and over funded explosion in new potential customers.

Panavision doesn't exactly need to go to Cinegear to get a manufacturer to show them their wares. People such as myself however are far more likely to need to 'shop around'.

Whenever I read any news like this... I realise that the smile I get is the same smile a person gets when the football team they support has a win... This is like our team...and play each week against arri and PV and sony and everyone else... and we're all rooting Red on.

gimme an "R"!!!

Our PBS documentary, (400 Years of the Telescope) which was shot on RED, was screened at the Cine Gear Film Expo Friday...we were honored to be chosen, although we didn't win any prizes - i wish we could have stayed for the Expo, i bet it was fun! :)

So, what new RED-friendly gear was shown? Anything interesting?

Sorry, I don't own a RED, but I'm one of the "rooters"...so I don't know what was particularly of value as peripherals go. I did see several dual REDs set up to shoot 3D, using a configuration of mirrors, with the cameras at 90 degrees to one another.

The RED was the most recognizable camera, though. I don't think overall there were as many of any individual brand in booths as REDs.

And if you're not actually shooting those two days, who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to bring along his camera and continue the seditious revolution by participating at a booth? Right in the face of the enemy!
