I guess I've kind of lucked out for a change because I haven't had problems with 7.4 and FCP. Also, I've finally been able to make red cine work..go figure.

The QuickTime 7.4.1 update unfortunately does *NOT* fix the RED camera generated files problem!

The QuickTime 7.4.1 update unfortunately does *NOT* fix the RED camera generated files problem!

I have noticed that in the last few updates to Quicktime, the Image Compression Manager (ICM) calls some different sequence of functions and has resulted in the breaking of several codec components.

For .e.g, the "EncodeFrame" function call that was introduced in QT 7.0, was suddenly being called solely, where as until recently I remembered seeing the "PreCompress/CompressBand", which appears to have been totally disbanded by the ICM. This has resulted in the breakage of some QT 3rd party components.

It appears Apple has restructured the way ICM is going to call modern vs. legacy functions in QT, and hence, forcing 3rd party components to modernize.

The point being that depending upon the usage of legacy functions it may be the 3rd party components who will have to modernize in order to start working in QT 7.4 onwards, than waiting for Apple to fix something.

I think I might have a clue and hopefully it will help you with the fix.

A friend just bought a laptop and it of course has the latest version of QT so i was expecting it not to work, but to my amazement it worked fine, Audio and all! So the actor who knows nothing about the post process says maybe it is because he does not have QT Pro? and i thought wow, that is the major difference here I have Pro and it did not work but this guy has regular old QT and it works fine!

Could it be when you install FCP and it upgrades you to Pro and installs all these other codecs, this is what breaks the Redcode?

Just wanted to share the info.

Mark

Appologies for this guys... we didn't know this was coming (and would mess things up).

I have identified that it breaks the camera generated movies. If you use RED ALERT to re-generate those files then you can at least keep working (although it might be slower as reported).

We're working with Apple to figure out what's happening!

I am starting editing a feature with red footage, first time i have done this, and I am hitting this obvious problem of quicktime not playing the reference files.

I could pacifist quicktime back to the previous update however I am worried about this affecting other projects i have been working on.

My question is this: aside from the time consumed by an extra step, are there any other complications to using Red Alert to re-generate a H quicktime from the R3d and using this to edit with? - This seems to work and play fine for me.

Thanks for the help
Isaac

Well, we're in hell :) We've install FCP 6 we've installed quicktime 7.3 and each time we're opening a red file, FCP quit !
We've got a blackmagic decklink card and it needs quicktime to be upgraded to 7.4 so we're in deep sh.t ! Maybe that's where the problems come from ? Anybody has any clue ?

I'm about to direct 2 commercials on the RED. Our system is already on QT7.4. Based on this thread it's not supposed to work right? What if I copy the files onto the hard drive and instead of trying to read them in QT I downres them to SD asap? Will I be able to edit the SD footage even with QT7.4?

I don't see it mentioned at BlackMagic's site that you need QT 7.4. We are running our Decklink under QT 7.3 without problems.

Yeah, anyone? It says under DETAILS "enhanced compatibility with third party apps"

I know a particular 3rd party app that I could really use some enhanced compatibility between.

no problem here either, kinda need it to run the new pro-apps update so we swallowed the bullet and are working fine, plus now we have the L&T support into fcp!!

mac pro 2.66 quad core 5gb ram
QT 7.4.5
fcp 6.0.3

7.4.5 with no problems here either (besides the immense cpu load when playing proxies)

Dual Quad Core Mac Pro 3.2 GHz
MacOS 10.5.2 with graphics update
QuickTime 7.4.5
8 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600

Are the issues happening on both Tiger and Leopard?

I took a chance and upgraded to QT 7.4.5 in order to get the Pro Apps update to 6.0.3 and the new Red log & transfer support. No problems so far. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.16 Core 2 Duo running Tiger with 3 GB RAM, connected eSATA to a CalDigit S2VR Duo... working with 2K footage/proxies through L&T ProRes... round-tripped through Crimson Workflow and RedCine just fine. Will be testing DPX to Color in a few weeks. So far so stable.

Try an Application called AppZapper you can get it at macupdate.com or http://www.appzapper.com/

This will KILL your Quicktime.... I would also do a general search for Quicktime and make sure nothing is chilling out before Reinstalling a retro version of QT, if you can find it
