Do not upgrade to QT 7.4

Hey guys, if you, like me downloaded the QT 7.4 upgrade and then got seriously messed over trying to downgrade back to QT 7.3.1, then after you've downloaded QT 7.3.1 stand alone installer from the apple site (link posted somewhere above), you've probably found out that you can't just install it over 7.4, as the mac installer won't let you.

To get around this problem I've used something called Pacifist 2.5.1, you can download it from http://www.charlessoft.com/

It's shareware, the free trial works to install QT 7.3.1, but it's well worth the $20 IMHO.

Yes, this is absolutely a great tool. I posted this on the original QT 7.4 problem thread a couple of days ago here:

Glad it is working for others besides myself. It seems we all must be VERY careful not to update quicktime when prompted upon startup everytime there is a new version.

Perhaps RED can also put on the support page an "approved software version list" for the important apps RED needs to work with, such as QT, OSX, Windows, Final Cut, etc, to help avoid this in the future.

From Stu Maschwitz's website:
"Apparently the new DRM-checking routine will stop your After Effects render after ten minutes because it thinks you're trying to hack your own file. And since Adobe finds out about Quicktime updates the same day you and I do, here we are."

God I hate DRM. I'm am not at all cool with studios and software companies trampling all over legitimate user with presumed guilt. I spent 45 minute and $6 worth of 'download credits' trying to get a single half hour episode of TV to work in a Windows Media Player DRM file - the first two times the authorisation message never made it to the player, but you can be sure my account was debited...

Maybe once RED has the cameras nailed down a little they can set their sights on revolutionising content distribution and rights in a way that doesn't see legitimate users punished repeatedly.

If there's anything that makes me want to pirate movies and TV it's being forced to endure this 'you are a bad person' stuff. I've already downloaded one movie that I legitimately purchased on DVD after the DVD forced me to sit through 2 minutes of unskippable anti-piracy promo stuff and another 3 minutes of trailers. I've also ripped all my son's favourite DVDs to XviD files, because as a two-year old, he gets grumpy sitting through a whole lot of ads for other movies before he can watch The Little Mermaid...

(Rant over)

Well, it's more the idea of Apple releasing Quicktime without either:
1. doing proper QA
2. notifying Adobe and Red and giving them a few days to test their products before releasing to public
or
3. offering an easy "go back to 7.3" option
...which was the problem for me. The "revert to previous version" option would really not be hard to officially implement at all and would be useful in a professional environment.

I guess we'll have to keep on using multiple OS installations and a "rolling install" system forever?

What a pain in the A$$!!! Everything was working fine....then apple gives me/us an upgrade. I really need to be wasting this time :(

An uninstall option from Apple is due!

Hey there. Just hang on and I'll have put together a quick tutorial with pictures on my web server by 3 AM EST (GMT-5).

This seems to have worked for the most part, but try at your own risk. :)

When you open Pacifist, click on the "Open Package" option. From there, select the Quicktime 7.3 Installer file for your particular OS, and then click on the Install button in the toolbar.

Click on the Replace button when prompted so QT 7.3 writes over any old QT 7.4 files.

That should do the trick. I am repeating what I have found on the Apple discussion forums.

One thing I have noticed that still is not working properly after going back to 7.3 is the REDCINE Thumbnails.

Can we please have an update from RED on the status of QT 7.4 compatibility?

Thanks much.

I can confirm this pacifist fix method works and is pretty painless.

Here you go people. A very visual document describing exactly what was just explained... and right on time. :)

Follow the link

If it appears broken, just keep hammering. It might be a DNS problem... the page is hosted live from my closet, but the server is reliable.

I have identified that it breaks the camera generated movies.

It's not just Red stuff Rob. I had a client come back to me last week asking me to re-edit some work I'd done for them last year. I found that some of my original footage (which is only DV) is unreadable by FCP/QT - anything over 2GB, where the clip has been broken down into multiple files.

Normally QT would re-stitch these into a continuous clip, now it reports them as corrupted files and won't play them at all.

Quality update!

QT 7.4 also broke After Effects and other apps.

Yeah, it hosed us royally on two major spots we were putting together in AE 7! The only workaround right now, is to render out your stuff in AE as a targa sequence, and then import that sequence into QT and convert it into a quicktime movie.

My quicktime 7.3.1 for Leopard still crashes when using Red Cine

My quicktime 7.3.1 for Leopard still crashes when using Red Cine

I used the Pacifist and reinstalled Quicktime 7.3.1 and when I'm in Red Cine and I export to ProRes with my footage it always crashes at the same frame # (which just happens to be 28)

Also, when I use Red Alert, and I use a quicktime proxy file from the red file, and look at it in a Final Cut timeline (newest version)...the footage has all these weird looking digital artifacts, with different colors. Could this be an in camera problem? Is it my actual footage?

Thanks for all your help,

Alex E.

If you haven't already, do a full uninstall of all red software, reboot, and do a clean install now that you've gone back to 7.3.1. I'd put my money on a RedCine issue long before I'd assume the footage is bad.
