  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do i need More Media and Power for using SCARLET on a normal shoot?

I'm just wondering how the workflow of some of you RED-operators is at the moment, especially considering RED-Mags and Power.
I'm used to have as many batteries and Storage in my Bags so that i can shoot a whole day.

But since RED-Mags and RED-Volts are so fast in filling up and running down, i wonder how you manage.
I am thinking about a real-world situation here:
Say a Commercial-Shoot where you are outdoors for 1 complete Day. 3-4 hours of Footage.
No possibility to recharge your redvolts

now in my Basic RED SCARLET Package i have 2 Redvolts that last each about 25 minutes with 10-15 takes of about 30 seconds of recording (i presume)
with a single 64GB SSD i can record 23 minutes of 6:1 4K Footage (which i will probably be using most of the time)
or worst case 40 minutes of 10:1 4K Footage.

that would make it possible to shoot for about 1 hour until both of my REDVolts are empty. And i would have recorded 10-15 minutes of footage (~50% of 64GB).

So in your opinion, how can i make this a reliable and not too expensive workflow?
if i had a View Factor V-lock adapter and 3 Globalmediapro 160Wh Batteries with dual-charger i could theoretically record for 6 hours
and i would need at least 1 additional REDMag to record while offloading the other one.

that adds 1800$ for the powering the SCARLET and 950$ for a second 64GB

RED SCARLET Canon AL pack $14.015
3x V-Lock 160Wh + 64 SSD $ 2.750
_______
$ 16.765

for a working package that i can use in real life... does that make sense? what am i missing?

Two Redvolts and 1SSD are not practical.
Redvolts are great for a lw setup, but for real shooting get at least 2 v-dock batteries...ideally 4 is a normal package.
Regarding SSD cards. IMO- a package with less than 4 ssd's is foolish. We generally have 6-8 per camera, but thats not necessary. 3-4 is the minimum and if you shoot 4K 128gb is the smallest size.

two SSD's leaves no room for error and you will have times when the camera is waiting to shoot.

You definitely need at least perhaps 3 64GBs at the least,

I have 4 128GBs for EPIC just in case something happens when the first 2 get the station I still have 2 that I can put in rotation (media copying being slow...or whatever else)

So on Scarlet I'd say if you could...grab the 4 pack of 64GBs and your pretty ok for basically any situation and there is savings on that 64gb 4 pack so pretty worth it I guess

V-Lock is a definite and you can always have the Volts in the handle (if you keep the handle on) as I've heard that they switch between power, so you would essentially then be keeping the camera on whilst your switching out V-Locks

I'd always keep in mind back ups...at least one back up for everything if possible 2...so 64GB cards, like I Said 4 is playing it pretty damn safe and going with 3-4 V-Locks and the 2 REDVolts...you shouldn't be seeing any issue...

I mean you can always work off of 2 64GBs but you'd have to be extremely good at keeping your system running like a horse and switching in and out the media,

Power wise...anything is possible...you may shoot more, you may shoot less but having a backup for an 'incase' situation is always good...

I realize budget is a factor so this is just my 2cents....

Always best to be optimistic but be prepared for the worst.

My shooting days vary, but it's rare for me to capture more than 5 hours of recorded material a day. Typically I shoot more around 2 hours of material. This will be different for each individual and likely will be different on each project as well. 2 hours for me is like 10-12 thousand feet of S35. That's usually a full day for me.

However, I know for certain things coming up I'll need to be able to capture about 3 or 4 hours on my own with little hope of downloading and I'll attempt to rig up for that as best I can.

I agree about V-mount batteries today being the "go to" for long operating days. However, I'm really curious about the impact of something like the QuadVolt Module where you can run for about 2 hours off a 4 battery load.

In the end I'll probably end up with 12 RedVolts which should provided around 6 hours of "use". SSDs are a different issue all together for me at the moment. I place an order for 2x 64GB SSDs, but I'll either need to get a 4 pack of 64GB or 2 128GB once everything is together likely by January.

I am getting two at first for 4x RedVolts. I will probably get 4 or 8 when I rig up to that scale. I am not sure but the QuadVolt Module might be able to charge the batteries off A/C. That's a 4 port charger useful for end of day and trickle charge use.

No quad volt charger? I mean could try and survive with 2 chargers then grab a quadvolt charger...at least thats what I'm doing...just curious thats all
I got 8 REDVolts so really do need that quad volt charger heh

Not yet but apparently was meant to be in Nov so I'm assuming December/Jan it should be out with the Quad Volt Module...probably debut around same time

I thought to go redvolt, but 30 min in standby and probably like 20 min of recording is a joke, I already got 8 of them and I think it'll be enough for occasional hand held shooting, but I think I will go with bricks
anyways on steadicam I am powered by IDX, and on sticks it is even good to have your setup a bit heavier;
SSDs - that's the money eaters, my day is about four hours of footage on average, so i will run my tests and see how many more of them I need to add to 256Gb that I already have

I got 3 bricks with the VF plate on the back, and 4 pack of 64GB drives. I think is a base start as I do not know yet how much I will need. I may add a couple to this as the money comes back in. Rental houses are also available should the odd job come in where more power and media is needed.

. . . . and you might want a lens or two.
Oh, i have already a few of them... mostly canon, but also a few others:

Canon 24-70 *
Canon 70-200 2.8 IS ***
Sigma 20mm 1.8 *
Tokina 11-16 ***
Samyang 35mm 1.4 ***
Samyang 85mm 1.4 **
Tokina 24-70 2.6 (Nikon) **
Tokina 70-200 2-8 (Nikon) ***

Magic number for me is 8-10 REDvolts and 4 chargers.

Seems to keep them in rotation. 4-6 128GB SSDs with a decent offload station and you cant go far wrong.

Of course that is for EPIC, so Scarlet may get by with 4 SSDs.

Not sure but I imagine the power consumption will remain the same, if not very similar.

Definitely consider a v lock or AB solution not least because they last longer and generally mean you can power external devices such as monitors from Dtap.
