  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do I have this workflow correct?

I don't seem to be seeing anyone running this workflow and thought perhaps I was doing something wrong (even though the workflow in theory and so far in practice seems to work).

1. Shoot 4K 2:1, 16:9 or HD
2. Open Clipfinder and review proxies for focus, adding comments, and take selection
3. Create new sequence in FCP with white paper settings matching M-Proxies
4. Import M-Proxies of choice
5. Edit (watching which transitions and effects are used)
6. Select "Send to Color"
7. Grade the native R3d 2K version in color (since it does not support 4K, correct?)
8. Render
9. Return to FCP with new graded sequence and finalize edit
10. Render

Color seems to be very accurate, especially with the Red Room options. -Does color actually access the native R3D?
-Are there any disadvantages to using Color other than it can't export 4K? It seems that simply doing "send to color" instantly accesses the native R3d and no relinking is necessary.
-If I am just creating a DVD, Bluray, or 1080 QT, is it suggested that I render out of Color with those resolution settings or still render the 2K out of color and bring that back into FCP for final render?

A question:
if you cut with M-Proxies, Color uses the raw files to make the grading?

so you don't have to worry about what your proxies settings are...Color will always just access the raw 4K file?

so are there drawbacks to this workflow?

I find the renders out of Color are not the same quality as a 2K render out of RedCine. The Color renders look fuzzier. The RedCine materials have a sharper, silkier look.

I'm working on a new workflow where I render everything in RedCine completely flat, add a temp color correction in FCP, edit, remove temp CC and then grade in Color. I think the end results might be better.

Do some test renders with the same file in Color and RedCine and look at the difference.

I had to run ColorFixer due to the "looping" bug. That would be step 6a.
