  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

Anyone having random wireless signal drop outs with firmware 1.6? What firmware are you guys using? I'm having random signal drop outs often enough to notice. I've been testing it for some days now. All testing has been within range...actually me standing right beside the motor. This results in me turning the knob...nothing happens (motor doesn't turn) then when the signal comes back (quickly), the motor spins quickly to the ending point of the knob turn.

I have recorded short video with my DJI Follow Focus - works perfect on Red Weapon/Cooke mini s4/i Lens.

Very smooth, powerful and accurate. Tested also with Zeiss CP.2 primes - same works as a dream.
Used to use RedRock Micro Wireless Follow Focus (still using) and I noticed a few differences between.

DJI Pros:
- less weight (motor & remote, best for drones and gimbals)
- less cables
- more accurate (with Cooke due to internal focusing mechanism)
- more features (4x pre-defined ponts, rack speed adjustments etc)
- LCD indicator with % !!!

RedRock Pros:
- FingerWheel !!! (best for gimbals)
- RangeFinder Sensor option (range sonar powered directly from RRM module)
- programmable RECORD button on remote
- powerful torque for stiff zoom lenses (ex Arri Alura)
- tested in battle, reliable since years...

Hey guys,
So my motor is not detected on the Gimbal App anymore. How can I update the firmware? There was a bit of discussion before but has anyone figured it out yet?? LMK.

Hey Yuki,

the only way is to send the motor to the DJI service center...unfortunately.

WHEN it works it's a good WFF system, like every DJI products...

I now use it mainly as backup unit or for B-CAM or for lighter builds/rigs...

Jesus, again.

Motor is not dead, but can t update firmware. It blinks when powered up, but since hand unit is updated, cannot connect to the motor.

Just read Tommaso's post about having no choice but to send it back YET again. I own two units and have had them both working at the same time for a period 25 days total.

Just writing to see if anyone knows how to force upgrade the motor or any workaround.

To clarify, the issue is: upgraded the hand unit, motor (that as far as i know is working) won t show any possible updates on the assistant.

Thanks everyone

Have 3 different units (one personal, one shop and one other local unit) that all now blink on start up but get no signal from the controller anymore. Two have already had motors completely replaced with brand new ones within the first 8 months of use. Over it

I've owned 6 of these, with 4 currently in stock.
All of them have had the motor fail/burn out.
Currently of the 4 we have, 3 are down for motor repairs.
These are excellent when they work, one of my favorites... but damn the motors are garbage.
These should be purchased with a spare motor or two... or just buy an old used analog Bartech...

Here's how I updated the firmware on my unit (also seemed like it wouldn't pair at first).

Plug motor into p-tap, plug canbus lemo cable into handset.

Power it on.

Handset should now drive the motor, or run calibration (this is wired mode).

Once your motor is running wired, get the latest "gimbal" app by downloading from the DJI focus firmware section of the DJI site.

Plug into the USB port on the handset.

Let it analyze your system.

Make sure your computer is connected to internet.

Update all of your devices by clicking each ones firmware version and updating (even if the number matches.)

Power off everything after firmware updates.

Power back up.

Make sure the canbus cable still drives the motor.

Get two paper clips or pins.

Instead of using the handset menu for pairing , just have a friend push the button on the bottom of the motor while you push the button on the bottom of the handset.

You probably have to do this like ten times. Eventually it will pair. I couldn't tell if it was because I held the button down for 5-10 seconds or because I kept pushing them within like a 1-2 second window of each other that it finally linked up.

Guessing they have a short timeout cycle coded in the firmware for pairing, or some interrupt call is not working as it should.

I've had a situation on a shoot with the DJI Focus a month ago:

Tested it with lenses on prep day, everything worked fine. When building the camera on set next day, it would do auto calibration normally for a lens, but after that it would only turn the lens a few degrees when I turned the wheel around. I tried it several times and the same thing happened.

I swapped in another lens, and it worked fine, for the rest of the day. It was a rather cold day outside, and the vintage lens had dampened from the cold.

Maybe this is a "safe mechanism" not to burn the motors? That makes sense to me, that it wouldn't spin the lens if it feels too stiff when calibrated.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

My motor has been stellar with no malfunctions thus far, but the controller shut off in the middle of
a pull and won't restart, take a charge, or show any signs of life when plugged in.

Sent it to the shop in Carson. Anyone else had this problem?

I'm out of warranty so I hope this is an easy fix

$413 repair quote to fix a "control mainboard bad." Quote claims no proof of purchase.

I bought this thru DJI.com via paypal right when they were released. Anyone have similar experience/advice?

Hello Rob--

Sorry to hear about the issue you're having. I've contacted our support office and apparently they are not allowed to access customer information on dji.com's sales system. You simply need to login to your dji.com account and get your purchase history to provide proof of purchase.

I have a strange issue at the moment where the manual cabled calibration doesn't work. Auto calibration is fine. And manual calibration if I manually turn the focus barrel on the lens is fine. But using the dji controller to go left and right and set stops (Manual remote I believe?) doesn't work. Seems a really odd thing to not work considering everything else seems to.

I had this so often that I always do a barrel cal now...

When doing manual calibration use the up and down arrows to turn the motor, not the wheel.
