  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

How can you control the speed between A,B,C,D points? Rack speed. I have been changing the Rack speed from 5% to 95% but no results, the speed between A and B point still the same for 5% and for 95%.

I understand your situation. I also have had a few issues with the system. I had to have a motor replaced as it burned out immediately. One thing to be aware of is that if you have any of the hard set markers on the focus control wheel clamped down you will not get full range on the lens. Probably not the issue but another thing to consider. Have a great day, Adam

Thanks for the suggestions Adam. I finally realized it's because I set the Calibrate setting to Low which screwed everything up. It seems like all the settings have to be at Normal for the FF to function correctly. As for your smoking motor story, that is nuts! An wireless FF should not be the cause of a fire! But with DJI, I'm not surprised.

Hello everyone,

I just got word that my motor is being shipped back after repair. Let s see how long it will last. I wonder how everyone here that had a motor repaired have fared in the long run...

I ve been in touch with a rep from DJI and they claim they were not aware that the motors are burning up. From what I could gather, the wireless focus is not something they consider to be big business, and I wouldn t hold my breath for upgrades such as the motor and run / stop cables. That being said, he was interested in reading about failing motors online, and told me he would pass along all this feedback, including the urgent need for run stop cables for at least red and arri.

Also, I d ask to like everyone if you think something like a lentequip safe tap http://lentequip.com/products/safetap could help protect this fragile motors.

Thanks.

I've searched online for ever, and can't seem to find out what is and isn't ok for charging the dji focus kit. It says not directly into wall, so does that mean If i get one, i'll have to only plug into computer?

That seems a bit odd. I have been plugging mine into a standard apple wall wort with no problems yet.

Interesting. I have been running my motor off of the Ronin just fine, but always kinda worried about powering it straight from a brick and if that could fuck the motor up at least over time. Anybody doing that with no problems? Maybe i'm being paranoid, its probably cause the cable they ship has tabs on it preventing it from fitting into a regular D-tap output. Whats up with that too?

I've converted one of my power cables to the Safetap and, being that a motor changes the amperage it's pulling depending on the speed and torque, it keeps lighting up like a Xmas tree every time the motor turns. It has worked fine but I'm afraid that at some point, maybe with a stiff lens, the motor will wanna pull too much and trigger the Safetap shutdown. Hasn't happen yet. I love putting the Safetap on all my Ptap cables, but my gut says that it's not great with focus motors...

What are Run Stop cables?

Cables that interface with the camera to allow record trigger

Pardon the knob question, but would record trigger allow better regulation of power so it's not running high all the time? So when the camera is not recording, there is less power going to the Motor to keep it from getting fried?

Or am I totally off base?

Personal opinion - As users we shouldn't have to take any extraneous measures to add additional aftermarket mods to keep an in-warranty product from freaking out and burning up on its own.

If you depend on this system to have 100% uptime, the only way to do that is buy a spare motor - and maybe a spare handset, and spare cables.

doing things like plugging it in with reverse polarity will obviously kill it. I'm way less likely to plug it into a ronin stage than onto a battery or power distribution box, just because I don't think the Ronin Stages are designed with high amperage output.

I'm all about the idea of self-reliance to a point, but it's also important that if your product is failing, then you need to hold DJI's feet to the fire.

FWIW, mine is still going strong.

so... got my motor back. I also sent my cables to be checked, just in case. Motor switched on fine, reconnected with the hand unit. I chose automatic calibration, and it does just that. However, when i turn the hand unit, nothing happens. Tried a couple of times, different cables, etc.
Does anyone have any insight as to what i could do differently?

Thanks

Ok, I've heard a lot of horror stories about this remote FF from all over the place. Enough to stop recommending it to people. Is DJI actually working on improvements or what?

I have the DJ unit and its one of the first units showed case at IBC 2015.

every time I turn it on it works fine. its accurate and works well. If for any reason some units dont work DJ is he place to call, as there isnt any magic that can turn your none functioning unit to a functional one.

My comments about the DJ focus was purely based on the unit we have bought.

and it works well with out failing.

kind regards

From what I've seen and heard, it's a totally functional and usable product (I've only used it once for a show that was shooting on L series glass and it worked perfectly).

BUT, if you are going to purchase a unit, and your gigs demand perfection, then you are best off buying two full sets and always having a spare. Heck you could probably buy 5 and still end up cheaper than a brand new Preston package.
