  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

I have 2. So I went ahead and upgraded one. The upgrade process itself was fairly painless. Not as simple as a camera firmware update but doable. 4 pieces of firmware to update. 2 for the controller and 2 for the motor.
When I finished updating I realized that the motor and the controller were disconnected. Looked up on the new manual how to reconnect them. Followed the instructions and the controller said "failed". Tried again and again and again and the same result. Not until I power cycled both the remote and the motor that they suddenly connected.
Set up the motor on the camera and calibrated and everything seems to be working fine. Just don't forget to go back in the menu and reset all the speed and torque settings to maximum. The calibrations seem to be holding up fine.
I have a job on Tuesday and will report back on how it goes. If everything proves successful, I'll be upgrading my second setup.
Besides the pickup on the motor-controller reconnection, everything seems good.

Same problems here, but in the end the new firmware seems to work fine. I think you're safe to upgrade. Big plus that the last calibration is stored! This was a huge problem for me before, especially when you're on a gimbal and need to recalibrate every time you change batteries. So thanks DJI, great support!

Tested our DJI focus on last commercials - with Leica -R lenses absolutely OK.
As previously read in this thread the right angle cable for the motor is a must have!!

One thing i noticed on the motor (but didn´t read about it in this thread) is the high pitched buzzing sound. Is this just on ours?

Well today when I got the focus out for a shoot, the handheld unit powered on fine, but the motor will not power on at all anymore.

I tried a different battery, the other included cable, all to no avail.

I had used it for about 3 hours of testing on Saturday with great results.

I emailed dji, and I'm hoping the repair process is not too lengthy.

What batteries are you guys using the D-tap from?

I probably will be getting one, but for this item, I might buy the extended warranty with it from B&H. Being on the Facebook Ronin forum, there too many posting where the Ronin just stops working. DJI does seem a bit risky.

oh crap! here we go (back to dji)

My unit is very quiet - before you send it off try to operate directly from a cam battery D-Tap and not power it from the Ronin - the motor I mean

see if there is anything changed, just in case

regards

Thanks for the tips. I do not have a Ronin. I just have the DJI Focus and power it with a D-Tap battery.

I made it with the ZoomH4N very close to the motor. As a reference point you can hear me focusing (without a lens attached).
Sound stays the same on different torque settings.

Maybe this is normal ... ?

Hm not sure what to say, cause even your descriptions I cant really tell, thing is , the Zoom can hear more that our ears can at such a close to the lens distance.

I wish I could help , but mine doesnt sound anything like this from my human ears LOL, but perhaps it does if I put a microphone so close.

hope you can solve it, but better test it with another unit side by side if possible to see if this is over the normal.

regards

Hello. My dji wireless focus just stopped working. Light went off on the motor, handset works. Has anyone experienced this? Anyone know of a possible on set reset or something? Th anks in advance.

Assuming you tried moving your power cable to the other port on the motor, or tried a different power cable ?

Also, might want to make sure power is coming from your Ptap port still.
