  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

Hi Friends,

I'm quite close to pulling the trigger on DJI Wireless FF.

Are you guys happy with it? Has it held up well and not broken down. Since it's been out for a while now, would you guys recommend it?

Also, can I buy the DJI WFF locally in Los Angeles?

I really want this to work with WIFI on Weapon or Epic with WIFI on canon mount. That would be RAD.

Separate question about the motor:

Anyone know if there are Right angle Lemos available for this? I don't like the idea of it sticking down below the camera like that. Or can you just mount them off a top rail?

ok... so know it's becoming apparent that these motors like to burn after a few weeks of moderate use. Mine didn t last a month. It really annoys me that dji instead of acknowledging the issue have me go trough a check-list of troubleshooting steps, even though the motor failed the same way it has failed other owners. I am torn between accepting it as "early adopter pain" or getting mad about "fraud". I noticed that the option to buy a stand alone motor has been removed from online stores.

Before getting seriously mad about this, I thought I'd check to see what has been the general consensus regarding DJI , their products and costumer service (i understand my motor has a started a many month journey to china...)

Thanks in advance

I run mine on "high" all the time.

haven't had a problem yet, and it gets used a lot by me, and also rented out.

Under what circumstances did yours burn up ? What lenses were you using ?

I would bet you have Lemo pins failing to make contact before a motor burns up (unless it's plugged in with the wrong polarity) which also I'm sure happens to some people.

I just got mine today. It's a great follow focus, really smooth and like many DJI products, really well thought out. However, their CS is terrible and their products are definitely known to break. It's very rare that I buy an extended warranty, but I did for this because DJI stuff is so risky. But it's the only WFF in this price range that's works well (until it breaks, LOL).

Dan Kanes did say if you got a good one, you are lucky. So keeping my fingers crossed that I got a good one, but not holding my breath.

Hi everyone. To clarify: i did not break one of the flimsy pins, i did not burn it with reverse polarity. It was on camera, working great like it always did. And then it just stopped working. Light went off. It just died.
I am not upset about the potentially weak pins, wich i heard about before buying the unit. You get what you pay for, and I accepted the risk (and bought more cables). What upsets me is the fact that, apparently this motors do burn and they just kept selling them. Again, i am not complaining about the system - preston addicted ACs loved the handunit and how it feels, how easy it is to calibrate, everything (just not the absent run stop button).
Instead of just burning every other customer, they should have worked on it a bit more so a interesting system could be a serious contender - and not a headache.
I have even considered buying a second motor while this one is serviced, and later adding a second handset, but the stand alone motor option has vanished. Suspicious and a bit infuriating.
Cvp mentioned 3 to 4 weeks workaround. I don t believe that for a second, even if cvp have always been a delight to deal with. Let s see how it plays out. If someone knows of a site selling a stand slone motor please let me know. It will be cheaper than renting out a ffocus for the next few months.

Whend did they have additional motors up for sale? I've always wanted a spare In just such an occasion.

If you are in USA/ Southern California - their US headquarters is in Burbank, and I think it's there to serve industry professionals like us, so if you have an issue I would recommend going directly their or calling their if you are local.

Just got my DJI Wireless Follow Focus and yesterday and this morning it worked well. However, it seemed to start acting weird already.

1) At first, the Automatic calibrate worked great. Then in the middle of the day, it would not move the entire range between Infinity and Minimum Focus, only a limited degrees in the middle, like 30 degrees or so. This is with Zeiss ZFs with hard stops. Strangely, this fixed itself.

2) Manual-Remote - I went this route with the Sigma 18-35mm (no hard stops) and I was able to successfully get it to map from Infinity to Minimum Focus this morning. However, this afternoon, I can only get it to to the Infinity point. When I try to set the Minimum point, it only barely rotates 2 or 3 degrees and then says “Maximum point reached” or something like that.

Now it’s early evening, and I can barely get Manual-Remote to move more than 3 degrees.

3) Manual-Hand - I cannot get it do anything. The Motor which normally has a slight hum just goes completely silent when I set it to Manual Hand.

I noticed that if I power cycle the unit - unplug the Lemo and turn off power on the receiver, sometimes it fixes things. However, at this point even after setting everything back to default and power cycling, I cannot get the Manual-Remote to work correctly, and the Manual-Hand is just completely dead.

Automatic Calibration seems to work well again, but who knows for how long?

Am I doing something wrong? Is there anything I can try to fix this?

Manual hand means that you turn the lens by hand to set end points.

problem one sounds related to mapping short cuts using ABCD buttons, while in these modes you have limited end point throw.

i was confused AF when I first got it too.

They need to make a video detailing every aspect of the device.

i ordered an OMOD POE + Rtmotion system and will do a comparison when it comes .

Thanks Dan. I did not set any pre-set with the buttons, but maybe I did something by accident. I'll check it out again and take a second look at the Hand Focus.

I figured out that when I set the Calibration Torque to Minimum (I thought that a lower setting might be gentler on the focus ring), that's when the DJI WFF kind of freaked out. Manual-Remote does not work with Cali Torque at Minimum. When I set it back the Normal, Manual-Remote started working again. Hopefully that keep Auto Calibrate working as well.

I always run on full blast hahaha

That's because you own grown-up glass! I only rent those and am stuck with kiddy lenses.

As usual, thanks so much for all your help Dan. Much appreciated.

I understand your situation. I also have had a few issues with the system. I had to have a motor replaced as it burned out immediately. One thing to be aware of is that if you have any of the hard set markers on the focus control wheel clamped down you will not get full range on the lens. Probably not the issue but another thing to consider. Have a great day, Adam

I've searched online for ever, and can't seem to find out what is and isn't ok for charging the dji focus kit. It says not directly into wall, so does that mean If i get one, i'll have to only plug into computer?

It was the very 1st time I plugged it in... Brand New no lens attached at the time. I was powering it from the P-Tap on the bottom on the Ronin-M. Smoke came out and the entire hotel room smelt like meth for the next 3 days :-)

They fixed it and returned it within a week. Its working fine now but lets see :-)
