  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

So we sent ours back as it was test unit. In short, it made it through an incredibly challenging feature. Never broke down. Never lost signal. It was up on about 90 percent of our shots. We used it in fairy extreme conditions. My AC's loved everything about. We gave DJI notes about the clamp and suggestions for making the lemo cable right angle. The current lemo become somewhat vulnerable especially for shots with the camera on the floor or sandbags. It's just waiting to get dinged. Lots to discover in the hand control menu. There's an LED light over the marking disc we learned about half way through the shoot. You can also turn off the LED on the motor as well (which can be distracting for talent). I wish we had a chance to use it on a big zoom. We did use it on a Zeiss LW 70-200 cine zoom and it pulled it with out issue. And the pre-sets were awesome for snap zooms, quick focus ques, etc. Range was better than our Teradek bolt, so we never found out its max. Build quality - excellent.

WOW. Just wow.

thats a bummer :/

I don't know Why that's a bummer, it's a perfectly elegant and normal solution from where I'm sitting, plus if you are in an emergency situation you can use a cell phone charger or battery like a mophie to run/charge it.

honestly don't know how it could be more simple or better but I'm down to be enlightened

The danger is that the battery lasts for so long that your AC may forget to recharge it. On my last shoot we didn't charge it for 3 days until the AC caught that and put it on charge.
But it still had a bar on the battery indicator...

man, rtmotion handset, latitude and fool control better come in at or under $2k…all im saying...

I had a chance to try this device out 2 times last week. We were pretty impressed, had it hooked up to a dragon with a set of canon CN-E primes, worked great.. My 1st was psyched on it, she said she liked it better than the bartech which we normally make her use

one thing we did not like was the position of the lemo cable from the motor, made rigging it sort of funky

Anyone done tests on older glass such as contax? Wondering how the motors handle them. Thanks!

Hey Tyler,
I've tested the DJI Focus with my old set of Contax Zeiss, Leica-R, even Sim Digital's Angénieux Optimo 24-290's focus and zoom rings, the motor handled it like a champ.
The right angle lemo cable as well as remote start/stop is on its way.

If you guys have any requests for lenses to be tested on the DJI Focus, let me know. I'll head over to a local rental house on Monday or Tuesday, if you're in the LA area, feel free to come hangout.

Super speeds with a clip on matte box attached. That is a common config for steadicam, and they can be grumpy.

Any info on how the remote start/stop will work? From what I see there's no button left that could be assigned for that..? Really looking forward to have this feature coming, that's the only thing that I really miss, especially when it comes to gimbal work.
Thanks!
