  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

The only downside I see to the MDR being in the motor, is then you can't use them for other things. Just yesterday and AC was trying to put a huge heavy preston motor on my steadicam rig, and I said, "here use this instead" and handed him my Red/ET motor. Also makes things harder to trouble shoot. I don'tknow, I'm on the fence about the all in one concept.

I would be beyond shocked if the cinegears motors communicated with any other transmitter.

Hey Ned, that sounds good. Where did you get this information? Do you know if this will be an upgrade for existing units or a complete seperate package?

Got the info from DJI rep.

Anyway, day 3 of a feature and the unit so far has been holding up well. This is a Ronin, Steadicam, Dolly type of a show, so there are lots of complicated pulls. Mostly lightweight primes (Leicas). Lots of precision CU work. My AC found that by cranking up all the torque settings she was able to get the most pinpoint control. I've yet to test it on a heavy or stiff lens but for general use on modern primes, it kills it.

Only downside is no light by the marking on the hand wheel. Solved it with a small clip light, but it would be a nice addition down the road.

Size has been great for gimbal balancing.

There are lights built. You probably have the settings turned off. Go into the Settings and under LED control, you can turn things on and off.

Thanks for the information Ned. But that power cable coming straight outta the bottom of the unit is terrible no? At least supply it with a right angle connector...maybe pass that along to your DJI guy??

Does it come with costumer support?

No.

Can you power this thing any other way than P tap? Is there any way to power it off the remote or a battery attached to the remote (when not using it remotely)?

Thanks Chris for the video. You mentioned that you would do some rack focus pulls but then didn't... this is what I am waiting to see, how fast it reacts and the responsiveness/lag. Considering ordering one but for now I am on the fence.

You have a lot of control for rack speeds. It's really fast and responsive. Will shoot a little snippet today so you can see

Yep a couple issues there but that is still quite fast! Much better that Cinegears IMO... Thanks Chris.

Granted I'm demoing a prototype, I still much prefer the Cinegears system. Controller feels better and is much more smooth on the actual racking, motor is quieter, has record trigger, etc. Let's see if DJI addresses some of the issues I've been having.

My CineGears was very slow and dampened. It also went in for repair about 2 times and never felt like a robust product. Even the power cable failed almost instantly and I am very easy on kit... I am thinking about the new movcan unit but its still not available here in the US

I'm currently testing the DJI unit as well, and so far I'm pretty impressed (I'll normally use Preston single channel F/I's and Bartec's). We used it on set all day today and it performed great. I'm testing a prototype as well, and I haven't experienced any of the issues that Chris has (yet), but then again... it's a prototype. I'll be fully battle-testing it next week on a larger shoot and with some sticky lenses to really see what its made of. Contextually, when you look at it from a sheer price/value/feature perspective, I think it has the potential to be really disruptive. More to come....

Right now, no, it's a 5-pin (think that's right) lemo connection. They may come out with other cable adaptions, so we'll have to see.
