  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin

Thanks Peter and Dave.

Ordered from B+H almost two weeks ago, and they say no estimate as to when it may come in.
I see some people on amazon selling it -- might have to cancel with BH and go with an amazon seller for an upcoming shoot.
Anyone else playing the waiting game?

Hi all
So my interest in brushless gimbals started, as I am sure a lot of you did with that first video that was posted with the Movi. My interest is some what unique, in that I amalmost exclusively a natural history cameraman specializing inanything marine. We mostly shoot underwater but also do some topsideshooting from small boats in a lot of different sea conditions. Mostof the time we shoot in rough almost unworkable seas. What makes thiseven worse is that most of the time we require longer lenses in the70-200mm range which makes for a lot of unusable footage, somebarely usable and on occasions we might shoot a gem of a clip. TheMovi was just too expensive to buy as an experiment and I even triedmaking my own brushless gimbal with an Alexmoss 32bit controller. Iwas recently working on a 3 month contract where we were workingalongside a drone crew flying a DJI S1000 with a Zen Muse GH4 gimbalunder it from a boat. The footage that these guys got was absolutelyamazing and the Zen Muse had no trouble booting up and workingperfectly on a small rocking and bouncing boat. Based a lot on thisand some intuition we splashed out and bought a DJI Ronin. I spentsome time balancing and calibrating it and just playing with itaround the office. A few days ago I finally got a chance to take itout for a spin on a boat. This was my first time actually shootingfootage with it. I rigged it up with the Canon 70-200mm V2, Red 5”touch with the Red 3' lcd cable, the Red belt clip V- lock batterywith the standard Red power cord and an EasyRig Std length top arm.The Rig worked very well for our purposes. There are definitely somethings that I will change but all in all we are extremely happy withthe way the Ronin performed. The link below is the first test on arelatively calm sea day but you can still occasionally see the choppysea conditions.

I'm curious what the rental for a Ronin is going to be going for. Specially with so many in the market. I'm getting mine in on Thursday, and my Dragon next week. Feels like Christmas!

I need to rent a gimbal this weekend and got a quote from a local shop... The Ronin was quoted at $400 per day with tech (not to be confused with an operator). That seems mighty steep considering the initial price. I'm wondering if this is the average price Ronin's are renting for. Too much or just right?

In my business model, this is how I break it down:
Ronin (200)+Bartech(200)+Paralinx Arrow kit with monitors(200), total $600/day, 3 day week.
Ronin alone $400, also 3 day week.

were renting it for 250 with no extra anything.

Hi Mark,

Great stuff. I think you've just found another application for gymbal stabilisers: topside boat footage is really smooth even on longer lenses. I'm sure 120fps helps as well but this is great stuff.

Interesting.

Thanks guys. That's pretty much what I expected for a bare Ronin... 200-250. Some of the quotes we've gotten for a 3-day rental just doesn't make sense. Just wanted to confirm.

I'm also very curious to know more about this joystick.
Also do any of you have any recommendations on a programable 3rd party control system for the Ronin?
I would love to be able to program a pan/tilt movement and then have it repeat automatically. I guess this might be possible with an advanced controller.

Is there any news about the joystick. For my application the joystick is going to be a required accessory.
