  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

Btw,

This shot is a BTS pic from the set of our latest Fashion Film we just wrapped, the rig in the shot was not yet complete, a cMotion Camin, and Motor was added.

Sorry I can't show anything from the previous jobs, nor footage form those or this last one, but will be shown as soon as it is done... :)

Ketch,

The spacing on the back looks very tight - how many degrees of tilt are you able to get before the battery impacts the frame?

Once you completed the rig (adding the motor and required support), did that shift you even further back?

Yeah, this was unfortunately the only shot I got to take with my iPhone for the set up, shot nonstop till midnight after that... This Fashion Film was the most intense shoot I ever did to date...

No, once the FF System, Wireless Monitoring and Matte Box with filters was added the front weight allowed for the Camera to be moved forward allowing in turn for a wider rear space and for a generous title range, yet had to be still limited on the iOS App...

I just finished the design of a rear mounted "LowRider" Battery plate which will allow for more Tilt range, as it rides lower, and for better center of gravity, since the weight of the battery will seat much lower as well.

I go thru this on the Video review as well as an other couple of surprises I know many Ronin users will appreciate to see, this have come to be after now several months of Ronin use around the globe, which have required me to make some sacrifices here na there, and pushed me to design couple of accessories to go with that were imperative...

One this rear battery plate, like nothing out there, and the other a Transport compact case...

Well,

I should have specified that I have designed one and started and assisted the design of the other, but I am not building either, as each manufacturer is making each one... :)

They should be both ready by next weekend or the one after... 10 to 15 days from today.

This is of course for the first Proto of each...

How can you balance it when its so close to the back . Looks like the battery is right against it. I cant get mine balanced because of this.
It shakes and vibrates like mad. I have watched the videos many times . But, i can't do you one where you point the lens up because it hits the back of the Ronin . Any help anyone?
Thanks,
Tim

What's peoples opinion on 50mm vs 80mm extension arms?

Want to run EPIC, Cinema Prime, O Connor Mattebox with a VLock battery on the back. 50mm enough?

Thanks,

Phil

Timothy,

that at pic was taken while still in progress of setting up the camera with lots more accessories to add, I have written that
...

Once fully set up it seats further away from the back but even if it was to be operated as is It would work just fine if properly balanced just that you would have a very limited tilt.

Phil,

Either longer arm will provide plenty of room for your intended set up, I am doing this already with the standard shorter arms, just needed to make a custom battery plate which I'll bring to market in the next couple of weeks, the key here is not to just look at longer arms which will make more difficult to hand held the rig and properly balance it, but to instead properly set up the entire camera system to begin with.

I have found that what is needed is actually some counter balancing weight which thankfully DJI is brining to market, then you'll look less at longer arms and more on how to rethink your balancing as with weight as it will allow you to move forward the body leaving more space in the back.

If I get those weight kits in time will include them I the review.

What are you guys using as a counter-weight for the center axis while on some flavor of extended arms? I'm running a relatively trimmed down Epic with Canon Cine lenses, and the weight on the camera stage is too much for the battery side of Ronin, even when it's shifted all the way back. Has anybody found a stable mounting point or way to make the battery area heavier?

After testing, I decided that it is not worth the effort in using Arm extensions or longer arms... While counter weight will/should surely assist in getting a better balance, it i snot the correct answer.

But I am confident that DJI, will eventually bring a solution to a longer Center Top Arm is also implement, were perfect balance can be had with a simple knob adjustment of the Center Axis as it can be done now when using standard Arms.

Having said that, DJI has made and should be releasing anytime a set of new accessories, which include also a counter balancing series of weights, which this will be extremely helpful also to assist perfect balance with Top Heavy camera rigs.

Try the Cinemilled arms extensions, they are fantastic, easy to install without any motor trouble. Great pieces.

Neither the DJI 50mm or 80mm longer Arms, nor Cinemilled extensions have anything to do with the way the motors work, only different is the installation requirements, were to install DJI's longer Arms you must remove first the Standard arms, and this requires a bit of fitness in Unplugging the cables and passing them thru the small holes in the Arms, and re-Plugging them in, were with Cinemilled's option, you just unscrew the Ronin's arm at the origin, and attaching the extension at both ends, then just pulling away the cable form with in the arm itself but without the need to unplug it at the motors.

Once mounted, both will act and react within the Ronin stabilization and balancing in exactly the same way, both will need balancing weight at the bottom rear as to counterbalance the lack of a longer Center Arm at the top, as this remains the same in both cases...

At list till DJI or some one else's figures out a Top Arm extension as well to allow for proper balancing when using extended Arms for longer camera rigs, as adding that much weight to the already heavy rig is not a preferable solution... :)

Well, I have the cinemilled arms extension, very easy to install because I didn't want to open the motor like the dji arms replacement. And for balancing it's like the same that the standard, no problem with my FS700.

Alexander,

With all do respect I doubt very much that you have perfect balancing of the entire system, as it is at times difficult to get perfect full system balance depending on center of gravity of the camera set up without some adjusting of accessories placement while there is a lack of counter balance weights...

If you do have a perfect System balance, it is because you have cleverly figure out away to counterbalance the center of gravity of you camera without weights, but simply moving around your accessories as to make them act as counter balance weight... If you did this Bravo, and good that you were allowed depending of the accessories in use with your particular set up, but it won't be the same for all...

And this is with standard Arms design to fit within the measurements for proper calibration with the Center Axis...

When adding length to the Arms, automatically and mathematically you are changing the dynamics of balancing the system, and this will be very hard to achieve without counterweights and or a somewhat compromised overall balance of the system...

Having the camera perfectly balance were no matter were you place it as far as off the Roll axis, the Tilt Axis or the Pan axis, still does not mean you have a fully and perfectly balanced system, as there is still the Center Axis to get balanced, by adjusting the Center Axis position of balance via rolling it to position, which with a fully loaded Epic is on the very back, and when there is no more room to go back the only way us to add weights on the lower part of the camera system to counterbalance and allow for the center axis adjustment bar to be rolled back forward a bit to achieve perfect system balance.

I won't say anything anymore about my Video Review... As I am yet again deep in Hell with work and major moving happening yet again...

But when that will be out, then every one will get clearly what I mean and will also fully understand the name of the game in properly balancing a Brushless Gimbal, but if it works for you the way it is, I am of course happy for you.

Two sentences

Perfect balance means perfect static balance and perfect dynamic balance, and since you use Gimbals in motion , dynamic balance is very much needed but unfortunately, it cannot been achieved in any of the given geometries and structure and other limitations.

so no matter how well you think your camera is balanced, its just static balance , and its not perfect nor it will ever be perfect for dynamic shots . No equality on stretching the motors no matter how good your static balance is. so dont swear on perfect balance because it doesnt exist in Gimbals of this generation. :out:

Well, with the extends cinemilled arms, I can balance like before when I have counter weight. Next Job I will do a pictures, when I put the camera upstair and on the right or left side for exemple, nothing move. Maybe for the FS700 it's different because the camera is longer, but in my case, it's good.

yes it can be the case. That its not valid for all cameras and all lens configs though, even at your case, if you have a big selection of lenses, you might find this a problem.

Good that its all fine for you. thats the only thing that matters.
