  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

Ketch,
Happy to hear that you have finally got your production unit for review. It was becoming uncomfortable reading people doubt your intentions. I am sure you will do a balanced review despite DJI being your sponsor.
Cheers,
Sabyasachi

Thanks Sabyasachi!!

and yes... I list Sponsors for full disclosure... And since I ultimately choose my Sponsors and the gear to be Sponsored with, my reviews and opinions of them will always be an honest and detail one both on the good and or on the bad side of things and all sponsors know this well!!

Hey everyone. Just wanted to say a thank you to all on this forum. I got my Ronin and - as expected - my Sony F3 is just a little too big for it. I was planning on using my T2i in the meantime until the XL arms became available. Now that I've used it a bit and my forearms are starting to look like Popeye's... I might just stick with my T2i for now. ;)

Thought I would share my first production with it (and a DJI F550 as well)

Hi Spencer,

The XL Arms, which actually is not just that, but a complete Kit for obvious Center Pan Axis balancing issues that would occur otherwise if it was just the same rig with larger longer Arms, has not yet come to market, just been tested in Beta, and no final word yet on any availability of the system as either a Kit, or a complete unit named XL or anything else.

Since this thread has been named RoninXL I have been waiting to finalize final Video Review with in detail specs of the why and how, but at this point I might go ahed to do the review with the standard Ronin, and those like you that need a longer range of camera space to position and properly balance bigger longer rigs will have to wait... I just can not say how long at this time, but if Willis himself, or any one form dji won't report it here, I will do so when that info becomes available to me.

Question..will they fix shooting upside down and allow the camera to turn to a upright position? I picked one up in a store and I was caught off guard from the weight. I can imagine what it would have felt like with my epic lens etc. attached, great product and price but I really want to see if they are going to correct filming upside down. I purchased the first DJI Drone but now they have a perfect one with camera etc.

Hey Tony,

Currently the Ronin works well in all Modes configurations, including Brief case mode and Upside mode, yet DJI is continuously working on making the system thru Software Upgrades better and better, and this goes for both the actual software that will make the Ronin run smother and smother at each update and currently we (all Beta Tester Team) are testing a new one... So, if you jump on board the DJI train you will never be left on the trucks waiting for a new model to make things better, but you'll get updates to make your Ronin run ever better at each new Update... :)

not that I have anything against the DJI but this is not true if you look at their drone history. They just replaced drones to be better, then upgrading the old ones...
Could be different with Ronin...

Uros, with drones for the most part there is no "brain" to have a firmware upgraded on. Most of their drone improvements are physical (see the latest S1000 "plus") and such a changes can't be addressed via firmware. The flight controllers and gimbals on the other hand do have a "brain" and have their firmware upgraded on regular basis. This is going to be the same thing for the Ronin. I have been personally through 4 firmware updates in the last three months with the Ronin and each offered a significant improvements along with bug fixes...

Also - with the Ronin - DJI is completely overhauling their pro customer support system...

Is everyone just content with revolts and the side mount v locks? I want to mount my batteries onto the top handle bar of the ronin Im surprised there isn't more information on this. Ive gone through so many pages on ronin threads and still have yet to find a battery solution that doesn't sit on the gimbal itself. Is it just me or am I overlooking a ronin power solution thread?

Uros,

As Peter said, there is a very big difference from Drones to Ronin, as far as upgradability of it's functions via Software Updates, as we do on our RED Cameras, and other Gear we do it on the Ronin as well, and I have seen the difference been made at each update, and the current Beta is giving very nice results that when ready will be shared on all Ronin to give yet an extra bit of niceness... ;)

Hey Mike,

I have tried that, but it only works in a certain mode, if you start going to the various modes for Standard to BriefCase and to Upside Down, Reverse modes, then any cable placed on top NEEDS to be very flexible and very thin.

I have used and continue to use a Very Thin Cable and very flexible for the Red Touch 9" Monitor ( I know over done) and this so far has not presented any issues, so once you use such similar cable to power the camera then you can certainly use a Handle Bar Battery Mount.

However for me this hasn't turned pout to be a good solution because I use the Gimbal with and without Handle Bars, meaning that I Remove the top Bar and side handles completely and only operate with One Center Handle, that of the Center Pan Axis, and there would be NO place to put a Battery there, also I have found out that that much wait on one side of the top Bar makes holding it not so comfortable as it is not properly balanced, unless you have a equally heavy weight on the opposite side, which with the 9" Touch we were just about there, so not to make this an issue, but the issue remained that for me I need to translate form set up to set up very fast, and by mounting the battery directly on the Camera body, allows for such faster changes of set ups.

At last, I am about to get done with the commitments taken int hit months, and finally to make good on my promise of a nice in depth Video review, were I'll discuss and show how I use the Ronin and why I use it in the ways I do, and if any one sees inspiration in such ways, I'll share with pleasure any pieces of gear used and were to buy them, including some customized pieces I had made.

Ketch! thanks for your advice man. I think I will be mainly using my Ronin in standard mode so I think the battery mounted to the handle grip will work for me. I have my lcd connected to the handle grip with a thin 36" lemo cable and it seems to work great. I am looking foreward to your video review and hopefully finding a battery plate and cable that will work for me

Hey guys,

First I like to thank you for your patience, truly appreciated, even the sarcasm on some posts... As it is well deserved in this case... :)

I am finally getting some of the things that kept me occupied in this past month almost done, and while there is a lot of footage we shot on the Ronin, I have decided NOT to use any of it and instead, actually create a Fashion Film project here in Milan Italy were I am currently staying, and base that short on the Ronin, while utilizing also other equipment, actually a wide range of equipment just as it would be done on e areal production.

This to showcase not only the capacity of the Ronin as a Brushless Gimbal it self, but showcase also it's strength and any weaknesses when utilized on areal production, how it integrates on the Set, and how it transfer form one piece of Gear to the other, how fast it gets put to work, and how it can be integrated and or used with other equipment on set, as well as accompany this with the promised BTS video and Photos, and of course that long coming in detail Video review, set up and balancing tutorial.

I am hoping that as I wrap it all up, we do get this project done next month, and finally deliver on my promise which for one reason or an other has been delayed over and over...

But all I can say is that for both those that already have a Ronin, and those still thinking about it, it would be worth the wait to see what I'll bring to you!!

I'm trying to find the posts/thread about the Ronin Quick Release plate, that would allow you to pull your camera off the Ronin and put it on a tripod without pulling the plate off. Can someone point me in the right direction? 8 Day shoot coming up and will be Ronin heavy.
Thanks!
