  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

all the above with out handle and viewfinder is minus 1,4kg Ketch.thats how much a top handle and evf weights from the Alexa pdf.

so you are talking finally about the Alexa M. good to know.

please add all the needed accessories that you need to shoot my friend, lens, rods, focus motor, wireless, matebox, doveplate, and then come to the correct conclusion.

thats just cameras with out all those gear you need them to shoot with.

kind regards

The weight I reported is the correct one, for all Alexa models, and not the M, lens, lens motor, Wireless system & Matte Box are of course to be added.

The camera that ultimately can be used is not the one that can be properly balanced by the Motors, and not the camera that fits in the XL arms.

My statement was always on that even the Alexa could be used on the Ronin XL kit, as the extra 3" was enough, now we need to choose the proper Alexa to put on, and it does NOT need to be the M, but a Standard Alexa or Alexa XT can be used, SHOULD be able to be used, at which point other accessories will need to come in consideration with Motors capacity.

I would definitely not want to use an M, as having a cable connecting your camera to an other camera, called recorder is simply never going to be a set up I would use and was a move on Arri's part I simply don't understand or agree with.

But at this point I think is safe to just wait till the camera can be tested on the Ronin with the XL kit, till then we are just talking, that it can it should or it can't and it shouldn't... :)

hm ok Ketch, when you do fit an Alexa, any Alexa of the ones exist at present time, I would be interested to see this. Or report the experience on trying to.

edit" I wouldnt call the lens an accesory... because its something that is needed hahaha , unless Arri has discovered the lens-less camera....kidding of course dont get wind up now , will you?

thanks in advance

Sure thing Constantine, if I can at some point do such test I'll report for sure to see if it can be done or not, and if it can be done with what set up it can be done, as to the size, accessories used to balance the camera, as it will most likely also need an additional bottom base camera plate different the the one that comes with the Ronin.

And while this to be clear is definitely NOT a priority as I intend to use nothing else but DragonM8 for fall projects, and the use of such heavy load about 30LB+ including the Ronin will surely not be something many will want to use, but because there is always the option of an Easyrig or the likes and possibly your Serene, then this would make even such weight and size very possible to manage, and for this if possible, I will test it.

And give a definitive answer to the community... If I do get around to do this.

I agree that it is safe to state that the ARRI Alexa M is not an appropriate camera for gimbal work.
Actually, there are quite a few cameras that are not suitable. Doesn't mean that the manufacturers concept is wrong.

To eliminate "confusion", there are credible arguments as to why the addition of the M variant to the Alexa line is a very sensible move by ARRI.

The basic design separates the image capture sensor functions from the recording functions. A fiber optic cable serves to connect the two. A hybrid cable will also remotely power the head.

This brings a capability to the filmmaker that does not exist with any RED camera (to date). We do not yet have the ability to remotely record data at the resolution the camera is capable of capturing.

Let's say that you want a POV shot in a location that is inaccessible for a longer period of time than can be fit on a 512 card...
On a SuperTechno crane during a concert.
Mounted to the exterior off an aircraft during flight.
In the midst of a sporting event.
Or on the top of a mast on a boat.
Tethered underwater or in an otherwise hostile environment.

In each of these cases - and likely a hundred more, being able to separate the head from the recorder is an asset to the cinematographer. Does not mean you can't figure a workaround, just that the M makes it easier.

Not trying to derail the thread - as the topic is supposed to be about you posting footage of the Ronin in use. About that, looking forward to seeing results of actual tests posted very soon!

This is what makes a Canon c500 very valuable at the moment. Using Convergent Design Odyessy 7q as your outboard 4k/2k etc monitor/recorder with only an SDI connection you can have a very small lightweight head unit (with a very long lasting internal battery or using the gimbal battery) mounted on the gimbal itself or the head in other remote places as suggested above.

Sorry all Canon haters, right tool for the job.

I completely agree with you Brian, and my previous statement about the Arri M was not a fairly assessed one... ;)

Footage, BTS videos and pics and final review coming soon...

This week?

The Canon series of C cameras sure have their place in the market place, but are not as perfect for Gimbal work as you might think been that they are top heavy, but yeah, very workable...

This week?

Waiting on couple of pieces of Gear form abroad... So this week might be too optimistic for the Final review... But we'll continue to do small test shoots with various set ups and post as I finish...

As for the final review it might be a little longer, as I wanted to make sure that I have shot in as many possible scenarios as possible...

Currently setting up a Helicopter ride, and Horse ride, and some machinery set ups... Only after I get them all done I'll post my final review... :)

Yes Willis let me know that something exciting news for the Ronin will be release today, but i don't know :o)))

Anyway, I ordered mine yesterday :D

Hey Ketch,
thanks for your efforts. Looking forward to the outcome.
Since you have a good contact to DJI, do you know anything about possible lightweight upgrades and their compatibility to the recent motors. Would be so great. I would get a ronin just now and then make lighter in the future.
Regards.

Youre such a tease!

Guilty as charge Joel... :)

thanks Holger... As I said, I am taking my time because the Ronin deserves it... And working on it hard...

I say with confidence that you should buy the Ronin NOW... And upgrade any parts as they become available, either to make it stronger, lighter, better in any way possible... DJI is a very STRONG company and one that has taken the Gimbal challenge very seriously and entered the market HEAD ON... Don't be surpass of what is coming... Just be very HAPPY... :)
